Schoolboy steers school bus to safety after driver passes out

Dramatic footage shows the moment a schoolboy saves the day after his bus driver falls unconscious behind the wheel.

The 13-year-old heroically takes over the steering wheel and brakes, bringing his classmates to safety.

Dillon Reeves was on his way home from Carter Middle School in Warren, Massachusetts, along with 66 other students when his bus driver became light-headed and fainted on Wednesday afternoon.

Surveillance footage shows the driver using her radio to notify others that she felt “dizzy” and was going to pull over.

Before she could bring the bus to a safe stop, the driver then starts to shake violently before collapsing over the wheel.

For several seconds the bus rolls on until Reeves darts to the front to take control.

The courageous student quickly hits the brake pedal and parks the bus near a wide road.

Amid the chaos and confusion, Reeves manages to tell his friends to call 911, a video posted by WXYZ showed.

No one was injured during the horrific incident but the students can be heard in the footage screaming as Reeves slammed on the breaks.

The bus driver was transported to a local hospital where she remains under care.

The Warren Consolidated School officials held a press conference to honour Reeves’ act of heroism.

“He stood up, he assessed the situation and saw that the driver had passed out. This was an extraordinary act of courage,” Superintendent Robert Livernois said.

“He jumped up from his seat, threw his backpack down, ran to the front and grabbed the wheel and brought the bus to a stop.” (Express)
