The presidential candidate of the African Action Alliance in the February 2019 General Elections, Omoyele Sowore, on Friday applied to the Federal High Court in Abuja to set aside its order permitting the Department of State Services to detain him for 45 days. Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow protests, through his lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), contended, among others in the 19-ground application, that the order issued by the court breached his constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights. Police begins investigation into killing of bus driver on Kaduna-Abuja highway (Guardian)
The Commissioner of Police Kaduna State Command, Mr Ali Janga has ordered immediate investigation into the death of a bus driver reportedly shot to death by a policeman on Friday along Kaduna-Abuja expressway. The Command Public Relation Officers DSP Yakubu Sabo said in a press statement issued on Friday in Kaduna. The Commissioner said the Inspector involved in the incident has been arrested and proper investigation would be conducted into the circumstances of the killing. Read more
Sallah: FRSC deploys 2,490 officers, special marshal in Lagos (Punch)
The Lagos Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps says it has deployed 1, 214 officers and 1,276 Special Marshal to manage traffic during the Sallah break. The FRSC Sector Commander, Mr. Hyginus Omeje, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos that the officers were mobilised to carry out the mandate of the corps. According to him, special attention will be given to Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Lekki-Epe Expressway and Lagos-Badagry Expressway. Read more

Motorcyclist killing: Ohanaeze youth council petitions UN, AU (Punch)
The apex socio-cultural youth body in Igboland, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, on Friday said that it had petitioned the United Nations and the Africa Union on the “unprofessional conduct and corrupt practices” of the military in the South-East region of the country. The petition followed the alleged killing of a motorcyclist, Chimaobi Nwogu, by an Army officer in Abia State on Wednesday. Customs arrests notorious rice smuggler (Nation)
The Ogun State Customs Command on Wednesday said it had arrested a notorious suspected smuggler in the Owode area of Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State. According to the Comptroller of Customs in the state, Michael Agbara, the suspect popularly called Victor Owode was arrested for allegedly smuggling several bags of rice into the country. He said the suspect had been charged before the Federal High Court, Ikoyi and remanded in prison. Read more

Sorrow and anguish have continued to prevail at the home of the Nwawuike family in Ikorodu, an outskirt in Lagos State following the mysterious disappearance of their daughter, Cynthia Amarachi, 25, after she boarded a vehicle from Ibadan to Lagos to spend the weekend with her parents on March 15, 2019. The political science graduate of the University of Lagos was undergoing her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in Akure, Ondo State. The body of a middle aged man has been found hanging in front of a shop in Asaba, the Delta capital. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday in the Umuagu area of Asaba, left many residents of the area in shock. North Korea tests ‘short-range ballistic missiles’ (BBC)
North Korea has fired two missiles into the sea, its fifth such launch in recent weeks. The missiles are thought to be short-range ballistic missiles, South Korea’s military says. El Paso shooter admits he targeted Mexicans ‘to stop Hispanic invasion’ (Metro)
The man who police say gunned down 22 people at a Walmart in El Paso admitted that he was targeting Mexicans. Authorities said the shooter, 21-year-old Patrick Crusius, ‘stated his target were Mexicans,’ according to an affidavit obtained by CNN. Investigators said they believe Crusius wrote a hate-filled document in which he said he wanted to stop the ‘Hispanic invasion’ of Texas. Read more
China bans airline staff backing Hong Kong protest (BBC)
China has ordered the Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific to suspend any staff who support pro-democracy protests in the territory. Beijing’s demand coincided with a peaceful rally at Hong Kong’s airport, where thousands occupied a terminal. Cathay also faced pressure online after China’s state-run press fuelled a #BoycottCathayPacific hashtag, which trended on Chinese social media. Major power failure affects homes and transport in UK (BBC)
Nearly a million people have been affected by a major power cut across large areas of England and Wales, affecting homes and transport networks. National Grid said it was caused by issues with two power generators but the problem was now resolved. Blackouts were reported across the Midlands, the South East, South West and North East of England, and Wales. Russia explosion: Five confirmed dead in rocket blast (BBC)
Five people were killed and three injured following a rocket explosion on a naval test range in Russia on Thursday, state nuclear company Rosatom confirmed. Rostacom said the accident occurred during tests on a liquid propellant rocket engine. The three injured staff members suffered serious burns in the accident. Authorities had previously said that two people died and six were injured in the blast at the site in Nyonoksa. Read more
