Sanwo-Olu increases youth representation on judicial panel to two (Guardian)

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, increased the youth representative on the Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution set up to investigate cases of brutality and human rights violations committed by operatives of the dissolved Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the state from one to two.

Sanwo-Olu revealed this when Justice Doris Okuwobi (rtd), chairman of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution set up to investigate cases of brutality and human rights violations visited the governor.

Okuwobi’s visit to the governor came ahead of the swearing-in of the panel members in Alausa on Monday and their inaugural sitting at LASWA Building on Falomo Road in Ikoyi.

The meeting, held behind closed doors, was attended by the Attorney General of the State, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, and Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso. Read more

Irked by the unprofessional conduct of the operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, already dissolved by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, Nigerian youths have consistently protested for ten days, seeking for an end to Police brutality against Nigerians.

The protest has been brought down to Apo junction, a road linking Festac, Mile 2, and Ago together. Protesters were seen using tyres, broken sticks and their cars to block the road.

Singing and dancing as DJ plays different Nigerian songs, protesters took charge of the road, preventing motorists from accessing it and directing ‘Okada’ motorcyclists where to follow. Read more

Femi Otedola offers to save another life (Thisday)

Fortune favours whomever it favours and is kind to whomever it is kind to. Not long ago, news of a dying Nigerian academic was the buzz on papers and blogs. The reports revealed that the said academic, a former lecturer, was in urgent need of medical care—a predicament that was reportedly not unrelated to the injustice enacted by his superiors. But all things have an end, and thanks to the kindness and compassion of Femi Otedola, the shadow of death over Inih Ebong has been thrown off.

The hearts of several Nigerians were stirred when the case of Inih Ebong, an associate professor that was fired working as a lecturer at the University of Uyo, Department of Theatre Arts hit the newsstands. Because he had reportedly spoken up against the criminal practices of his university’s management, he was unjustly laid off. Even after different courts have instructed the university to reinstate and compensate him, Ebong has remained unemployed. Consequently, he fell gravely sick. Read more

Police kick as mob lynches three suspected kidnappers (Punch)

The Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Abdulkadir Jimoh, has condemned mob lynching of three suspected kidnappers in the Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state.

The mob allegedly set ablaze the suspects on Saturday with a motorcycle conveying them.

It was learnt that their heads were decapitated before they were set ablaze by the roadside. The incident attracted a huge crowd who watched as the suspects were burnt to death

The Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, in a statement titled, ‘Jungle justice and its implications,’ condemned the incident.

It read in part, “The attention of the Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, Abdulkadir Jimoh, has been drawn to the incessant mob action meted out to criminal elements across the state. Read more

Catholic priest, pupils drown in Bayelsa flood (Guardian)

Following the flooding of the most part of the state, a Catholic priest, Fr. Francis Ighorurhie, aged 38, reportedly drowned on Thursday night at Kaiama Community in Kolokuma-Opokuma Council of Bayelsa State.

Two Primary school pupils also drowned along Goodnews street in Azikoro Town in Yenagoa Council of the state.

It was gathered on Friday that Fr. Francis Ighorurhie, a Missionary of St. Paul (MSP) from Delta State, was until his death the Parish Priest of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Kaiama.

A priest, who spoke anonymously, said, “this is a sad moment for us. Father was on his way back from Bomadi in Delta State when he met his untimely death. But for the flood, he could have driven his car straight to his residence instead of parking same by the road.” Read more

Senate President sponsors wedding of 100 couples in Yobe (Vanguard)

Senate President, Dr Ahmed Lawan on Saturday sponsored the wedding of 100 orphans and less-privileged couples of his constituents, in the Karasuwa and Nguru Local Government Areas of Yobe state.

Lawan, at the occasion in Nguru, said he would also support the beneficiaries with appropriate entrepreneurial skills to enable them to sustain their marriage.

“We are here to sponsor the wedding of 50 young couples from Nguru, and 50 others from Karasuwa local government areas,’’ He said.

Lawan who was represented by Ahmed Mirwa, the Speaker, Yobe State House of Assembly, also said the gesture was meant to assist underprivileged intending youths who were due for marriage; but could hardly afford it. Read more

They also allege that apart from their patients, relations of the people they treat, as well as their superior male officers and employers also press them for sex.

The United Nations describes sexual harassment as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favours, attempted rape or sexual assault, deliberate touching, sexual looks, catcalls, turning work discussions to sexual innuendos and touching or rubbing oneself sexually around another person. Gang rape: Varsity suspends three male students (Guardian)

The Management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rivers State has suspended three male students who gang-raped a female year-one student.

The affected students include Nnamdi Destiny of Department of Political Science; Ovunwo Henry of Sociology Department and Samuel Valentine, a 300 level student of Political Science.

The first two suspects were arrested and handed over to the Police, while the third accused is still at large.

Meanwhile, the university management has banned opposite sex visit by students of the institution. The female student was said to have visited her boyfriend in the hostel, where her male friend and two others gang-raped her. Read more

US woman faces first federal execution since 1953 (BBC)

The US is to execute a female federal inmate for the first time in almost 70 years, the Justice Department said.

Lisa Montgomery strangled a pregnant woman in Missouri before cutting out and kidnapping the baby in 2004.

She is due to be given a lethal injection in Indiana on 8 December.

The last woman to be executed by the US government was Bonnie Heady, who died in a gas chamber in Missouri in 1953, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. Read more

Iran claims victory over US as UN arms embargo expires (RT)

Iran’s foreign ministry has declared the victory of “multilateralism, peace and security”, claiming the UN’s conventional arms embargo effectively expired on October 18, despite Washington’s pressure to reimpose sanctions.

“As of today, all restrictions on the transfer of arms, related activities and financial services to and from The Islamic Republic of Iran, and all prohibitions regarding the entry or transit through territories of the United Nations Member States previously imposed on a number of Iranian citizens and military officials, are all automatically terminated,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on midnight local time, October 18. Thousands of protesters have rallied in the US capital – Washington, DC – and other cities across the country to protest against President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee and to call for his defeat in the November 3 election.

Saturday’s rallies, which organisers said were taking place in all 50 states, were inspired by the first Women’s March in Washington, DC, a huge anti-Trump rally held a day after his 2017 inauguration.

Nagorno-Karabakh: Armenia accuses Azerbaijan of violating new truce (BBC)

Armenia has accused Azerbaijan of violating a humanitarian ceasefire in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh within minutes of it coming into force.

A truce had been agreed to start at midnight local time (20:00 GMT Saturday).

But an Armenian defence ministry spokeswoman said Azerbaijan broke the ceasefire after just four minutes by firing artillery shells and rockets.

Azerbaijan is yet to respond to the allegations. Read more

Parents recall horror moments after teen terrorist beheaded teacher outside French school (RT)

Residents of the French suburb where history teacher Samuel Paty was brutally slain and beheaded on Friday have been shocked by the incident, with some even saying they are afraid to allow their children back to school.

“Our children are not safe, we don’t know what to do. We won’t allow them to school anymore,” a parent of a child attending the school where the murdered teacher worked says, in a video published by RT’s video agency Ruptly.

Another parent, whose child is studying in the same class where the teacher showed cartoons deemed offensive by some, gave his account of the school incident that is believed to have motivated the murderer. Read more

Headie One scores number one album with debut release named after his late mother (Metro) 

Drill rapper Headie One has reached number one with his debut album Edna, named after his late mother.

The 26-year-old’s record has reached the top of the UK Albums Chart, achieving 25.5 million streams in total, according to the Official Charts Company.

Edna, which features guest appearances from fellow rappers Drake, Stormzy and Skepta, is also the first British rap debut to land at number one this year. The album is dedicated to and named after Headie One’s late mother, and references his time in prison after being sentenced to six months in January for carrying a knife. Read more

Watford manager Vladimir Ivic has allayed fears over William Troost-Ekong’s injury on his debut for the Hornets, insisting that it’s not serious.
