N2m scam: Surety turns accused, gets N500,000 bail (NTA)

A man, Musiliu Egbeyemi, 61, who failed to produce his brother, Fatai Egbeyemi, whom he stood surety for, was on Thursday granted a N500,000 bail by an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court in Lagos.

The Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, ordered the accused to provide two sureties as part of the bail condition. Osunsami said the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The accused is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and perversion of justice.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP. Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the accused committed the offences with one other person still at large on June 5 at Elere Police Station, Agege, Lagos. Read more

Applicant in court for allegedly stealing cell phones at `knife point’ (Nation)

A 23-year-old unemployed, Adamu Seidi, who allegedly stole two cell phones valued at N70, 000 at `knife point’ was on Thursday arraigned in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant, whose address was not given, was docked on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The prosecutor, Inspector Raji Akeem, told the court that the offences were committed on Aug. 4, at No.19, Dosumu St., Lagos Island.

Akeem said that the accused and some others at large went to the shop of the complainant, Mrs Ebele Osunkwo, on the guise of buying some goods. Read more

Man in court for impersonating singer, Lara George (Punch)

A 24-year-old computer engineer, Ayodeji Folarin, was on Thursday docked at an Ikeja High Court for impersonating the popular gospel artiste, Lara George, and defrauding three Americans of $8,500 in the process.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Folarin is facing four charges of obtaining money by false pretences and possession of documents containing false pretence.

The charges were preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The computer engineer, who resides at No.2, Folarin St., Obada Oko in Abeokuta, Ogun, however, denied the charges.

Mr. Temitope Banjo, the prosecuting counsel to the EFCC, told the court that the defendant defrauded the foreigners between January and December 2016 in Ikeja, Lagos. Read more

3 men jailed 2 months for stealing alcohol (Vanguard)

An Igbosere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos has sentenced three men to two months imprisonment each for stealing alcoholic beverages, without option of fine.

The men that were sentenced to prison are Leke Falode, 22; Braimoh Clinton, 23, and Anthony Benjamin, 29.

They were arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and theft.

Magistrate A. A. Famobiwo sentenced them to two months imprisonment after finding them guilty of conspiracy and burglary.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Mawari Solomon, during the arraignment, told the court that the convicts conspired with others still at large to commit the alleged offences.

He said they broke the cupboard of one Suliat Adeoye and stole 50 cans of a malt drink valued at N7,500; 100 cans of beer, valued at N15,000, 70 pieces of juice valued at N10,500 and 180 sachets of an alcoholic drink, valued at N18,000.

Solomon said the total amount of all the items is N51,000, property of Adeoye. Read more

Police arraign ‘fake pastor’ for allegedly sexually assaulting woman (Punch)

The police on Thursday arraigned a 32-year-old fake pastor for allegedly raping a woman in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, Micheal Akpan, who resides at 17, Unity Close, Obawole, Iju, a suburb of Lagos is charged with rape.

The Prosecutor, Insp Raji Akeem told the court that the offence was committed on August 17 at the accused’s residence.

Raji said that the accused pretended to be a pastor and told the complainant, a 29-year-old, who was on her way to work, that he had powers to deliver her from satanic oppression. Read more

Applicant docked for allegedly robbing okada rider (Vanguard)

A 23-year-old job applicant, Mohammed Ibrahim, who allegedly robbed a commercial motorcyclist, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on a three-count charge.

Ibrahim, a resident of Ajah, Lagos, was charged with robbing Mr Abdulmimum Isah of a motorcycle, but he pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of assault, robbery and stealing.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 21 at Ajah.

Awase submitted that the accused armed himself with a hammer to rob Isah of the motorcycle worth N218,000. Read more

Barber allegedly defrauds 2 Americans of $23,000 (Punch)

A 27-year-old barber, Wale Kehinde, was on Thursday arraigned at an Ikeja High Court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly defrauding two Americans of $23,000 through romance and lottery scams.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Kehinde, a resident of No. 8, Ogundare Awise Lane, Gbagada, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty to the four counts of obtaining money by false pretences and possession of fraudulent documents.

According to the prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, Mrs. Zainab Ettu, the barber allegedly committed the offences sometime in 2017 in Lagos. Read more

Police arraign fake lawyer for impersonation, fraud (Punch)

A man, Destiny Otubambo, has been arraigned before an Ogba Magistrates’ Court for allegedly impersonating a legal practitioner and fraudulently obtaining mobile phones.

Otubambo was arraigned on five counts of stealing, fraud and impersonation.

It was learnt that the 27-year-old on May 2018 approached a phone retailer at the Ikota Shopping Complex, Lekki, Ajah, Lagos.

It was gathered that he introduced himself as Adeleke, a legal practitioner, and requested a Techno Camon X Pro and iPhone 7plus. Read more

Truck driver in court for allegedly knocking down street hawker (Punch)

A 34-year-old truck driver, Emmanuel Uneke, who allegedly drove in a reckless manner and caused the death of a street hawker was on Thursday charged before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The police arraigned the accused who resides at 29, Odeyale St., Olorunshogo, Ibadan, Oyo State for manslaughter.

The Prosecutor, Insp Raji Akeem told the court that the offence was committed on August 9 at Mangoro area, on the Agege motor road, Lagos.  Read more

NIS arrests 2 suspected fraudsters parading themselves as officers (Nation)

Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Zone A headquarters, Ikeja, Lagos has arrested two suspected fraudsters parading themselves as Immigration Officers.

Assistant Comptroller General, Zonal Coordinator, Mohammed Alhaji Alfa disclosed this on Wednesday.

The suspects; Messrs Emeka John, 66 and James Ezeh, 53 were arrested  on August 20, 2018  by immigration officers at a Chinese company while attempting to defraud  the company of huge sums of money using forged Service letterhead purported to be signed by a senior Immigration officer. Read more
