Things have turned sour for sweet-toothed children. Earlier this month, a sugar tax was launched,  which will add 14p to the price of 500ml bottles of ­super-saccharine drinks. But might our obsession with sugar be blinding us to a bigger danger lurking in our children’s diets?

“Salt is far more damaging. It is directly toxic, unlike sugar,” says Graham MacGregor, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine and honorary consultant at Barts & The London. “You can eat sugar and then burn it off ­without it doing you any harm.
