The Lagos State Police Command has released the father of 21-year-old student of the University of Lagos, who allegedly stabbed the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, to death.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Hakeem Odumosu, told The PUNCH that the suspect’s father and one Nkechi Mogbo, have been released on bail.

The PUNCH learnt that Chidinma Ojukwu’s father was arrested for hindering his daughter’s arrest at their residence in the Alagomeji area of the state.

Until Chidinma’s arrest, Mogbo had been in police custody after investigation showed that she operated the service apartment where the University of Lagos undergraduate allegedly killed Ataga. Read more

Panic grips residents as oil pipeline leaks in Lagos (Vanguard)

Fear has gripped the residents of Ijeododo Road, Igando, Alimosho, Local Government Area, Lagos, Saturday, following a Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, popularly, called petrol, pipeline leakage in the area.

The incident which occurred in the afternoon when some of the residents noticed the leakage at Igando enroute Ijeododo road and raised the alarm.

Eye witnesses’ account said as soon as the leakage was noticed after the heavy downpour, some of the residents in apparent fear started running helter-skelter.

The Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the development. Read more

UNILAG considers suspension of Super TV CEO’s alleged killer (Punch) 

Authorities of the University of Lagos are considering the suspension of one of its students, Chidinma Ojukwu, who allegedly stabbed the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, to death.

Sources in the university’s Senate, on Friday, said that the student’s action was contrary to the provisions of the institution’s Students Handbook and would be suspended.

A professor at the university, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The PUNCH that “there is no two ways, she will be suspended.”

He added that the suspect would at least be suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation. Read more

Cabotage Fund: NIMASA shortlists 11 coys, 4 banks to benefit –DG (Vanguard)

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, (NIMASA), has disclosed that it had so far shortlisted 11 companies to benefit from the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF).

Dr Bashir Jamoh, Director- General, NIMASA, made this known in a statement made available to newsmen on Saturday, in Lagos.

He noted that following the agency’s advertisement for banks to express interest in the disbursement of the CVFF fund, four primary lending banks had also been shortlisted.

According to him, NIMASA had made presentations to the Ministry of Transportation asking to oversee the four primary lending institutions, as required by law, to come up with guidelines on the disbursement. Read more

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation, JAMB, has issued a new directive to candidates on how to check their 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME results.

The board, in a statement, Saturday,by its Head of Media and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin, said given that the result checking on USSD code 55019 is saddled with some challenges, candidates are henceforth “to visit JAMB portal to check for their 2021 UTME result. “

The terse statement read: “It has come to the attention of the Board that the result checking on USSD code 55019 is saddled with some challenges. Consequently, the Board hereby directs all candidates to visit the JAMB portal to check for their 2021 UTME result. Each candidate is to follow these simple steps.

Ologbo modular refinery ready for production – Gov. Obaseki (Guardian)

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo, says the modular refinery in Ologbo, Ikpoba – Okha Local Government Area (LGA) of the state was ready for production.

Obaseki stated this shortly after he was conducted round the facility by the Managing Director of the refinery, Mr Tim Tian.

“We were in China to sign this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). I am very impressed that work has moved in such a speed in spite of the delay caused by COVID-19 pandemic.

“The plant is ready to receive crude oil; it is ready to process and it is ready to deliver products. They have done the pre – commission with the Department of of Petroleum Resources, they have certified the refinery. Read more

Ondo varsity shut as hoodlums rob, rape students (Punch)

The management of the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, has ordered the closure of the institution for two weeks following the spate of insecurity in the university community.

The development followed a protest embarked upon by the students of university last Thursday.

It was gathered that the students specifically staged the protest to register their displeasure over incessant robberies in their hostels, threats to their lives and properties and rape of the female students by hoodlums, who reportedly from the communities around the university.

A source disclosed no fewer than four female students had been raped by the hoodlums in their various hostels in the last two weeks. Read more

Troops neutralise scores of bandits in Zamfara –Army (Guardian)

The Nigerian Army troops have neutralised scores of bandits in fierce encounter at a Zamfara village, recovering arms and ammunition.

Army image-maker, Brigadier General Nwachukwu who made the disclosure noted that troops of 8 Division Nigerian Army (NA), while on a fighting patrol, came under fire of bandits operating along Mayanchi-Dogo Karfe and Fagantama villages in Talata Marafa Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

“In the fierce encounter that ensued, the bandits were overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the troops. This led to scores of bandits being neutralized. The troops also recovered one PKT riffle, large cache of ammunition, and a motorcycle.

“Relatedly, troops have neutralized 5 bandits in another encounter at Bingi village, in Bungudu LGA of Zamfara. During the gun duel, the bandits withdrew in disarray having sustained severe gunshot wounds. The gallant troops recovered one AK 47 riffle, one Motorcycle and 3 mobile phones from the routed criminals.” Read more

New study shows no risk to sperm from COVID-19 vaccine (Vanguard)

A new study in the US has found there is no risk to a man’s sperm from having any of the currently available COVID-19 vaccines.

The research, carried out at the University of Miami Health System, revealed that men may suffer a slight lowering of their sperm count for a few weeks as a possible side-effect but no more than they would following a viral infection.

“People should not be concerned. The vaccines are very safe,” said Co-author Ranjith Ramasay who had received over 500 emails from concerned men.

Having tracked 45 men aged between 18 and 50, who had received the Moderna, Pzifer vaccine, and the mRNA vaccines, Ramasay concluded that there was no significant decline in their sperm count after 70 days. Read more

Man jumps from plane after trying to access cockpit (BBC)

A man has jumped from a moving plane at Los Angeles International Airport after attempting to access the jet’s cockpit.

The man, who was not identified, opened the plane’s door and fled via the emergency slide on Friday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said.

He was detained on the taxiway and taken to hospital with unspecified injuries.

There has been a rise in incidents on flights in the US. About 3,000 incidents have been recorded this year. Read more

Amsterdam’s well-known tolerance of recreational drugs and sex has long attracted tourists in search of the seedier side to the city of canals and cycle paths.

But when border closures and lockdowns brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic emptied the Dutch capital of all visitors, many locals found the absence of the noisier, intoxicated ones to be a breath of fresh air.

Delighted by the calm atmosphere of their newly deserted historic city center and picturesque waterways, residents reclaimed sections of the city they’d avoided for years. Now they’re not sure they want to give them back.

“Amsterdam needs tourists, without them our wonderful museums and restaurants wouldn’t survive,” says Nicola Theobald, who has lived in the center of the city for 30 years. Read more

Florida building collapse: Report from 2018 warned of ‘major damage’ (BBC)

An inspection in 2018 highlighted “a major error” in the original design of an apartment block that collapsed near Miami, Florida, it has been revealed.

The engineer’s report, which has just been made public, said the fault prevented water draining from the base of the seafront Champlain Towers.

Part of the building collapsed on Thursday while many residents slept.

Hopes are fading for the 159 people still unaccounted for. So far, four deaths have been confirmed. Read more

Moscow approves establishment of logistics centre for Russia fleet in Sudan (MEMO)

The Russian government on Friday ratified an agreement to establish a technical-logistical support point for the Russian fleet in Sudan.

On 1 June, the Sudanese Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Muhammad Othman Al-Hussein announced Khartoum’s intention to renegotiate the agreement signed with Russia regarding the establishment of the logistics centre.

On 23 June, the Russian government handed a decree to President Vladimir Putin to sign. Read more

Cher, Ava DuVernay, more celebrities react to Derek Chauvin’s sentence for George Floyd’s murder (USAToday)

Celebrities are reacting to the sentencing of former Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd. 

On Friday, Chauvin was sentenced to 270 months, or 22.5 years, after he was found guilty for second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The former officer, who is white, was seen on video pinning Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, to the ground with his knee last Memorial Day for over nine minutes.

Cell phone video of the incident went viral, sparking nationwide protests and riots from people calling for an end to police brutality and systemic racism.

Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill said the sentence was not based on “emotion” or “sympathy,” but said “we need to recognize the pain of the Floyd family.” Read more

FDA adds heart inflammation warning to Moderna, Pfizer vaccines (AlJazeera)

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has added a warning about the risk of heart inflammation to fact sheets for Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines.

The warning on Friday noted that reports of adverse events following vaccination – particularly after the second dose – suggest increased risks of myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart muscle, and pericarditis, or inflammation of the tissue surrounding the heart.

The warning update follows an extensive review of information and discussion by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC’s) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices meeting on Wednesday, the FDA said.

At end of the second week of June, more than 1,200 cases of myocarditis or pericarditis have been reported to the US Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System. Read more

Qatari sprinter Abdalelah Haroun killed in car crash in Doha, aged 24 (BBC)

Qatari sprinter Abdalelah Haroun, who won bronze in the 400m at the 2017 World Championships in London, has died in a car crash aged 24.

Qatar Athletics Federation chairman Mohammed Issa al-Fadala said Haroun was killed in an incident in Doha.

Haroun also won silver at the World Indoor Championships in 2016 and gold at the Asian Games in 2018.

“Qatar sports and athletics, on a global level, lost a great hero,” said al-Fadala.

Born in Sudan, Haroun first represented Qatar in 2015. Read more

Maradona’s psychiatrist rejects blame in football legend’s death (AlJazeera)

The psychiatrist who was treating Diego Maradona when he died in November last year has denied any responsibility for his demise, which an expert panel has blamed on neglect.

Psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov “provided evidence that she did not commit a homicide”, her lawyer Vadim Mischanchuk said on Friday after the 36-year-old was questioned at the San Isidro Prosecutor’s Office outside Buenos Aires.

“There is no suspicion to say that the psychiatric medication [that Cosachov prescribed] and in those doses could have caused a deficiency in the heart,” Mischanchuk added.

The 1986 World Cup-winning captain died of a heart attack at the age of 60, weeks after undergoing brain surgery for a blood clot. Read more

Kim Gaucher is a breastfeeding mom. She is also a Canadian basketball player who wants to represent her country at the Tokyo Olympics that start next month.

In an Instagram video she posted this week Gaucher says she can’t do both because “Tokyo has said no friends, no family, no exceptions.”
