Subsidy: Fuel sells N600/litre, queues worsen as filling stations shut (Punch)

Less than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu declared an end to fuel subsidy, the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit commonly known as petrol has skyrocketed to N600 per litre from N195/l in many parts of the country.

The development equally triggered a 100 per cent hike in transport fares, while long queues resurfaced at fuel stations across Lagos, Abuja, Ilorin, Benin, Asaba, Port Harcourt, Kano, Makurdi and other major cities and urban areas.

To worsen the situation, many outlets shut down their facilities and refused to dispense fuel to motorists, further creating scarcity and sparking desperation and panic buying at the fuel stations that were opened to customers. Read more 

Petrol subsidy removal not immediate — Presidency Source (Vanguard)

The removal of petrol subsidy will no longer be immediate, Vanguard gathered authoritatively last night.

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had said in his inauguration speech Monday that the subsidy was gone, as it was not provided for in the 2023 budget.

But sources told Vanguard yesterday that implementation of the removal of subsidy would commence post-June.

The need to clarify issues, sources told Vanguard, informed the meeting the President had with the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mr. Mele Kyari, in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday. Tinubu orders DSS to vacate EFCC Lagos office immediately (Guardian)

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to vacate the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Ikoyi, Lagos, immediately.

Tinubu on Tuesday evening said if there were issues between the “two important agencies of government”, they would be resolved amicably.

The President said this, according to a statement by the State House.

Man gets life sentence for defiling 8-year-old daughter (Channels)

The Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court has sentenced a 42-year-old man, Sulaiman Usman, to life imprisonment for defiling his eight-year-old daughter.

Justice Rahman Oshodi sentenced Usman to life imprisonment after finding him guilty as charged.

In October 2019, the Lagos State Government had arraigned Usman before Justice Sybil Nwaka but following her elevation to the Court of Appeal, the case was reassigned to Justice Oshodi. Read more 

Heavy rainfall worsens Lagos gridlock (Punch)

On Tuesday, residents of Lagos and Ogun had to endure terrible traffic jams caused by both heavy rain and shortages in fuel, consequently creating long lines of cars waiting at fuel stations.

Many commuters had difficulty getting to their offices and business places, as transporters hike fares between 50-100 per cent.

No fewer than 78 suspected members of Oyo State Park Management System, PMS, have been arrested by the state Police Command over violence.

Items recovered from the suspects during the arrest include guns, 724 live cartridges, 25 cutlasses, seven jack knives, 33 mobile phones, one laptop, charms, two vehicles and over N3 million cash.

Gov Otti freezes state bank accounts, dissolves boards (DailyTrust)

Gov. Alex Otti of Abia has directed the immediate freezing of all the State Government accounts and those of agencies domiciled in banks and other financial institutions in the country.

Otti’s directive is contained in a statement issued in Umuahia on Tuesday by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma.

Ekeoma stated that with the notice, “all banks and other financial institutions in the country are directed to immediately cease from honouring any cheques, documents, instruments or directives of any kind not expressly approved by or emanating from him”. Read more 

PEPC: Obi, LP, Atiku, PDP tender documents in defence of petitions (Sun)

The Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) has admitted in evidence, documents tendered by the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi in defence of his petition against President Bola Tinubu.

The documents which were tendered through the petitioner’s first witness, Mr. Lawrence Nwakaeti, included a United States District Court judgment.

The judgment reportedly indicted Tinubu and ordered his forfeiture of $460,000 in a drug related offence. Read more

Beluga whale, once a suspected Russian spy, appears off Swedish coast (TimesOfIsrael)

Norwegian authorities said Tuesday that a beluga whale, which was first spotted in Arctic Norway four years ago with an apparent Russian-made harness and alleged to have come from a Russian military facility, has been seen off Sweden’s coast nearly 2,000 kilometers (around 1,250 miles) to the south.

“During the last few weeks, it has moved quickly and swam several hundred kilometers” before reaching waters off Sweden’s west coast, Olav Lekve of the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries said.

He said it has been reported off Lysekill, which sits north of Goteborg, Sweden’s second-largest city. There was no immediate comment from Swedish authorities. Read more 

Artificial Intelligence may lead humanity to extinction, industry leaders warn (France24)

Top artificial intelligence (AI) executives including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday joined experts and professors in raising the “risk of extinction from AI”, which they urged policymakers to equate at par with risks posed by pandemics and nuclear war.

“Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” more than 350 signatories wrote in a letter published by the nonprofit Center for AI Safety (CAIS).

As well as Altman, they included the CEOs of AI firms DeepMind and Anthropic, and executives from Microsoft MSFT.O and Google GOOGL.O. Read more

Anthony Martial has been ruled out of the FA Cup final with a hamstring injury. The Manchester United forward has missed 32 matches this season through a number of different setbacks.

His latest issue was picked up in the latter stages of United’s 2-1 final day win over Fulham on Sunday. The Frenchman strained his hamstring with later assessments showing a tear in the muscle.
