The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu has placed Assistant Inspector General of Police and Commissioners of Police in the FCT and neighbouring states on red alert. The Police said its action became imperative following the violent protest by members of the El-Zakzakky Group at the National Assembly in Abuja on Tuesday. The protest which left nine Police personnel injured also led to the destruction of vehicles and other valuable items. Read more

Elisha Abbo Tuesday appeared before a Senate committee set up to investigate his actions in viral footage where he assaulted a woman in a sex toy shop in Abuja. Oluremi Tinubu, a member of the committee, asked Abbo to swear an oath before saying anything. But he bluntly refused; saying the case was in court. “This matter is in court. I cannot be talking in front of cameras when the matter is already in court. That’s subjudice,” Abbo said. Read more

The Executive Secretary (ES) of the National Human Rights Commission, Mr Tony Ojukwu, said on Tuesday that in the face of conflicts the Nigerian Military had been actively engaged. Ojukwu said this in Abuja in his welcome address at the opening ceremony of a four-day advanced training on human rights for Nigerian Army officers by the human rights institute. Court orders Diezani’s land forfeited to FG (Punch)

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday ordered that a plot of land in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, belonging to a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, be forfeited to the Federal Government. Justice Chuka Obiozor made the forfeiture order following an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The anti-graft agency told the judge that the land, “measuring 7,903.71 – 8,029.585 square metres” and designated as Plot 9, Azikiwe Road, Old GRA (UAC Property on Forces Avenue), Port Harcourt, was reasonably suspected to part of proceeds of unlawful activities. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the appointment of Mr Jide Ajani, the immediate past Sunday Editor of Vanguard newspaper, as his Special Adviser on Media. The Nigeria Medical Association has blamed the state governments for the poor implementation of Primary Healthcare programmes in the country. Tunisian authorities rescued 71 migrants as their boat began to sink after setting out from neighbouring Libya for Italy, the National Guard said Tuesday. Monday night’s rescue operation came just days after a boat taking the same route across the Mediterranean capsized with more than 80 people on board. Mobile internet services were restored across Sudan Tuesday following a court order, weeks after the ruling generals imposed a blockade in the wake of a brutal crackdown on protesters. Demonstrators were violently dispersed on June 3 by men in military fatigues, who stormed a weeks-long protest camp outside army headquarters in Khartoum where Sudanese had camped to demand that the generals step down. Armed men, shooting and beating protesters in a pre-dawn raid, killed dozens of demonstrators and wounded hundreds. Read more

Denmark says it plans to regulate popular influencers after an Instagram star posted a suicide note online. The influencer, Fie Laursen, posted the note on Instagram, where she has more than 336,000 followers. It remained online for two days before her family managed to take it down. The family confirmed in an Instagram post that she was recovering in hospital. The minister of children and education said influencers must, as other media, have an “editorial responsibility”.
