Tanker explosion grounds Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, 2 dead (Punch)

Two persons have been confirmed dead after a diesel-laden tanker crashed and exploded at Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the driver of the truck, with number plate DTM 109 XA, lost control while moving inward Ogun State.

He was said to have crashed the truck against the railings, as the vehicle overturned while its head was detached and fell into a ditch below the bridge.

The head was said to have exploded, killing two of the three occupants. Read more

There was pandemonium in Owode, Yewa South LGA of Ogun State when some men of the Nigerian Army reportedly shot and killed two siblings for allegedly smuggling of foreign rice.

The incident, which happened on Sunday, irked the youth of the area who blocked the Sango-Idiroko highway in protest.

The mob reportedly attacked an officer of the Nigerian Air Force, killing him in retaliation.

Our correspondent gathered that trouble started when the officers accosted the elder brother in an attempt to seize his vehicle loaded with bags of foreign parboiled rice. Read more 

Panic as petrol shortage emerges in Lagos (Vanguard)

There was panic, yesterday, as petrol shortage, characterised by long queues started to emerge in Lagos.

Checks by Vanguard showed that some filling stations, especially independent marketers, did not have the product to sell to motorists and other consumers.

It also indicated that those with commercial stocks increased their prices, ranging between N200 and N250 per litre, depending on location.

The National Operations Controller, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, Mr. Mike Osatuyi, who confirmed the development in a telephone interview with Vanguard, attributed it to unsteady supply in the past few days. Read more 

Lagos PDP guber candidate says he’s undeterred by recent attacks (ThisDay)

Despite an attack on his campaign train last Sunday, the Lagos State  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor) has said he would not be deterred  in his resolve to win the state for the people.

According to Adediran, whose campaign train was attacked  at Mowo area of Badagry, the development  has only spurred him more  in his quest.

The attack which occurred at about 6:30p.m while the team was returning from a visitation to members of the party at Ikoga area, left some journalists and PDP supporters wounded and many vehicles damaged.

Refusing to be intimidated by the attack allegedly sponsored by the loyalists of the ruling  All Progressive Congress (APC), Adediran, whose bullet proof vehicle was also damaged, met with leagues of pastors in Ojo LGA while Funke Akindele continued to visit markets in the area. Read more

Obi’s supporters kick over Obaseki’s comment (Punch)

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has been slammed for saying the supporters of the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will run out of steam in trying to ensure he emerges President in 2023.

The supporters, popularly known as Obidients, took to Twitter after Obaseki stated that they will soon run out of steam.

The governor made the statement during the inauguration of the Edo State Peoples Democratic Party’s Campaign Council in the state on Monday.

He said, “People who say they are Obidients, of course, they will be but they will run out of steam. We know how to manage elections, how many people have been able to do what we are doing? They can’t even form their campaign council not to talk about having a timetable for election, you get it.” Read more

Oshin said this, yesterday, when the management, students, Parent/Teacher Association (PTA) of the school welcomed her with pomp over the 2022 President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Award (PTSEA).

The award was organised by the Federal Ministry of Education to commemorate the World Teachers’ Day in Abuja.

Lagos, GIZ partner on MSME’s growth (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has said its partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit will promote the growth of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Abiola Olowu, disclosed this, according to a statement on Monday, during a meeting of the steering committee comprising various stakeholders in Alausa, Ikeja.

He said, “Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is passionate with his support for businesses in the state and has extended various assistance to the state’s business community, particularly MSMEs in the last three and half years. From my understanding, this partnership focuses on appropriate policy/regulatory framework and provision of infrastructure.

“I want to appreciate GIZ-SEDIN for this laudable initiative and assure you that the administration will partner with all stakeholders to promote industrial cluster development to advance the growth of MSMEs in the state.” Read more

Flood Prevention: Buhari gives Minister 90 days to produce masterplan (Guardian)

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Minister of Water Resources to lead and coordinate with relevant ministries and state governments to develop a Comprehensive Plan of Action for Preventing Flood Disaster in Nigeria.

The President’s media aide, Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement on Monday in Abuja, gave the names of the affected ministries to include environment and transportation. 

Shehu said the president’s directive, which was conveyed to the minister in a letter signed by his Chief of Staff, Prof Ibrahim Gambari, said the plan should be presented to him in 90 days.

According to the presidential aide, President Buhari is regularly receiving updates on the flooding situation in the country. Read more 

Court orders final forfeiture of Diezani’s Abuja homes, cars (Leadership)

Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has ordered the final forfeiture of two Abuja properties and two luxury cars belonging to a former minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, to the federal government.

The two properties located at Plot 1854 Mohammed Mahashir Street, and No. 6, Aso Drive, in the highbrow Asokoro and Maitama Districts of Abuja are valued at $2,674,418USD and N380, 000,000 respectively.

The luxury cars are a black BMW saloon with Chassis No B8CV54V66629 and registered number, RBC155 DH and a black Jaguar saloon car with Chassis No SAJAA.20 GRDMv43376, valued at N36,000,000

Will and Grace star Leslie Jordan has died aged 67 after a car crash.

His representative said the world is a “much darker place” after the tragedy in Los Angeles on Monday.

Mr Jordan, an Emmy-winning actor who also appeared in American Horror Story, saw his popularity increase further in 2021 when he posted videos of himself to Instagram during lockdown.

Henry Cavill confirms he is “back as Superman” for future DC movies (THR)

After years of speculation, Henry Cavill is making it official: He is back as Superman.

The actor shared a video confirming his commitment to play the DC hero in future films after returning for the mid-credits scene in Black Adam, which was released over the weekend and marked his first time in the role since 2017’s Justice League.

“I wanted to make it official — I am back as Superman,” Cavill said in a video. He thanked the fans, “most of all. Thank you for your support and for your patience.” He added that what audiences saw in Black Adam is a “very small taste” of things to come. 

Though there are no writers or director attached, the intention is for Cavill to star in at least one solo Superman movie, his first since 2013’s Man of Steel. Ed Sheeran is currently filming a documentary about his life.

During a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club radio show, the Thinking Out Loud singer revealed that a camera crew has been following him on his Mathematics Tour for a documentary and he’s trying to weigh up what should be included in the project.

“We are shooting a documentary at the minute about my life and there was a big conversation about what we should include,” he shared. “As long as it’s honest and it links in with a theme of something that’s in a song – there is no point in putting something in if it’s detrimental to my life.

“It’s a very fine line, that’s why I live where I live (in Suffolk) and I don’t live in Los Angeles. My life as a celebrity is switched on when it needs to be switched on… but when I go home I am a friend, a dad, a husband, a son. Frank Ocean, Lil Uzi Vert music hacker sentenced to 18 months in prison (Vibe)

Justice has been served as Adrian Kwiatkowski, the man charged with copyright infringement and possessing criminal property after pirating music from artists such as Frank Ocean and Lil Uzi Vert, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison by a British court.

The BBC reports that Chief Crown Prosecutor Joanne Jakymec also stated that Kwiatkowski may have to pay a fine or offer some form of financial restitution.

Kwiatkowski was arrested by the City Of London police in 2019 following an investigation conducted by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. Reportedly, several artist managers stated that music had been stolen from their clients’ cloud accounts by Kwiatkowski’s online persona, Spirdark. The managers also discovered that some of their clients’ music had been sold online.

Kwiatkowski was caught red-handed when authorities found an email address he used to register a cryptocurrency account. They then linked the email to his U.K. home address which was connected with an IP address that was used to hack the cloud accounts where the music was held. Read more

At least 3 dead in St Louis school shooting (BBC)

At least three people, including the suspect, have died and seven others are injured after a shooting at a high school in St Louis, Missouri.

The gunman entered Central Visual & Performing Arts High School shortly after 09:00 local time (13:00 GMT) on Monday.

The doors of the school building were locked and it was not immediately clear how the suspect entered.

Witnesses say lives were saved after the gunman’s weapon jammed mid-attack.

US charges 2 Chinese agents with obstructing Huawei investigation (VOA)

U.S. law enforcement officials on Monday unsealed charges against two Chinese intelligence officers accused of attempting to obstruct the Justice Department’s criminal prosecution of Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies.

The charges are part of three separate criminal cases announced Monday against 13 Chinese nationals, including 10 agents and government officials.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray and other top law enforcement officials announced the charges at a press conference in Washington.

“As these cases demonstrate, the government of China sought to interfere with the rights and freedoms of individuals in the United States and to undermine our judicial system that protects those rights. They did not succeed,” Garland said. Read more

Enoch Tochukwu Nwali was declared most valuable player at the end of the 14th African Scrabble Championship, which Nigeria won to remain the best African country in the sport.

Nwali, a 300 level Health Education student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), dominated his opponents to become the new king of African scrabble at the competition, which ended in Lusaka, Zambia, yesterday.

Nwali achieved his victory on the final day, when he crossed the finishing line ahead of 85 other players from 10 countries.

He secured 25½ wins plus a cumulative of plus 2023 points from 32 games, dropping six games and getting a draw in the four days of competition. Read more 

India 2022: Gusau to lead support for Flamingos against Colombia (Sun)

President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau will be at the forefront of the support group when the country’s U17 girls, Flamingos tackle Colombia in the semi-finals of this year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Goa tomorrow.

The NFF boss, who has spoken with the players and officials severally during their earlier games in the tournament, will physically witness the semi-final showdown at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa. Afghan women’s cycling champ Fariba Hashimi to sign with Israel team (JerusalemPost)

There were emotional scenes on Sunday at the finish line of the Afghan national cycling championship, as sisters Fariba (19) and Yulduz (22) Hashimi finished first and second, respectively.

The championship was held in exile in Switzerland, with such events outlawed by the Taliban.

The sisters had left just days before the Taliban entered Kabul.

Following her victory, Women’s WorldTour team Israel – Premier Tech Roland offered Fariba a contract for the upcoming season, which she happily accepted.
