Sanwo-Olu signs anti-open grazing, sexual violence bills into law (Guardian)

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, signed the bill prohibiting open cattle grazing and trespass of cattle on land. He also signed domestic and sexual violence into laws.

The anti-open grazing law is coming more than two weeks after the September 1, 2021 deadline set by the southern governors’ forum for states to enact the law.

Sanwo-Olu, who assented to the bill during the state’s Executive Council meeting in Alausa, directed security agencies to swing immediately into action and enforce provisions of the law.

Meanwhile, the state government has said it is committed to tackling the menace of drug abuse frontally to reduce its ravaging effect among youths in the state. Read more

INEC suspends voters’ online pre-registration in Lagos (Punch)

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it will suspend the pre-registration of voters in Lagos from Tuesday (today).

The Head of Department, Voter Education/Publicity, INEC, Lagos State, Mr Femi Akinbiyi, in a statement on Monday said the commission would display voter register for claims and objections from September 24.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission, Lagos State will as from September 21, 2021, suspend the online pre-registration of voters that started on June 28, 2021, and in-person registration that commenced on July 26, 2021, and thereafter embark on the display of voter register for claims and objections.

“The exercise based on the approved timelines and schedule will start on September 24 and end on September 30, 2021. The temporary CVR stoppage is to give room for all registrants to check for appropriateness or otherwise of their information supplied during the registration. Read more

Tincan port gets two new cargo scanners to fight against illicit imports (Guardian)

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tincan Island Port, yesterday, took delivery of two Nuctech mobile scanners with accessories to boost examination and clearing of cargoes at the port.

The Customs Area Controller, Musa Abdullahi, who took delivery of the consignment, said the integration of scanning into the clearance procedure for imports was in line with global best practice for trade facilitation.

He said that the key objective of deploying scanners was to reduce very significantly the time needed for physical inspection of goods, which generates extensive cost and creates multiple burdens as well as inconveniences for both the importers and the Customs operations. Read more

Apapa gridlock persists, Lagos blames NPA, MAN laments losses (Punch)

The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, and Head of the Traffic Management and Enforcement Compliance Team Apapa, Toyin Fayinka, has blamed the Nigerian Ports Authority for the renewed congestion at the Lagos ports and the consequent upsurge in traffic gridlock along the Apapa area.

In February, the NPA introduced the electronic truck call-up system also known as ‘Eto’ designed to address gridlock on roads leading to the ports.

However, there has been an upsurge in traffic congestion raising concerns among various stakeholders.

Imo mob lynches alleged ESN member trying to enforce sit-at-home order (Vanguard)

A section of the ever busy, but deserted, dual carriage Onitsha-Enugu Expressway, leading to New Motor Spare Parts, Nkpor, Anambra State, on Monday.

An angry mob lynched an alleged leader of the proscribed Eastern Security Network (ESN) on Monday while trying to enforce a sit-at-home order alongside his gang members.

Commissioner of Police in Imo, Mr Rabiu Hussaini, confirmed the incident in a press statement signed by the police spokesman, CSP Mike Abattam.

He stated that before police patrol team could arrive at the scene, the ESN member had been lynched, while his gang members fled.

He added that Hussaini had directed that the lynching suspects must be handed over to the police for proper investigation. Read more

VAT row: Fed Govt directs remittance by firms to FIRS (Nation)

As the deadline for the remittance of the Value Added Tax (VAT) for August expires today, the Federal Government has told companies to pay to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

This, it said, would accord with the order by the Court of Appeal for a status quo antebellum.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN) clarified that the status quo referred to the state of affairs before parties went to court.

Nigeria records 20,000 cases of snake bites, 2,000 deaths annually (Vanguard)

The Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Health, (FMOH), Sen. Olorunnimbe Mamora, has disclosed that Nigeria records an average of 15,000 to 20,000 cases of snakebite every year.

He said out of the figure, about 2000 people are killed and between 1,700 and 2,000 people have one leg or arm amputated to save their lives following a snakebite.

Mamora made the disclosures on Monday, at a ministerial press briefing marking the 2021 International Snakebite Awareness Day (ISBAD), in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that since 2018, ISBAD had been commemorated on Sept. 19, representing an opportunity for Nigerians to raise awareness of one of the world’s biggest hidden health crises. Read more

NASA selects landing site for Moon rover mission (BBC)

Nasa is sending a robotic rover to look for water-ice near a crater at the Moon’s South Pole.

In 2023, the golf cart-sized vehicle will land near the western edge of Nobile Crater, a 73km-wide depression that is almost permanently in shadow.

The Viper mission will support plans for human exploration of the Moon, because the ice could be mined for use as drinking water and rocket fuel.

Ashton Sanders has joined the cast of the biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody, the upcoming feature about the late musical icon Whitney Houston. Sanders will play Bobby Brown, and sources also tell Deadline that Black Label Media is coming on board to co-finance the film with Compelling Pictures and Primary Wave Music.

Naomi Ackie is set to play Houston in the Kasi Lemmons-directed film. The screenplay is written by Academy Award nominee Anthony McCarten, and will take audiences on an emotional, energetic journey through Houston’s career and music.

Russian university shooter published sick post detailing his planned crime before murdering six people in brutal Perm gun attack (RT)

The detained Russian university shooter Timur Bekmansurov published a long, detailed explanation of his preparation, in which he claimed it was his dream to commit mass murder by any means possible and said he was not a terrorist.

On Monday morning, Bekmansurov entered Perm State University, the leading educational institution in the city just over 1,000km east of Moscow. According to reports, the 18-year-old killed at least six people and injured 28 more.

Bekmansurov, a first-year student, had been at the university for ten days, studying forensic science.

Speaking to the TASS news agency, a representative from the regional medical service said the shooter is alive but wounded and is currently in intensive care. Read more

Texas abortion: Doctor sued in first known challenges of new law (BBC)

A Texas doctor who admitted to breaking the state’s new abortion legislation has been sued, in what could be a test of how lawful the mandate is.

Writing for the Washington Post, Alan Braid said he had carried out a termination on a woman who was in the early stages of her pregnancy but “beyond the state’s new limit”.

Former lawyers in Arkansas and Illinois filed lawsuits against him on Monday.
