Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, took oath of office to begin second term in office, assuring Lagosians that he will do his best to remain worthy of the mandate of the people of the state.

The governor, who arrived at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Onikan venue of the inauguration ceremony at exactly 10:13am, was sworn-in with his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.

Amid pomp and pageantry, the governor took his oath of office administered by the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Kazeem Alogba, at exactly 11: 41am, while the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, earlier took his oath of office at 11:32am. Read more 

Emir of Daura receives Buhari, wife in Katsina (Vanguard)

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived in his home town of Duara, Katsina State on Monday after handing over to his successor, President Bola Tinubu.

The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk and other traditional rulers in the state received Buhari and his wife amid a cheering crowd.

Vanguard earlier reported that Buhari in the company of his wife, Aisha departed Abuja after the inauguration of Tinubu as the President. Read more 

Queues resurface as Tinubu announces fuel subsidy removal (DailyTrust)

Petrol stations in Lagos started witnessing queues few hours after President Bola Tinubu announced that “fuel subsidy is gone”.

Daily Trust observed that NNPC stations in Ikeja, Alausa were crowded by motorists who rushed to buy the product.

Many private stations were not selling as of the time of filing this report.

In his inauguration speech, Tinubu had said subsidy was benefitting the rich at the expense of poor. Read more

Firm unveils composite cooking gas cylinder to deepen gas utilisation (Sun)

As part of the efforts to deepen the usage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), a cooking gas marketer, Second Coming Nigeria Limited, has introduced 20-kilogramme composite LPG cylinders into the domestic market to deepen gas utilisation in every household.

The firm’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Basil Ogbuanu, at the launch in Lagos recently, said this would make it easier for families to enjoy the durability of usage than refilling frequently.

According to him, the cylinders are part of the company’s efforts to deepen the usage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas in Nigeria. Read more

President Bola Tinubu, has promised to revisit the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Tinubu, who said this in his inaugural speech in Abuja on Monday, however, said that his administration would treat both the old and the new naira notes as legal tender. 

He said that the policy was harshly applied by CBN, given the number of unbanked Nigerians. Read more

Legendary director Martin Scorsese has announced a new film about Jesus after a meeting with Pope Francis in the Vatican.

Following the Cannes Film Festival, Scorsese ventured across Italy, which included a visit to the Vatican to see Pope Francis. While he was there, Scorsese spoke at a Rome conference, and informed the crowd about his next project: “I have responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus.

Hamilton police say engaged couple shot dead while fleeing landlord-tenant dispute (SeawayNews)

A brazen double homicide in which an engaged couple was allegedly gunned down by their landlord as they fled their rental home has shaken residents of their southern Ontario city and raised questions about how a landlord-tenant dispute could explode into such violence, Hamilton police said Sunday.

Sgt. Steve Bereziuk said a 27-year-old female educational assistant and a 28-year-old male electrician were shot dead just outside the home they shared in the community of Stoney Creek on Saturday, describing them both as “truly innocent victims.”

Bereziuk said the 57-year-old suspect is a landlord who lived in a unit above the tenants and died hours after police negotiators tried to resolve the situation peacefully while area residents sheltered in place on police instructions. Read more

On the solemnity of Pentecost, Pope Francis urged Catholics to invoke the Holy Spirit daily to bring harmony to a divided world, a polarized Church, and to broken hearts.

Speaking in St. Peter’s Basilica, the pope explained that the role of the Holy Spirit, both at the beginning of the creation of the world and at all times, is to make “created realities pass from disorder to order” and “from confusion to harmony.”

Keanu Reeves reunited with his band Dogstar for their first performance in more than 20 years over the weekend.

The indie-rock trio performed at the BottleRock Napa Valley festival on Saturday, marking its first live set in 23 years.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Reeves and his bandmates Robert Mailhouse and Bret Domrose played a mix of songs from their earlier albums, 1996’s Our Little Visionary and 2000’s Happy Ending, as well as new songs from their forthcoming record. Read more

Russia issues arrest warrant for Sen. Lindsey Graham (CBS)

Russia’s Interior Ministry on Monday issued an arrest warrant for U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham following his comments related to the fighting in Ukraine.

In an edited video of his meeting on Friday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that was released by Zelenskyy’s office, Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, noted that “the Russians are dying” and described the U.S. military assistance to the country as “the best money we’ve ever spent.”

After five matchdays of the 2023 Nigeria Beach Soccer League (NBSL), 2021 Champions, Kebbi BSC has stayed on the table unbeaten by any of the participant teams.

Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur owned up to his team’s miscue in qualifying in Monaco that cost Charles Leclerc a three-place grid drop for Sunday’s race.

In Saturday’s qualifying shootout, Leclerc had just finished his final Q3 lap and was going through Monaco’s tunnel when McLaren’s Lando Norris stumbled upon the slow-moving Ferrari.

Varner outlasts Grace, posts 1st victory in LIV Golf event  (ESPN)

Harold Varner III won his first LIV Golf event Sunday when he two-putted from about 35 feet for birdie on the par-5 18th hole at Trump National in LIV Golf-DC.

Varner won by 1 shot over Branden Grace of South Africa, who moments earlier holed an approximately 20-foot birdie putt on the tough par-4 second hole, his last of the shotgun start. Grace closed with a 66.
