Lagos sales rep remanded for raping mentally challenged lady (Punch)

A Yaba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, has remanded a 22-year-old sales representative, David Okon, over the alleged rape of a mentally-challenged woman, Folake, in the Lekki area of the state.

Our correspondent gathered that Folake, who was reported to be a virgin at the time of the incident, came from Abeokuta, Ogun State, to visit her aunt in Lagos because of her illness.

She, however, started following the woman to her workplace.

Okon, who was a co-worker of the aunt, was said to have started making amorous advances at her from the day she started visiting the shop, but she turned him down. Read more

Islamic teacher bags life jail for defiling 8 pupils (Punch)

Justice Abiola Soladoye of an Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court, Lagos State, on Tuesday, sentenced an Islamic teacher, Adam Farouk, to life imprisonment for defiling eight pupils in his class.

Farouk defiled the pupils, who were between the ages of six and 11, between November 2018 to February 2019 on Balogun Street, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The convict was arraigned on eight counts of sexual assault preferred against him by the Lagos State Government.

While delivering judgment, Justice Soladoye stated that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt the ingredients of the eight counts bordering on sexual assault by penetration. Read more

Tipper driver drowns stealing diesel from tanker (Punch)

The swollen body of a 39-year-old man, Jemilah Abdullahi, has been recovered from a diesel tanker compartment where he suffocated while allegedly attempting to steal diesel.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident happened on Monday in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that Abdullahi worked as a driver with Kinlon Company, Ikorodu, and fell inside the company’s diesel tank while scooping fuel into a container.

Rape suspect discharged after 8 years remand (Punch)

Justice Ramon Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, Lagos State, on Monday, discharged a defendant, Muyideen Bilau, of rape charges for want of diligent prosecution.

Bilau was in prison custody for eight years and nine months.

The defendant, who was arrested on April 5, 2014, was remanded on April 14, 2014, and was never tried because the prosecution failed to present a witness.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Monday, the prosecuting counsel, Bukola Okeowo, announced her appearance, while the defence counsel, Yusuf Nurudeen, also announced his appearance. Read more

Ex-poly student jailed for faking American lawyer (Punch)

An Ikeja Special Offences Court, Lagos State, on Monday, sentenced a former student of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Francis Nduka, to two-year imprisonment for pretending to be an American lawyer.

Nduka, an Internet fraudster, defrauded his victims of $3,700.

Justice Ramon Oshodi handed down the verdict after the convict, who said he had been into romance scam since 2020, pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Nduka was also accused of procuring a register of eminent lawyers printed from his Gmail account. Read more

Sales rep arraigned for theft of N55m furniture (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a sales representative, Dennis Oputu, before the Yaba Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing furniture valued at N55m.

Our correspondent gathered that Oputu was employed by the owner of Joja Ventures, Janefrances Azolo, as a sales representative in 2019.

The defendant was alleged to have been stealing and selling pieces of furniture without remitting the money to his employer.

The 38-year-old was arraigned before Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun on two counts of stealing. Read more

Overzealous Lagos cops: Detained pastor demands justice (Punch)

A pastor based in Warewa, Ogun State, Adekunle Kristisanwo, who was detained by policemen from the Isheri Police Station, Lagos State, has demanded justice.

Kristisanwo, who also operates a commercial motorcycle, called for the arrest and prosecution of one Inspector Patrick Stephen and one Inspector Mercy, who allegedly collected N20,000 for bail from him.

PUNCH Metro had reported that the cleric was on his motorcycle at New Garage, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Monday, December 5, 2022, when Inspector Stephen arrested him for violating the ban on Okada operation in Lagos State.

The 50-year-old said he was thereafter detained and forced to sleep in a cell till the following day when he was released after paying N20,000 for bail to Inspector Mercy, who was the Investigating Police Officer. Read more

Suspected Lagos cultist remanded for killing shoemaker (Punch)

A Yaba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, has remanded a suspected cultist, Usman Badmus, for allegedly killing a shoemaker, Adesanya Mayowa, in the Gbagada area of the state.

The 28-year-old orphan was arraigned before Magistrate P. E. Nwaka on three counts of unlawful association and murder.

The police prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that Badmus committed the crime along with his cult members around 8pm on September 15, 2020, in the Sholuyi area of Gbagada.

He said the defendant went into hiding in Ajah for over two years and was later seen by people who reported the matter to the police. Read more

35-year-old man in court for defiling daughter, 13 (Punch)

A 35-year-old father, Temitayo Bamiro, has been arraigned before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for allegedly defiling his 13-year-old daughter.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Bamiro pleaded not guilty to the one count preferred against him.

The prosecutor, Dr Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on January 7,  at the Iba New Site, Ojo, Lagos.

He said Bamiro was in the habit of sexually assaulting his daughter and had forcefully penetrated her anus repeatedly in the past. Read more

MRA headquarters burgled in Lagos (Guardian)

The Media Rights Agenda (MRA), headquarters in Lagos, was at the weekend burgled by yet-to-be identified intruders, who carted away office equipment such as window systems, laptops and other valuables worth millions of naira.

In a statement by the Head of MRA’s Legal Department, Obioma Okonkwo, yesterday, she described the incident as a shocking and frightening attack on the organisation.

She said the organisation was still trying to determine whether the action was simply a robbery incident or a more sinister effort to cripple MRA’s operations or access its records and information since only laptop computers and other digital tools were taken away.

Okonkwo said: “The incident took place sometime between the evening of Saturday, January 21 and the following morning”, adding that “the intruders apparently gained access into the office, which is a detached two-storey building surrounded by a high perimeter brick fence, by climbing over a side fence into the compound, then cutting through the ceiling and smashing roofing material to enter one of the offices on the upper floor.” Read more

Police arrest 405 robbery suspects, kill 51 in 2 years in Lagos (Guardian)

The Police Command in Lagos State says no fewer than 405 robbery suspects were arrested and 51 others killed during an exchange of gunfire between 2021 and 2022.

The command’s spokesman, SP. Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the figures to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) while speaking on the achievements of the command.

Hundeyin said 245 suspects were arrested, 25 killed from 17 robbery incidents in 2021, while 160 were arrested and 26 killed from 20 incidents in 2022.

He said that 350 robbery operations were foiled within the period under review, with 169 in 2021 and 181 in 2022. Read more

Witness narrates how Nollywood actor stabbed neighbour (Guardian)

A Prosecution witness, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Kazeem Oladimeji has narrated to a Lagos Special Offences Court how a Nollywood actor, Temitayo Ogunbusola, stabbed his neighbour, Oladotun Osho, to death with a knife.

Ogunbusola was said to have stabbed his neighbour during an argument over payment of N1, 000 electricity bill.

Oladimeji in his evidence before Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe in an ongoing murder trial of 30-year-old Nollywood actor (Ogunbusola), told the court he investigated the case along with his team members.

ASP Oladimeji from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Lagos, told the court that on May 18, 2022, the case file was transferred along with the defendant (Ogunbusola) in a murder case. Read more

Court sentences nursing mother to 6 years imprisonment for drug trafficking (Guardian)

Justice Tijjani Ringim of a Federal High Court, Lagos has convicted and sentenced a nursing mother, Adeoye Oluwakemi Fatimoh, to six years imprisonment, for trafficking in banned substances.

The judge sentenced her after she pleaded guilty to two counts charge of unlawful export of 1.10 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa popularly called marijuana and 17 grams of Rohypnol, a psychotropic substance, filed against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

NDLEA counsel, Mr. Abu Ibrahim, while arraigning the convict, told the court that she was arrested with the prohibited drug on November 18, 2022, which she wanted to export to Oman, at the Gate ‘C’ of the Departure Hall of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja-Lagos, during the outward clearance of passengers on Ethiopian Airline flight.

The prosecution counsel told the court that her offences contravened section 11(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. Read more
