He said mosques can hold their prayers five times daily while churches can also commence weekly services.

3-storey school building collapses in Lagos (Guardian)

A three-storey building of the Excell College, a private school in Ejigbo, Lagos, collapsed on Saturday, two days to reopening of secondary and private schools in the state.

The building is located at No. 15, Ansarudeen St., by Ile Epo Bus stop, Iyana Ejigbo.

NAN reports that public and private primary and secondary schools in Lagos State are to re-open on Monday after about six months closure due to COVID-19.

Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions re-opened on Sept. 14.

The Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, told newsmen that no person was trapped in the collapsed building. Read more

Lagos to host hybrid world tourism event (Thisday)

The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has said that the celebration of this year’s World Tourism Day celebration will be in conformity with the Covid-19 safety protocols, saying plans have been concluded to restrict physical participation by its stakeholders during the celebration.

The Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, made this known at a Technical Meeting held in preparation for the event billed for Sunday, September 27th, 2020.

At the meeting, it was agreed that tourism stakeholders who would be participating in the event would join the celebration through Zoom platform, Facebook Livestream on Lagos State Government and from four divisions of State, while a smaller number would join some high profile guests at the physical event taking place in Ikeja. Alleged sex-for-mark video: IMSU students get 7 days to prove allegation (Vanguard)

Students of Imo state University, IMSU, Saturday got a seven days ultimatum to present to the public a sex-for-grade video involving one of their lecturers, Professor Victor Njoku of Chemistry department, as failure to do so those behind the viral naked video of Njoku, would face the music.

This warning was delivered in Owerri by the state coordinator of Progressive Graduate of the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry of the university, Comrade Munonye Obinna and co-coordinator, Frank Ufomadu.

They said that based on their findings, Professor Njoku’s private residence was invaded by “character assassins” and they got a naked video of him and posted it on social media to destroy his reputation. Read more

‌Ibadan poly fires lecturer for alleged misconduct (Punch)

The authorities of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, on Saturday, announced the sack of Mr Ajadi Omothosho, a lecturer in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning for alleged misconduct.

The institution made this known in a letter titled, ‘The Polytechnic, Ibadan terminates appointment of Chief Lecturer,’ signed by the Registrar/Secretary to Council, Mrs Fawale M.T, and made available to journalists on Saturday.

It stated that the lecturer’s actions “resulted in embarrassing and tarnishing the image of The Polytechnic, Ibadan”. Read more

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun uploading the Edo governorship results from polling units on its online portal.

The INEC Result Viewing Portal (IREV) is a dedicated public portal, that enables voters to view polling unit results real-time as the voting ends on election day.

Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee had said the move was to further strengthen the transparency in the election result management system which has remained a major source of mistrust in Nigeria’s electoral process. Read more

Gunmen kill one, kidnap three in Kogi (Punch)

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the killing of one person while three others were kidnapped by yet to be identified gunmen.

The Commissioner of police Ayuba Ede who confirmed the incident said the gunmen struck on Thursday at the Royal Garden Relaxation spot, along Ayingba – Ankpa Highway, Egume community, in the Eastern flank of the state.

Ekpeji, said, “I received a report from Egume Division, that three unknown armed men attacked Royal Garden Relaxation Spot shooting sporadically. Read more

Man arrested for burying grandchild alive (Guardian)

A 50-year old man has been arrested in Bauchi for burying his day-old grandchild alive in Toro Local Government Area.

According to Bauchi police spokesman, Ahmed Wakil, the man’s 17-year-old daughter Hafsat Bawada of Rimin Zayam in Toro L.G.A of Bauchi put to bed on September 14.

She told the police that her father seized the male child and buried him at the back of his house.

“She said that her father, Bawada Audu, (50years) seized the child and buried the baby behind his house. Upon receipt of this report, the corpse was exhumed and the baby was rushed to a general hospital where it was certified dead by a medical doctor,” Wakil said. Read more

Woman falls from car on M25 filming Snapchat video (BBC)

A woman fell out of a moving car on the M25 while leaning out of the window to film a video for Snapchat.

She fell from the car into a “live lane” between junction six and the Clacket Lane Services at 01:30 BST, Surrey Police traffic officers tweeted.

The woman was not badly hurt but police said it was lucky “she wasn’t seriously injured or killed”.

She was treated at the scene by paramedics. No arrests have been made, police added. Read more

Hundreds gather outside US Supreme Court to mourn ‘RBG’ (France24)

Hundreds of people gathered Friday night outside the US Supreme Court, singing in a candlelight vigil and weeping together as they mourned the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The large group of mourners packed the high court’s steps and the street across from the US Capitol in a nighttime memorial. Dozens of people sat on the steps quietly reflecting on Ginsburg’s legacy.

Scores of memorial candles flickered in the wind along the front steps of the court as people knelt to leave bouquets of flowers, small American flags and handwritten condolence messages for Ginsburg, who died Friday of metastatic pancreatic cancer at age 87 after 27 years on the court. Edition of Shakespeare’s last play found in Scots college in Spain (BBC)

A rare edition of Shakespeare’s last play has been found in a Scottish Catholic college in Spain.

The Two Noble Kinsmen, written by Shakespeare with John Fletcher, was found by a researcher investigating the work of the Scots economist Adam Smith.

The 1634 volume could be the oldest Shakespearean work in the country.

In the 17th Century the seminary in Madrid was an important source of English literature for Spanish intellectuals.

The Two Noble Kinsmen was included in a volume made up of several English plays printed from 1630 to 1635. Read more

COVID-19 to shape this year’s UN General Assembly (VOA)

World leaders will meet virtually at the United Nations starting Monday, as they discuss international cooperation to halt the spread of COVID-19.

Confirmed cases of the virus have surpassed 30 million and reached nearly 1 million deaths globally, according to Johns Hopkins University. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said the coronavirus has exposed the world’s growing inequalities and threatens decades of development gains. He has cautioned that a vaccine will not by itself solve the crisis. 

“We need to massively expand new and existing tools that can respond to new cases and provide vital treatment to suppress transmission and save lives, especially over the next 12 months,” Guterres told reporters Wednesday. Read more

Thousands rally in Thailand in protest for democratic reforms (France24)

Thousands of protesters in Thailand’s capital demonstrated against the government of former coup leader and Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha on Saturday, with many also demanding reforms to the powerful monarchy.

“Down with feudalism, long live the people,” was one of the chants.

Protests have been building since mid-July to call for the removal of the government, a new constitution and elections. They have also broken a long-standing taboo by criticising the monarchy of King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

Police said at least 5,000 people had gathered at the campus of Thammasat University, long seen as a hotbed of opposition to the military and royalist establishment, and scene of a massacre of protesters in 1976. Read more

Putintseva, ranked 30, had reached the quarter-finals of the recent hardcourt US Open, a tournament which Halep skipped because of coronavirus concerns.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin hit a first career hat-trick and James Rodriguez scored on his home debut as Everton continued their impressive start to the Premier League season with a dominant win against 10-man West Brom.

The Baggies took an early lead through an excellent solo effort by Grady Diangana, who broke from inside his own half before hitting a dipping effort beyond Jordan Pickford for his first top-flight goal.

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed Diogo Jota’s transfer to Liverpool and wished him luck, while Ki-Jana Hoever will move to Molineux.

The Portugal international will move to Anfield in a deal worth an initial £40million – although Liverpool are only paying around 10% up front – with a further £5m in add-ons and bonuses. Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has said he “never had a problem” with Gareth Bale, with the Wales forward set to rejoin Tottenham on loan.

Bale, 31, who joined Real for a then world record £85m in 2013, arrived at Spurs’ training ground on Friday.

A run of injuries, indifferent form and a reported falling-out with Zidane saw the Welshman become a marginal figure at the Spanish club.

Zidane said he did not speak to Bale before he left for London.

Bale’s signing has not been announced by Spurs yet and on Saturday Zidane said it was “not a done deal”. Read more

New Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman has told Riqui Puig he will not be part of his plans at Camp Nou and should seek a transfer away from the club, according to reports.

The Dutch coach replaced Quique Setien at the end of last month and was expected to usher in a new era, getting rid of Barca’s older stalwarts and bringing in new blood from the academy.
