There were shocking revelations at the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution for Victims of SARS and Related Abuses on Saturday.
A deacon with the Apostolic Church, David Komolafe, told the panel how he lost a tooth and fiancée to police brutality while a housewife revealed how the minions of law drove a vehicle over her leg and broke her ankle.
Deacon Komolafe told the Justice Doris Okuwobi-led panel of inquiry that his ugly encounter with the police occurred in 2010 as a police officer bullied and beat him to a pulp over an issue he described as trivial. Read more
Police arrest three Lagos-based robbery suspects in Ogun (Vanguard)
Operatives of Ogun State Command of Nigeria Police have arrested three suspected armed robbers who came from Lagos State to carry out robbery operation in Ogun State.
A statement by the command spokesman, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi said the three men; Samuel Sunday, a 20 years old resident of Fagba in Lagos State, Adeleke Mustapha; a 22years old resident of Ajala area of Lagos State and Joel Rotimi, a 19 years old resident of Taju Bello street Agbado, Ogun state were arrested on Thursday, 14 January 2021.
Oyeyemi noted that the arrest of the suspected robbers followed a distress call received by the police in Ajuwon from residents of Iju Aga area of Ajuwon at about 1:45 am that armed hoodlums numbering about six have invaded the area and dispossessing innocent members of the community of their valuables. Tenant arraigned for biting off landlord’s lip (DailyTrust)
A mild drama took place on Tuesday in court when a police prosecutor asked a magistrate for a stiff punishment on a tenant for allegedly biting off his landlord’s lip for asking for money meant for his rent.
The tenant, Ernest Ekeh, was charged with assault and breach of peace before an Ejigbo Chief Magistrate Court, Lagos.
The prosecutor, Kenneth Asibor, said the tenant had before the attack, threatened to deal with his landlord, Matthew Kunle, if he dare to show face at his door post over the issue of rent payment.
The police said the incident which occurred at Igando area of Lagos was reported to the police at Igando Division by the landlord.

Lagos landlords accuse police of protecting hoodlums while demolishing buildings (Punch)
Landlords and allottees of the Alma Beach Estate in the Lekki area of Lagos State have accused policemen of conniving with hoodlums allegedly hired by trespassers to demolish their houses in a bid to take over the land.
PUNCH Metro gathered that armed policemen allegedly deployed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police were protecting the land-grabbers said to be disturbing the peace of the area and sacking residents from their homes.
Perplexed by the development, the landlords and allottees allegedly threatened a breakdown of law and order in order to protect their homes as the police were said to have stood firm in protecting the land-grabbers.
It was learnt that the problem started when NICON Trustees allegedly laid claim to 150 plots of land in the estate without showing any authentic survey or registered title to back up the claim. Read more
EFCC seeks to upturn Lagos’ ‘pardon’ to three convicts (Guardian)
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has described the ‘pardon’ granted an Indian businessman, Ashok Israni, and two officials of Keystone Bank, Anayo Nwosu and Olajide Oshodi, by the Lagos State Government, as unlawful and urged the Court of Appeal, Lagos, to set it aside.
Justice Kudirat Jose of the Lagos State High Court in Igbosere had in December 2019 jailed Israni, Nwosu, and Oshodi on an amended 15-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining N855 million by false pretense, and sentenced them to five years each.
In her judgment, she had also convicted Keystone Bank and NULEC Industries Limited belonging to Israni. The companies were ordered to pay a fine of N20 million to the Federal Government.
She also ordered the convicts to restitute N395 million to the victim of the fraud. Read more
Lagos: RRS impounds 6 vehicles with covered number plates
The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) has impounded six vehicles with covered number plates following a directive of the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
This was contained in a statement signed by RPS’ Head, Public Affairs, Mr Femi Moliki, who said five of the vehicles had been transferred to the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences, and that the sixth, a Mercedes Benz ML 350, was intercepted and impounded on Victoria Island.
He commended the executives of NURTW for putting in place the edifice, adding that arrangements were in place to commission a police outpost at the main market. (DailyTrust)
Death of 22-year-old tech entrepreneur ‘brings back’ #EndSARS (Guardian)
Tributes have been pouring in for David Ntekim-Rex, a 22-year-old tech entrepreneur in Lagos who was shot dead by robbers in Jibowu axis of Yaba area.
Co-founder of an immigration tech firm Tunde Omotoye said David was recently employed to head a unit of his company before his death.
“This is so sad and I am actually speechless,” Omotoye tweeted. “I got introduced to David just on Tuesday. He joined a startup team I belong to as Head, Product Design.
“The system has indeed failed David. It has failed him & his family totally. I pray his family finds the strength for this loss.” Read more
Roommate of man accused of dating Lagos teenager stabbed to death (Punch)
One Toheeb and his friends are currently on the run after allegedly stabbing one Akin Okebukola to death in the Alakuko area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the men were allegedly mobilised by a woman, identified simply as Iya Abe, who was reportedly assaulted when a friend, Morenikeji Olawunmi, invited her and one Ajoke Bello, to threaten one Abu on the suspicion that he had been having sexual relations with her 16-year-old daughter.
Angered by the injuries she sustained during the assault, Iya Abe reportedly informed her son, Toheeb, who mobilised two other yet-to-be-identified friends to Olawunmi’s residence on Oluobadare Street Gbadabiu area of Alakuko, on Saturday, January 18, 2020.
A resident of the area, Johnson Idowu, said Abu fled from home before Toheeb and his friends got there, adding that in a bid to avenge his mother’s injuries, the men pounced on Abu’s roommate, Okebukola, and allegedly stabbed him with broken bottles in his leg. Read more
Woman attacked on Lekki/Ikoyi link bridge (Guardian)
A woman was attacked, yesterday, along Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge in Lagos while passersby watched. She was left with bruised face, a broken finger and a gash on her thigh.
Her sister, whose name appeared on Twitter as Lisa Folawiyo, said: “It was my sister screaming. She was mugged and really roughed up. Traumatic. She screamed but no one helped. Everyone walked by like nothing was happening. I love humans.
“Other than the broken finger, bruised up face and hands and a gash in her thigh, she’s doing okay. Thank God. It could have been worse. But it has left her quite shaken and traumatised.”
People have been advised to be careful when jogging on the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge as joggers are now getting attacked while streetlights are off. Read more
2 Lagos cultists nabbed during gun battle with police (Punch)
Two suspected cultists, Timileyin Omobolaji and another identified simply as Waliyu, have been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly terrorising residents of Igbelara in the Ikorodu area of the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Tuesday that the suspects were arrested during a gun battle with the cops and that others escaped with bullet wounds.
Adejobi said, “Police operatives attached to the Ikorodu Division, on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, around 12.30pm, engaged some suspected members of the Aiye Confraternity in a gun duel in the Igbelara area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
“The police responded to a distress call from members of the public that some suspected cultists were seen in the Igbelara area with weapons to foment trouble and the police, with the help of some community members, raced to the scene and the gang opened fire on them. Read more
Youths overpower robbers, recover arms, operational motorbike in Lagos (Vanguard)
Plans by a six-man robbery gang to carry out an operation in Igbolerin area of Lagos have been frustrated by youths in the area. The robbers said to have been armed, stormed the area at about 11.30 pm, Monday. They were said to have parked their operational motorbikes close to the building they intended to attack its occupants when one of the youths raised the alarm which alerted others. By Clever Advertising The robbers fired some shots in a bid to scare the youths but exhausted their bullets in the process. They managed to escape, abandoning some of their weapons.
State Police Command, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, explained further that “The suspected armed robbers came on two unregistered motorbikes with the intention of attacking their targets before they were repelled by the youths who have been involved in the community policing strategies of the command.
