Surfer dies during shark ‘‘encounter’’ at Hawaii hotspot

A surfer in Hawaii died over the weekend from injuries sustained in a “shark encounter,” authorities said.

Jason Carter, 39, of Haiku, was pulled from the Paia Bay off the beach area of 93 Hana Highway at 11:19 a.m. Saturday, the Maui Police Department said.

Ocean Safety Officers brought Carter to shore via jet ski, and first responders performed lifesaving measures on the beach before the victim was transferred to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he later died, officials explained.

Details on the exact nature of Carter’s injuries were not immediately available.

An investigation into the tragedy – which has been categorized as a “miscellaneous type incident” – remains ongoing.

Maui Police did not immediately respond to a request from The Post for clarification on the specifics of the deadly encounter.

Baldwin Beach Park and Baby Beach, near the scene of Carter’s alleged shark encounter, were closed on Saturday following the incident, the Honolulu Star Advertiser noted.

Shark warning signs were also placed on the beaches one mile on either side of the bay, Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural resources said.

Before moving to Hawaii, Carter worker several seasons at ski resorts in Oregon and Colorado, his Facebook profile showed.

He was remembered by friends on social media as an accomplished outdoorsman.

“A legend was lost yesterday, doing what he loved!” one wrote.

“Oh man. Another amazing friend and an amazing person gone. Jay Carter rest easy my friend,” another added. (NYPost)
