Suspected armed robbers have attacked a 52-year-old man, Olumuyiwa Akinfenwa, in the Egbeda area of Lagos State, torturing him to death.

Our correspondent learnt that Akinfenwa, who lived on Peace Estate, Baruwa in the Ipaja area of the state, was discovered lying in a pool of his blood on Adepeju Street, Egbeda, after the robbery attack.

According to the police, the victim was attacked on June 17 at about midnight by the assailants and the matter was reported at the Shasha Police Division.

A police report obtained by our correspondent, said, “It is a case of suspected murder. One of the residents came to our station and reported that the victim aged 52 years old was beaten up in the night along Adepeju Street by unidentified men. Read more

Lagos seeks stakeholders’ cooperation to address traffic challenges (Guardian)

Lagos State Government has called for stakeholders’ cooperation in its effort at expanding roads to ease traffic and transportation challenges.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, disclosed this during stakeholders engagement on the expansion of three interconnecting roads in Kosofe Local Council namely, Demurin, Agidi and Church Streets.

He said the interaction marked another remarkable stride towards achieving the transportation and traffic management, as well as making Lagos a 21st Century Economy pillars through massive investment in road infrastructure development across the nooks and crannies of Lagos State. Read more

Presidential committee okays Lagos, Abuja Airports for reopening (Guardian)

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, yesterday, okayed both the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, for resumption of local commercial flight operations.

The team, following an inspection tour of the two facilities, expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness for their reopening scheduled to be announced soon.

In a related development, the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has hinted that airlines and other operators in the industry would get the proposed government bailout this week. Read more

Elimination of cervical cancer in Nigeria possible – WHO official (Vanguard)

Dr Olumuyiwa Ojo, an official of the World Health Organisation (WHO), says elimination of cervical cancer, a deadly disease that affects more than 14,000 women annually in Nigeria, is possible.

Cervical cancer causes 8,000 deaths annually due to late presentation at health facilities, making it the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women aged 15 to 44 years in Nigeria.

Ojo said this in a presentation on “Global Call to Action on Elimination of Cervical Cancer as a Public Health Problem’” at a Virtual National Stakeholders’ Forum on the Elimination of Cervical Cancer. Read more

Bandits kill 12 in fresh Zamfara attack (Punch)

Bandits have again killed 12 people in the Unguwar Yabo village of Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

An indigene of the village, Malam Sani Mohammed, informed The PUNCH that, the bandits who were riding several motorcycles trouped to the village and began to shoot at the people indiscriminately.

Mohammed said the bandits spent several hours in the village, shooting and looting the people’s properties.

Apart from the number of people killed, Mohammed also said many people sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries. Read more

COVID -19 Protocol: International air travellers must arrive 5 hours before departure – Minister (Vanguard)

Passengers travelling abroad through Nigeria’s airport terminals are required to arrive five hours before departure to undergo COVID-19 protocols, the Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika, has said.

The minister said this on Saturday at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, when announcing some of the measures introduced for the reopening of the country’s airports closed in March following outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.

Sirika, who led other members of Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 to inspect facilities put in place at the airport ahead of its reopening, said domestic travellers on their part would need to arrive three hours before departure for processing.

According to him, this is in a bid to reduce sources of contamination of the virus. Read more

In Malawi, the leader of the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Lazarus Chakwera, won the country’s historic presidential election rerun, which came after the nullification of last year’s polls that gave President Peter Mutharika his second term.

Chifundo Kachale, chairperson for Malawi Electoral Commission announced the winner Saturday night in Blantyre, amid applause from MCP supporters.

British police charge Reading knife attack suspect with three counts of murder (France24)

UK counter-terrorism police have charged a 25-year-old man with three counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder for a stabbing attack in an English park that killed three men a week ago.

British prosecutors authorized the charges filed Saturday against Khairi Saadallah, of Reading. The attack happened June 20 at Forbury Gardens park in Reading, a town of 200,000 people some 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of London.

The three victims, friends who were identified by police as teacher James Furlong, 36, scientist David Wails, 49, and pharmaceutical worker Joseph Ritchie-Bennett, 39, were enjoying a warm Saturday evening at the park when they were stabbed. The Rolling Stones have warned US President Donald Trump that he could face legal action if he continues using their songs at his campaign rallies.

A statement from the band’s legal team said it was working with the performing rights organisation, the BMI, to stop the unauthorised use of their music.

The Trump campaign used the song ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ at last week’s rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Ex-Super Eagles captain, Vincent Enyeama, has been appointed by French side, Iris Club de Croix, as their goalkeepers’ trainer.
