A major emergency in the educational set up that will bring about an overhaul of the entire educational system in Lagos state has been declared by the state governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The governor said it is being done at different levels. “We are fixing the infrastructure, we are also fixing the curriculum, we are fixing training, we are fixing development of the teachers, we are also fixing recruitment of teachers.

SCIID takes over Lagos torture centre case (Punch)

The Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Police Command, Bala Elkana, has said that the case of the 15 victims rescued from the Blessings of Goodness Healing Church has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba.

The church was allegedly being used as a detention centre for mentally ill persons and those suffering from various ailments and social vices.

PUNCH Metro had reported that no fewer than 15 persons, who were chained inside a building on the church premises, were rescued by men of the command, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Isheri-Osun Division, CSP Chike Ibe, when the police stormed the church on Wednesday following a tip-off by the National President of the Eagle Crime Awareness and Prevention Initiative, a non-governmental organisation, Samuel Adam. Adeboye to Hold Holy Ghost Service in Abuja (ThisDay)

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, will hold holy ghost service next week in Abuja, the church has announced.

‘Delta, Rivers, three others at risk of severe flooding’ (Punch)

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency has advised five states to be on red alert against flooding.

Mr Clement Onyeaso, the Director-General of NIHSA gave the advice while briefing the newsmen on Monday in Abuja.

Onyeaso said the affected States to be on red alert are Edo, Delta, Anambra, Rivers and Bayelsa,

He said the river flooding that occurred in Adamawa, Taraba, Benue and Kogi would still find its way through these states before emptying into the ocean. Read more

Police discover detention camp in Ibadan (Nation)

Oyo State police command has discovered a torture centre in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital on Monday.

The Commissioner of Police Shina Olukolu is currently supervising the release of the detainees at Oloore Mosque around Ojoo axis of the state with the owner currently in police custody alongside his accomplices.

Although the numbers of detainees are yet to be ascertained as at the time of sending this report, headcount of the inmates at the detention facility is currently been done by men of the state police Command, with speculation put at hundreds. Read more

Buhari Signs Deep Offshore Law in London (ThisDay)

President Muhammadu Buhari Monday in London signed the amended Deep Offshore bill into law.

A statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said the president after signing the bill, described today “as an important day for all Nigerians – but particularly the young generation.”

Seven killed in Nasarawa boat accident (Nation)

About seven persons were said to have lost their lives in a boat accident on Friday evening in Gwayaka river in the Lafia East Development Area of Lafia Local government in Nasarawa State.

PUNCH reports that the incident is coming barely a year after four died in a boat mishap in the Ashangwa area of Lafia East Development Area of the state.

An eyewitness, who was at the scene of the incident informed our correspondent that the victims, who are mostly irrigation farmers from Kano, were returning from their farms that evening when the unfortunate took place. Read more

Over 40 migrants found alive in refrigerated truck – Greek police (Punch)

Forty-one migrants were found alive in a refrigerated truck in northern Greece on Monday, said police, who arrested the driver.

The migrants, of apparent Afghan origin, were mostly in good condition. Seven of them were given first aid in hospital, the police said.

“The truck contained men and boys. Identifying their nationality will require a couple of days,” a police source told AFP. Read more

Woman found dead in landslide after storm batters France (Guardian)

A 71-year-old woman was found dead Monday after being engulfed by a landslide in the French city of Nice, as the south of the country counted the cost from a brutal storm.

Storm Amelie brought freak winds, downpours and monster waves to southern France over the weekend. The woman, 71, who died in her own back yard, was the only reported fatality.

The storm dropped trees on roads and railway tracks and ripped loose live electrical wires, leaving tens of thousands of people without power for hours on end, authorities said. Read more

Apple offers $2.5 bn to address California housing crisis (Punch)

Apple said Monday it would commit $2.5 billion over the next two years to help address the shortage of affordable housing in California and reduce homelessness.
