Students to block Abuja airport, Kaduna road today (Punch)

The National Association of Nigerian Students has said its members will block the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja and Kaduna-Abuja Expressway on Wednesday (today) as part of its protest against the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The PUNCH had reported that students, on Monday, blocked the access roads to both the local and international terminals of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, leaving air passengers and others stranded.

Speaking to The PUNCH on Tuesday, the chairman, NANS National Task Force, ‘EndASUUstrike,’ Olumide Ojo, said students did not protest at the Apapa Port as earlier scheduled for Tuesday to allow them strategise and plan for an impactful protest on Wednesday.

Ojo said, “We decided to use today (Tuesday) to appraise our protest on Monday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja. By tomorrow (Wednesday) morning, we will be grounding the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport, Abuja and Kaduna-Abuja Expressway. Read more 

556 outstanding LASU students get scholarship (Guardian)

The management of Lagos State University has awarded a scholarship of 50 per cent refund of school fees in the academic session to 556 outstanding undergraduate students of the institution.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that this is in line with a promise made by Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, when she assumed duty on Sept. 20, 2021, as the ninth substantive Vice-Chancellor of LASU.

She promised a 50 per cent refund of school fees to students with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.50 every academic session.

Olatunji-Bello had said that the decision to introduce the policy was to promote healthy competition among the students.

The VC announced the scholarship awards to 556 beneficiaries at a public lecture on the first anniversary of her assumption of office on Tuesday, in Lagos. Read more

5 arraigned over N40.6m fraud in Lagos (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned five people before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly forging and stealing N40,604,929,73, from a health company in the state.

The defendants, Martins Isuman 41, Alaran Olayinka 23, Malomo Adeola 36, Falilat Babatunde 42 and Patience Ekere 42, were arraigned before Magistrate Mrs T. A. Ojo, on Thursday.

They are facing five-count bordering on conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence, forgery, stealing and breach of public peace, preferred against them by the police.

The police prosecutor, Supol Francis Igbinosa, told the court that the defendants and others now at large, conspired and committed the alleged offences between January 2019 and July 2022. Read more 

How lawyer died chasing husband, alleged side chick (Nation)

More facts have emerged on how a lawyer and mother of three died in a crash while chasing her husband and an alleged side chick in Calabar last Sunday.

The Nation gathered the deceased, Claret Opara Bassey has been married for over 10 years to Mr. Sunday Bassey.

That fateful Sunday, she reportedly got a call from one of her friends that her husband was sighted in a shopping mall with the alleged side chick.

She was said to have immediately taken one of their cars and headed to the mall. On reaching there, the husband was about to leave the premises of the shopping mall and inside his car with the sidekick identified as Laticia.

Upon sighting the wife, he hurriedly drove off with Laticia on the front seat, making the angry wife to go after them. Read more

How I raped, killed teenager inside church –Suspect (Punch)

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, Tosin Kolade, for allegedly raping and killing a teenage girl, Ifeoluwa Apanpa.

The suspect, who was paraded on Tuesday told journalists that he lured the girl inside a church where he raped her and strangulated her to death.

The suspect his mum is a cleaner at the church where he committed the crime. He said he had waited for his victim to pass through the place to her church and he requested her to help him carry some chairs when he pounced on her.

“On 17th September 2022, I went back home around 1pm from work because we didn’t have work that day.  We were just sleeping at the shop, I told my boss that I wanted to go and ease myself, my boss allowed me and said I should come back quickly.

“When I got home, I took the key to our church because my mum is the cleaner of the church and went to church. I  packed all chairs in the church together, I knew the time Ifeoluwa would pass through our church on the way to her church. Read more

How medical doctor, others were arrested over fake surgery in C’River (Vanguard)

A medical doctor and CEO of Life First Medical Centre, Dr Austin Adugba, has been arrested by the Police in collaboration with the Cross River State Task Force on quackery and related violation in the healthcare delivery system of the state.

Briefing newsmen in Calabar, on Tuesday, Chairman of the Task Force, Dr David Ushie,  said six persons, including Dr Adugba, conspired to carry out the fake surgeries on nine persons out of the 10 patients that were found in the facilities visited by the team.

Ushie also revealed that Adugba has allegedly been recruiting quacks in his facility (Life First) and mobilising them to carry out all sorts of illicit activities in rural communities and defrauding unsuspecting members of such localities.

“This briefing is about fake doctors operating in Aladim community of Ogoja LGA, it’s about the sad incident that we received a tip-off concerning some wonder surgeons in the community.

Guard arrested for beating labourer to death in Abuja (DailyTrust)

The police in the FCT have arrested a security guard for beating an 18-year-old labourer to death at Karsana, opposite Kubwa, Abuja.

City & Crime learnt that the incident happened on Sunday night at the site of a massive housing project.

Narrating the incident to City & Crime, a brother to the deceased, Abdussalam Isa, said his late sibling, Abdullahi, came to Abuja last Friday from Sabon-Birni in Sokoto State.

He said, “He joined me here to work as a labourer for this housing estate under construction. The facility is under our elder brother’s security guards.’’ Read more

INEC releases final list of presidential candidates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Tuesday released the final list of presidential candidates of all the political parties contesting next year general election.

In a statement, the INEC national commissioner in charge of publicity and chairman voters education, Festus Okoye said the commission also approved the final list of candidates for national elections (Presidential, Senatorial and Federal Constituencies) pursuant to section 32(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 8 of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2023 General Election. 

He said the  publication of the full names and addresses of all nominated candidates follows the political parties’ conduct of primaries and completion of the nomination exercise. 

According to Okoye, Nigerians may recall that at end of the process, the personal particulars of all nominated candidates were displayed in their constituencies nationwide as provided by section 29(3) of the Electoral Act. Read more

Uganda declares Ebola virus disease outbreak (Vanguard)

Uganda health officials on Tuesday declared another outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease following the confirmation of a case of the Sudan ebolavirus confirmed in Mubende district in the central part of the country.

The case was confirmed after Uganda Virus Research Institute tested a sample taken from a 24-year-old man.    This follows an investigation by the National Rapid Response team of six suspicious deaths that have occurred in the district this month. There are currently eight suspected cases who are receiving care in a health facility.

Ebola is a severe, often fatal illness affecting humans and other primates. It has six different species, three of which (Bundibugyo, Sudan and Zaire) have previously caused large outbreaks. Read more

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, dick clark productions and NBC announced Tuesday that the Golden Globe Awards honoring excellence in film and TV will air live on NBC and Peacock Jan. 10.

Tiffany Haddish and Aries Spears molestation lawsuit dropped by accuser (People)

The woman who accused Tiffany Haddish and comedian Aries Spears of molestation has dropped the lawsuit against them, according to multiple reports.

Per court documents obtained by TMZ, the plaintiff — a 22-year-old woman identified as Jane Doe — requested the case be dismissed with prejudice, meaning the plaintiff cannot refile the same claim again in that court.

“My family and I have known Tiffany Haddish for many years — and we now know that she would never harm me or my brother or help anyone else do anything that could harm us. We wish Tiffany the best and are glad that we can all put this behind us,” Jane Doe said in a statement to TMZ, who first reported the news.

Jane Doe and lawyers for Haddish and Spears did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment. Read more

Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez condemned Atletico Madrid on Tuesday for not taking a stand against the racist chants from their supporters aimed at Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior.

Some sectors of the crowd chanted “You are a monkey, Vinicius, you are a monkey,” before and during Real Madrid’s 2-1 win at Atletico’s Metropolitano stadium on Sunday, while missiles including lighters were thrown at him and Brazilian compatriot Rodrygo as they celebrated a goal.

Liga will report the events to the Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee but Atletico have not made a public statement about the incidents. “I’m a big supporter of Atlético Madrid, so I was very sad,” Sanchez told Politico while at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“I expected a strong message from the clubs against this kind of behaviour, this is what I will ask of my team. I think its important that football clubs take this kind of behaviour seriously and react.”

The storm was sparked after Pedro Bravo, the head of the Spanish football agents association, said on television that Vinicius needed to stop ‘acting the monkey’ when dancing to celebrate goals. Read more

Yusuf Alli wants world standard timing at Madojiemu athletics event (Guardian)

Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Yusuf Alli, has promised to provide an electronic timing device for the Princess Mabel Madojiemu Athletics Championships billed for September 29 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

The former African long jump champion wants to ensure the championships, meant for U-15 athletes, are run according to world standards.

“It is part of my contribution to the success of the championships,” Alli stated. “You never know if any of the young athletes can break a record, and so, if there is no acceptable timing device, the efforts are of no use to us.”

The championships are open only to schools in Edo State and, according to the organisers, all arrangements are in top gear as the schools are itching to participate in the catch-them-young event. Read more

Boxing legend Mike Tyson has revealed he is suffering from sciatica that sometimes leaves him ‘unable to talk’.

Fears over Tyson’s health grew last month after photographs emerged of him been pushed in a wheelchair through a Miami airport while also clutching a walking stick.

Asked about the incident, the former heavyweight champion revealed to Newsmax TV: ‘I have sciatica every now and then, it flares up.

‘When it flares up, I can’t even talk! Thank God it’s the only health problem I have. I’m splendid now.’

‘Everybody in my house is truly blessed and we’re all very grateful for whatever we have.’

Sciatica is a condition where the sciatica nerve, which runs from the lower back and spread down one leg, is irritated or compressed. Read more
