Sales representative docked for allegedly stealing N984,258

A Sales Representative, John Okenyi, was on Thursday docked before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing goods worth N984,258 from his employer.

The police charged Okenyi, 39, with theft and willful damage.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Donjour Perezi told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offence on Aug. 30 at Taiwo Street, Ojota, Lagos.

Perezi alleged that the defendant, a sales representative for Renuzi Ventures Limited, was instructed to deliver goods to some customers with a vehicle marked: EKY 596 YE.

“He was told to remit the money collected for the goods back to the company’s coffers after the supply, but he fraudulently converted the money into his personal use and escaped.

“When he was caught, the defendant (allegedly) claimed that he had an accident with the vehicle given to him whereas he never reported the accident to the police.

“When the matter was investigated, it was found that Okenyi willfully damaged the windscreen and bumper of the vehicle, whose value is yet unknown, to cover up his tracks,” the prosecutor said.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 287(7) and 350 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 provides seven years imprisonment for stealing.

Magistrate M.O. Tanimola admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

Tanimola adjourned the case until Nov. 16 for trial. (NAN)
