Swimmers unite to save beached whale pod by pushing them into sea (Metro)

Swimmers, lifeguards and wildlife crews battled to save a pod of disoriented pilot whales after they got into trouble off the Georgia coast.

Footage showed them desperately trying to save the mammals by splashing water on to them and pushing them back into the sea at St. Simons Island on Tuesday.

Several of the whales had come within 50 feet (15 meters) of shore, and some of them tried to beach themselves repeatedly.
