Lagos SARS brutalise, extort money from man for holding brother’s passport (Punch)

A man, identified simply as Debola, has accused men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of brutality and extortion over his brother’s passport found in his possession during a stop-and-search operation in the Epe area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Debola was travelling to Akure when the policemen stopped the bus conveying him and subjected all the passengers to a search.

When it got to Debola’s turn, it was learnt that the policemen found nothing incriminating on him, but took him into custody because of his brother’s passport found in his possession.

Debola said in a series of tweets, which was reposted on Instablog9ja, that the policemen accused him of going to assassinate his brother, adding that when he got to the Ketu Ereyun Police Station, the cops demanded N1.5m for his release. Read more

Peacemaker stabbed to death as rivals fight over girlfriend in Lagos (Punch)

A peacemaker, Muhammed Obadimeji, has been killed while separating a fight between two men, Eniola Ayodele and Kayode Babashola, in the Dopemu area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Ayodele and Babashola were fighting over their girlfriend, Barakat Wasiu, when Obadimeji intervened to make peace.

While separating the rivals, it was learnt that Ayodele, who was armed with a sharp object, allegedly stabbed Obadimeji in the chest in an attempt to stab Babashola.

The impact of the stabbing made Obadimeji to fall to the ground, but as the 25-year-old was clutching on to life, some good Samaritans came to his rescue and rushed him to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, for urgent attention.

However, it was learnt that Obadimeji died in the process of being treated. Read more

Hoodlums, motorcyclists fight in Lagos, police recover gun (Punch)

Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command, have arrested four hoodlums at the Mayfair Gardens, Awoyaya, in the Ibeju-Lekki area of the state.

It was gathered that the police recovered a locally-made pistol and four unexpended cartridges from the suspects, identified as Rasheed Odetola, John Zion, Damilare Salami and Adeboye Dayo.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the men were arrested after a fight broke out between them and some motorcyclists, who came from the Northern part of the country.

In the course of the scuffle, a member of the gang reportedly stole the phone of one of the motorcyclists, which was discovered.

The police were called in and investigation led to the recovery of the gun. Read more

Court remands businessman for producing adulterated oil (Punch)

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday made an order for the remand of a businessman, Ibegbu Anayo, in custody, over allegations that he adulterated Total and Mobil engine oil brands and offered same for sale to unsuspecting members of the public as genuine.

Justice Rilwan Aikawa made the remand order shortly after Anayo was arraigned before him by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria.

In the 12 counts against Anayo, SON alleged that he conspired with some persons still at large to “indulge in the production of adulterated/substandard Total and Mobil engine lubricants for public consumption.”

The prosecution told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 15 at the Mammy Market, Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos State.

It said the engine oil produced and sold by Anayo was “not of the quality, nature and efficacy expected of the products,” and that he made a calculated attempt “to deceive unsuspecting consumers that the products are genuine Total or Mobil products.” Read more

Police nab alleged Facebook fraudster in Lagos (Guardian)

A self-acclaimed prophet who specialises in swindling ladies in dire need of husband on social media by having sexual intercourse with them has been arrested.

The suspect, Williams Benard, who operated as Evans Joris, a pseudo name on his Facebook account, was arrested by the Isheri-Oshun Police Station, where he and a member of his syndicate are being interrogated.

According to the police, the suspect’s mode of operation was to send friendly requests to his female victims and offer business proposal or marriage promises. He would earn the victim’s trust, after which he would invite them to hotel rooms where the syndicate would rape them and take their nude photographs, which they would threaten to post on social media if they raise any alarm. With the nude photographs, the syndicate would begin to blackmail their victims, extorting huge sums of money from them.

The last operation that landed Benard in police net was when he and one of his members, after extorting money from a 19-year-old girl, raped and started blackmailing her before later abducting her to be used as sex slave. Read more

Man stabs neighbour to death over alleged promiscuity (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a man, Adekunle Adeyemi, alleged to have stabbed his neighbour, Stanley Dickson, to death in the Grammar School, Ikorodu area of the state.

Adeyemi, currently on the run, was accused of having an affair with a neighbour’s wife, identified as Chisom Onuoha, an allegation which led to an argument in the their apartment.

The incident occurred on Red Block Street in the Grammar School area on July 30 and was reported to the Ikorodu Police Division.

A police report obtained by our correspondent from the division noted that there was an altercation in the apartment over whether Adeyemi and Onuoha were having an affair with each other or not. Read more

Home teacher arrested for defiling six-year-old pupil in Lagos (Punch)

A 50-year-old old teacher, Uzor Anthony, has been apprehended by the police for allegedly defiling a six-year-old girl he was teaching at her parents’ home in the Olodi Apapa area of Lagos.

Anthony reportedly committed the crime while he was teaching the girl identified as Bimpe (not real name) when her parents were not around.

It was learnt that the victim narrated what happened to her mother when she returned home and the case was reported at the Tolu Police Station.

A police source disclosed to Sunday PUNCH that the suspect denied having sex with Bimpe who consistently said she was defiled. Read more

Man attempts to bribe policemen after stealing iPhone 11 from passenger in Lagos (Tribune)

A man was on Friday arrested in the Ipaja area of Lagos State for stealing an iPhone 11 from a passenger inside a tricycle and even went ahead to bribe policemen so as to allow him to escape.

The man, Ismaila Yusuf, was arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command on Friday afternoon after the owner of the phone recognised him and raised the alarm which prompted the officers to give him a hot chase.

According to the RRS in its Twitter handle, when the man, who even has an identity card, was eventually arrested, he pleaded and offered to give them bribe which the officers rejected, leading to his eventual arrest.

He was said to have stolen the phone from the victim two weeks ago, but on Friday, the victim saw him in the same Ipaja area and his alarm led to the arrest of the man who has now been detained at the Ipaja Police Station for further investigation. Read more

Drivers flee as petrol tanker kills one in Lagos (Punch)

A yet-to-be-identified woman lost her life on Friday when a tanker crashed around the Nigerian Army Signal Barracks in the Mile 2 area of Lagos State.

The tanker driver was said to be conveying 55,000 litres of petrol to a destination in the state when he rammed into a pothole around 12.30 am and lost control of the vehicle in the process.

It was learnt that the tanker fell to the ground and trapped the female victim.

The Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the driver and his assistant fled from the scene of the crash, adding that the impact of the accident killed the female victim. Read more

Okada rider crushed to death on Oshodi-Apapa highway (Guardian)

Tragedy struck yesterday at the Toyota Bus Stop on the Oshodi-Apapa expressway, when a commercial motorcycle rider was crushed to death by an articulated truck moving towards Oshodi.

The passenger on the motorcycle escaped death by the whiskers as he immediately jumped off the bike.

This was the second of such incident in two weeks after a container fell off its truck and landed on a commercial bus at Ilasa Bus Stop, killing two passengers on July 26.

According to an eyewitness, the motorcyclist was crossing the expressway at about 3:30p.m. when he hit an SUV with registration number AKM 970 AA that slowed down to negotiate into the bridge leading to Airport Road. Read more

Businessman jailed two years for stealing N9m (Punch)

The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja, on Thursday, sentenced a businessman, Olarenwaju Gbadamosi, to two years’ imprisonment for stealing N9m.

Gbadamosi was sentenced by Justice Mojisola Dada after pleading guilty to an amended charge of a money by false pretences preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The convict, on November 19, 2010, stole the sum of N9m from one John Stevens.

According to the EFCC, the offence is contrary to Section 390 of the Criminal Code, Cap C17, Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003. Read more
