Suspected fake agent docked for allegedly defrauding accommodation seeker (Vanguard)

A 50-year-old suspected fake estate agent, Obatele Olayiwola, who allegedly defrauded an accommodation seeker of N600, 000, on Wednesday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.

Olayiwola who resides at Bariga, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining under false pretense and stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The police alleged that the defendant obtained N600, 000 from one Mrs Jumoke Okoroji, with a promise to secure a bedroom apartment for her but failed. Read more

Unilag patents 11 inventions in 18 months (Guardian)

The University of Lagos says it successfully patented 11 inventions in the last 18 months, with three of them being prototyped.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

Ogundipe spoke about the developmental strides in the university especially in the area of research, and the successes recorded by his administration of two years. Read more

Sanwo-Olu flags-off 1.8km Victoria Island-Oniru road network (Nation)

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu Wednesday flagged off the upgrading of 1.8km Victoria Island-Oniru road meant to ease traffic at that axis.

The project which was conceived and conceptualised four months ago by Planet Projects at the instance of Access Bank Plc, the major partner is being executed through Public Infrastructure Improvement Partnership (PIIP) arrangement.

The project which is expected to be completed in six months is expected to ease traffic linkage and improve travel time around the highly commercial axis of Victoria Island where traffic congestion is reducing productivity and discourages growth of businesses. Read more

Three injured in Lagos gas explosion (Punch)

No fewer than three persons were injured in a gas explosion that occurred at Four Point by Sheraton Hotel, Oniru Victoria Island, Lagos State on Wednesday.

The explosion also affected part of the hotel building and damaged several cars.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said a gas cylinder used by welders working within the hotel premises caused the incident.

LASEMA in a statement said, “On getting to the scene of the incident, a gas cylinder was said to have exploded within the vicinity of the hotel. Read more

Member bags one-year jail term for stealing from church (Nation)

A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, on Wednesday, sentenced a 46-year-old Welder, Chika Azegbu, to one-year imprisonment for breaking-in and stealing property worth N510,000 from a church where he worshipped.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluwatoyin Oghere, sentenced the convict to one-year imprisonment with no option of fine, starting from today (Wedneday).

The convict, who resides on Anthony Village Road in Lagos, was arraigned on Nov. 21 and had pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, breaking-in and stealing. Read more

EFCC storms ‘Yahoo-Boys den’, arrests kingpin, 26 others (Nation)

The Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) Ibadan zonal office, on Wednesday, busted a Lagos hotel believed to be a hideout for internet fraudsters.

The target was one Rasaq Balogun, a suspected internet fraud kingpin, whose illicit activities dominated intelligence gathered from the recently arrested ‘police spies’ during a raid on their Abeokuta base.

According to findings, Balogun harbours an army of young men recruited to carry out financial frauds through the use of the internet.

Some others were also arrested at his Beckley Estate residence, also in Lagos State. Read more

Women entrepreneurs fault stamp duty charges on POS transactions, seek review (Guardian)

The Women’s Research and Documentation Centre (WORDOC), Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan and some women entrepreneurs have faulted government’s decision to withdraw stamp duty charges on transactions from the banking system.

At a conference on Women Entrepreneurs and CBN ‘s N50 POS Charges, held at the University of Ibadan yesterday, Coordinator of WORDOC, Dr. Sharon Adetutu Omotoso, Mrs. Oyenike Adeleke of Ibadan Entrepreneurs Network and Mrs. Collins Deborah Oluyemisi, Oyo State Chairperson of International Federation of Women Lawyers, among others, said the charge was counter productive to Federal Government’s cashless policy. We are 97% ready for FID on Train 7- NLNG (Vanguard)

Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) said on Wednesday it is 97 percent ready to take Final Investment Decision (FID) on its capacity expansion project, the Train 7 project.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, NLNG, Mr. Tony Attah, disclosed this at the ongoing 9th Practical Nigerian Content in Yenagoa.

He said the Train 7 project was expected to expand NLNG’s production capacity by 35 percent from 22 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) to 30 MTPA.

He said:  “The peak construction, the Train 7 project is targeted to provide direct, indirect and induced employment of about 40, 000 jobs from the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), perspective if looked holistically over the next six-year window.” Read more

Attack on Nigerians traders in Ghana, xenophobic – Reps (Punch)

The House of Representatives has condemned the attacks on Nigerian traders in Ghana, saying it is a transfer of aggression by Ghanaians over the closure of Nigeria’s land borders.

The House, at the plenary on Wednesday, urged the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to investigate the attacks.

The House also mandated the Committees on Diaspora Affairs, Foreign Affairs, and Treaties, Protocols and Agreements to “consider and investigate the recent developments among traders in Ghana and ensure that another xenophobia attack on Nigerians is prevented.” Read more

Former Arsenal forward Emmanuel Adebayor has terminated his contract at Turkish Super Lig club Kayserispor, three months after signing as a free agent.

Rwanda and French Football club Paris Saint Germain (PSG) have announced a three-year sponsorship deal.

This is the second partnership deal with a football club following on a three-year deal with Arsenal FC in May 2018. The PSG deal aims at promoting the visibility of Rwandan brands and tourism.

The Paris-based club, that goes by the nickname, Les Parisiens, has of recent years attracted world-class players such as Neymar Jr, Kylian Mbappé and Edinson Cavani. Read more

Former Ondo players disrupt team’s training session over unpaid sign-on fees (Guardian)

Former players of Sunshine Stars, Sunshine Queens, Rising Stars and Rising Queens yesterday in Akure, Ondo State, disrupted the training session of Sunshine Stars FC over the non-payment of their sign-on fees.

The ex-players chased members of the team away from the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure.

Former Sunshine Queens player, Esther Michael, told journalists that she got injured while playing for the club but was abandoned to her fate.

Michael added that she had remained without a job since sustaining a career-threatening injury five years ago, while playing for the club. Read more
