Sagamu Cult Clash: LG imposes dusk-to-dawn curfew on motorcycle, tricycle operations (Punch)

Following a series of violent cult clashes that have left some persons dead while others were injured in the Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State, the authorities of the LG have declared a dusk to dawn curfew on commercial motorcycles and tricycles, citing their alleged role in facilitating the escape of the perpetrators involved in the killings.

This was made known in a statement made available to the public by the LG Chairman, on Monday and confirmed to our correspondent by the LG Chairman, Jubril Odulate.

According to the statement, it was observed that the perpetrators of the killings escaped using motorcycle and tricycle after the heinous act. Read more 

Oshodi-Apapa Expressway: How Police, Oduduwa boys, others worsen gridlock (Vanguard)

One week after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive to the Lagos State Special Committee on Apapa Traffic to clear the trucks on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway within 24 hours, the Police and Oduduwa boys have been fingered for the perennial gridlock, which took a turn for the worst, yesterday.

Motorists were held up in traffic for over six hours, yesterday, as the gridlock stretched toAlaba Express bus stop from Berger Suya bus stop. A few motorists had to drive on the kerbs with the attendant damage to their vehicles to beat the traffic while those who could not, gnashed their teeth in the gridlock.

NDLEA rescues 5 pregnant teenagers from Imo baby factory (Sun)

Five pregnant teenage girls have been  rescued by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Imo State from a building in Naze allegedly used as a baby factory.

According to a statement by the spokesperson of the anti-narcotics agency, Mr. Femi Babafemi on Sunday, the pregnant girls were rescued by the patrol team of NDLEA along Aba/Owerri road while they were being moved from their location in Naze to Ikenegbu also in Owerri.

In light of the economic pains caused by the removal of fuel subsidies, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed frustration over a seeming lack of effort on the part of the Federal Government to meet its demands.

Hours after Monday’s deadlocked meeting with government officials to avert an indefinite strike, NLC President Joe Ajaero spoke out over the government’s refusal to budge on several issues, in an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Among its demands are to address the consequences of petrol price hikes, review the minimum wage, provide a workable roadmap to the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) alternative, fix the country’s refineries, and pay lecturers’ salary arrears. Read more 

3 nabbed for murder of Sen Adeola’s aide in Lagos (Leadership)

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested three notorious suspects over the murder of Mr. Adeniyi Sanni, an aide of a member of the National Assembly representing Ogun West, Senator Solomon Adeola, who was killed on August 5, 2023, in Lagos.

The suspects identified as Fred Azeez Okunnu 43; Lucky Idudu Michael ‘ 33 and Adedigba Segun  26 were paraded on Monday at the Lagos State police command following a weeks-long painstaking, diligent, and discreet intelligence and investigative sets of actions.

The police said items recovered from the suspects include one Brownie pistol with three rounds of live ammunition, one Beretta pistol with three rounds of live ammunition, one locally made cut-to-size pistol with six live cartridges, six expended cartridges, military gear (military camouflage vest, military jungle hat, military holster, jungle boots), and one Red Honda CRV with reg no EKY 276 JD, also hijacked from a yet to be an identified victim. 59-year-old man gets life imprisonment for raping 2 daughters (Punch)

The Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sitting in Ikeja on Monday sentenced a 59-year-old artisan, Eze Chukwuma, who defiled his two daughters for nine years to double life imprisonment.

Justice Abiola Soladoye who handed down the verdict held that the prosecution sufficiently proved the two counts bordering on defilement against Chukwuma.

The judge stated that the testimonies of prosecution witnesses were corroborated with that of the victims. Read more 

Lagos speaker urges Sickle Cell foundations on partnership (Nation)

Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, has called on Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) foundations operating in the state to partner the assembly towards accelerating awareness of the health disorder. 

He spoke at a sickle cell summit held at the Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, organised by TonyMay Foundation (TMF).

TMF, a non-profit organisation, provides care, awareness and advocacy for people living with Sickle Cell Disorder in Nigeria. Read more

Obasanjo disowns ‘‘wife’’ who begged for forgiveness over disparaging conduct against Oyo Obas (Independent)

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has disowned one Ms Taiwo Martins who claimed to be the wife of the former President in a statement apologising for the widely condemned conduct of the former President against Oyo Obas last week.

According to a statement signed by the media aide to the former President, Kehinde Akinyemi, Ms Martis has two children for Chief Obasanjo, adding that she’s not a wife nor a member of Obasanjo’s family.

The former President maintained that the posture of Martins is that of an impostor, adding further that her state he health is known to all and sundry and that whatever she says doesn’t represent Obasanjo or the family. Read more 

Fuel Subsidy: FG’s meeting with NLC ends in deadlock (DailyTrust)

The meeting between the federal government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) ended in deadlock, on Monday.

The meeting which was convened by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, failed to address any of the issues raised by Congress as reasons for the proposed strike.

Briefing the journalists after the meeting, Lalong expressed optimism that though it could not immediately address the issues raised by the Nigerian workers, most of their concerns will be resolved before the deadline. Read more

At a family member’s funeral, a man named Rick Hubbard approached the family of Franklin’s childhood friend and stated that he dated the producer’s biological mother, Debra, as a teenager. Landmark skyscraper in Khartoum engulfed in flames (Guardian) 

Buildings have caught fire in Sudan’s capital after heavy fighting between the army and rival forces.

Videos posted online at the weekend showed the iconic Greater Nile Petroleum Oil Company Tower engulfed in flames.

“This is truly painful,” an architect of the building, Tagreed Abdin, said.

Air strikes and ground battles have continued in Khartoum and other towns and cities since fighting broke out in April.

Over one million people have been forced to flee the country, the UN has said. Read more

The Good Burger sequel is coming to Paramount+ in November.

Paramount+ shared a poster and premiere date, Nov. 22, for the upcoming film Monday.

“Good Burger 2” is a sequel to the 1997 movie Good Burger, which was based on a comedy sketch featured on the Nickelodeon series All That. Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell reprise their roles as Dexter Reed and Ed, workers at the fictional fast food restaurant Good Burger. Read more 

Katy Perry sells catalog rights to Litmus Music for $225m (Variety)

After months of rumors, Katy Perry has sold her music rights to Litmus Music, the Carlyle-backed company co-founded by former Capitol Records president Dan McCarroll, for $225 million, the company announced Monday. The deal includes Perry’s stakes in master recordings and publishing rights for the five albums she released between 2008 and 2020: “One of the Boys,” “Teenage Dream”, “Prism,” “Witness” and “Smile.” Universal Music Group continues to own the masters to those albums.

After years as a major superstar during the 2010s, Perry has slowed her career, focusing on residencies in Las Vegas, philanthropy work and raising a family with her partner, actor Orlando Bloom.

Litmus launched in the summer of 2022 and made its first major acquisition the following December, buying Keith Urban’s rights to his master recordings. Read more

India may be linked to Canadian Sikh leader’s death — Trudeau (BBC)

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the Indian government could be behind the fatal shooting of Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Mr Nijjar was shot dead outside a Sikh temple on 18 June in British Columbia (BC).

Mr Trudeau said Canadian intelligence has identified a “credible” link between his death and the Indian state.

He raised the issue with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the recent G20 summit, he said. Read more 

Hunter Biden sues US tax agency over disclosures of personal information (AlJazeera)

US President Joe Biden’s son Hunter has sued the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), accusing two agents of wrongly sharing his personal tax information.

The lawsuit on Monday says the agents of the United States tax agency “targeted and sought to embarrass Mr Biden”.

Hunter also says federal whistleblower protections sought by the agents do not include the sharing of confidential information in press interviews and testimony before Congress. Read more

Kayode Yahaya, coach of the world silver medallist, Nigeria’s Ese Brume, has revealed that the athlete narrowly missed the opportunity of winning the long jump event at the Diamond League final at Oregon, on Sunday night, due to a ‘sudden’ injury.

Brume, who grabbed her World Silver medal at the same venue during the 2021 edition of the World Championships, had established a Season jump of 6.85m in her fifth attempt on Sunday night and was looking forward to winning the title.

But reigning World indoor and outdoor champion, Ivana Vuleta of Serbia, made a sudden jump of 6.85m to equal Brume’s jump, and in the process, denied her for the second time the chance of winning a global event. Read more

Ex-international Sam Sodje has backed Super Eagles players, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi, to get new clubs in the top leagues soon after the Leicester City stars failed to secure transfers away from the Championship side at the last summer window.

Iheanacho and Ndidi were linked with several clubs at the recently closed window following the relegation of Leicester City to the Championship but their fans were left disappointed that no top-flight clubs were able to sign up the two players.

Iheanacho was particularly courted by Crystal Palace and Everton but none of the two clubs were able to pull a deal through. Ndidi suffered a similar fate as he was very close to joining Nottingham Forest and will now be disappointed the deal couldn’t see the light of day. Read more

Guardiola wants his City players to feel the pressure of being European champions while also focussing solely on qualifying from Group G when the new campaign gets underway against Crvena Zvezda this week.

Novak Djokovic skips tournament as Serb confirms plan to take a break from tennis (Express)

Novak Djokovic has confirmed he will miss next month’s Shanghai Masters as he takes a break from tennis. The 36-year-old won his 24th Grand Slam title earlier this month as he lifted the US Open trophy and then helped Serbia reach the Davis Cup Final 8.

Djokovic has been in fine form once again this year and would have landed a Calendar Grand Slam had he not lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final in July. The veteran won the Australian Open and the French Open to put himself in the frame to achieve the spectacular feat.

Toto Wolff to miss Japanese GP for surgery as Lewis Hamilton’s new Mercedes boss named (Mirror)

Toto Wolff will miss the Japanese Grand Prix to undergo surgery on his cruciate ligament.

After overseeing a podium finish in Singapore, the Mercedes team principal will not make the trip to Suzuka. Instead, he will be going under the knife to fix a problem with his knee.

It comes after Wolff broke his arm while on holiday with his family during the summer break. He was mountain biking when he suffered a fall, which he blamed on his left leg “because I no longer have a cruciate ligament there”. Read more
