Seized 25 trucks: A/Court dismisses Evans’ N200m suit against police (Nation)

The Court of Appeal Lagos division on Thursday dismissed an appeal by alleged kidnap kingpin Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, aka Evans, challenging the seizure of his 25 trucks by the police.

A three-man panel of the court, in a unanimous decision, upheld the judgment of Justice Hadizat Rabiu-Shagari of the Federal High Court on the matter.

The panel held that the appeal lacked merit and dismissed the same.

The justices upheld the police’s contention that the trucks were seized as suspected proceeds of crime in the execution of a valid search warrant. Read more

Navy rescues 12 sailors from sinking fishing vessel off Lagos coast (dailytrust)

Officers and ratings of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT have rescued 12 crew members on-board a sinking fishing vessel, LADY BARNARA, off Lagos waters.

The Navy said effort was ongoing to rescue the 13th crew member who was still missing as of Tuesday evening, five days after the ill-fated vessel capsized.

Investigation revealed that the vessel had developed an engine problem and sailed into a heavy storm which capsized the ship.

The Commander, NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Bashir Mohammed, in a statement confirming the mishap said the incident occurred on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at about 11.15 pm. Read more

Bizman lands in Kirikiri for alleged defilement of three underage daughters (Punch)

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State has remanded a 43-year-old businessman, Emeka Orisakwe, for allegedly defiling his three underage daughters.

The police, on Wednesday, charged Orisakwe, who resides at Maza Maza, Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos, with sexual assault.

The Magistrate, Ejiro Kubeinje, did not take the defendant’s plea and ordered that he should be remanded in the Kirikiri Custodial Centre.

Kubeinje directed the police to send the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice. Read more

33,140 passengers travelled Lagos/Ibadan railway in July -official (Tribune)

Lagos District Manager, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr Jerry Oche, has said that the corporation recorded 33,140 passenger-traffic from Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge railway in July.

Oche, who made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday, said that the corporation recorded more passengers in the standard class coach category.

“In July, the total passenger traffic on board the standard class stood at 24,948, out of the 33,140 passenger-traffic.

“For business class, we recorded 6,995 and for first class, we had 1,167, while the total passenger traffic recorded from Lagos to Ibadan in July stood at 33,140. Read more

Lagos shuts 20 pharmacies, patent medicine stores (Punch)

The Lagos State task force on counterfeit, fake drugs, and unwholesome processed foods has shut 20 pharmacies and patent medicine stores at Shomolu, Bariga, and Oworonshoki areas of the State.

The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, in a statement on Thursday, said the affected pharmacies and patent medicine stores were shut for contravening regulations guiding the operations of pharmacies and patent medicine stores, including indulging in illegal practices and failing to comply with the regulatory standard.

Abayomi was quoted to have said this after reviewing the report of the recent monitoring, inspection, and enforcement exercises carried out by the taskforce.

He said, “The sealing of the affected pharmacies and patent medicine stores was in accordance with the provisions of Section C34 of the Counterfeit, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Miscellaneous Provision Act of 1999.” Read more

FCT Minister flags off over N1.8b Kagini Rail Station access road (Tribune)

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, on Thursday, flagged off the construction of access road and car park worth over N1.8 billion for the Kagini light rail station.

Malam Bello, while flagging off the project in Abuja, said the station was designed to enable residents within the area and other adjoining districts to enjoy the benefits of a modern rail transportation system and to also help to reduce carbon emissions that destroy the environment.

He said the administration needs to be flagged off following the approval by President Muhammadu Buhari early this year, as part of efforts towards accelerating infrastructural development in the nation’s capital. Read more

The Federal Government has says it has procured over 29 million single dose of Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccines at the rate of $298.5 million (over N122 billion).

Executive Director/CEO of National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuiab, said this Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during the ministerial briefing organised by Presidential Communication Team.

He said the procurement was to enable the country vaccinate 70 percent of eligible members of the population and combat the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

He said the 176,000 doses of Johnson and Johnson vaccines that arrived the country with roll out schedule for Monday was part of 29 million doses the government procured. Read more

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Benue State Command has arrested a man with a fabricated high calibre G3 rifle and 78 rounds of live ammunition.

The Chairman, NDLEA, retired Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, who said this during a news conference on Thursday in Abuja noted that the suspect would be handed over to the appropriate authority for further investigation.

Marwa said that the checkpoint was to stop and search vehicles for drugs, noting that NDLEA arrest when other criminal items such as heavy weapons as in this instance were found.

Marwa said that the suspect was arrested on Aug. 4 in a bus belonging to enroute Onitsha to Jos where the vehicle was flagged down at Aliade checkpoint for search. Read more

Seungri has been jailed for three years for arranging prostitution and gambling.

He was convicted by a military court of organising sex services for businessmen he wanted to invest in his nightclub.

Covid: Germany fears thousands got saline, not vaccine from nurse (BBC)

Authorities in north Germany have asked more than 8,000 people to get repeat Covid vaccinations because a nurse is suspected of having injected saline instead of vaccine in many cases.

Police are investigating the nurse’s actions at a vaccination centre in Friesland, near the North Sea coast.

Initially just six people were believed to have received the harmless salt solution there in March and April.

Many of those affected were aged over 70 – a high-risk group in the pandemic.
