Scholz pledges greater security for Germany’s Jewish community

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced increased security measures for Jewish institutions in Germany following an attempted attack on a synagogue and community centre in Berlin.

“It is very clear that we will not and will never accept attacks against Jewish institutions,’’ Scholz told journalists in Cairo, where he is meeting with Egyptian leaders.

Scholz said he was personally outraged by the attack and reports of anti-Semitic slogans being shouted at unauthorized pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Berlin, and said the vast majority of Germans feel the same way.

The chancellor said that violent attacks, riots or protests with anti-Semitic slogans are unacceptable in Germany.

Authorities must restrict illegal demonstrations and “the police have to protect Jewish institutions,” Scholz said. “And we will do that, and strengthen everything.’” (dpa/NAN)
