Tanker Fire: Lagos House to review Traffic Law (Independent)

The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, the state governor, to restrict the movement of long vehicles to between 9 p.m. and early hours of the day. Moving a motion on the matter with reference to the petrol tanker accident that claimed lives and property in the state on Thursday, June 28, Sanai Agunbiade, the House Majority Leader, called for a review of issues surrounding movement of trailers in the state. The motion was moved by 14 members of the House of Assembly. Read more

Badagry backs initiative to boost Economy (ThisDay)

With social and economic growth in mind, Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State has partnered a non government organisation, TOS Education Initiative to flag off the  ‘Bright Future Book Club’  in the area. According to the convener of the initiative, Lolade Salvador, the idea of the club came up to reverse the negative trend in the reading habit of students in this social media era. Salvador noted further that the initiative was in appreciation of what the society through reading had contributed to her making as well as her daughter who was offered Bright Future scholarship in Florida for reading 1,400 books from primary to high school. US Celebrates 242nd Independence in Lagos (Independent)

On Thursday, June 28, it was all fanfare and celebration at the 242nd American Independence Day celebration, which took place at the U.S. Consul General’s Residence in Ikoyi, Lagos. The duo of U.S. Ambassador W. Stuart Symington and Consul General F. John Bray were on hand to host guests in attendance. In attendance were former heads of state and heads of government, members of the diplomatic corps, business, political, and traditional leaders, serving and former state governors, senior government officials, Nollywood celebrities, senior media executives, civil society representatives, leaders in academia, and other friends of America. Hope for life initiative celebrates, empowers widows in Lagos (Independent)

No fewer than 300 widows have been empowered by Hope for Life Initiative, a non-government organisation that takes care of widows and children in the state. The empowerment programme was done in conjunction with Lipton as part of activities to celebrate this year’s International Widows Day which took place at Ai Royal event centre in Ikorodu. Kendi Aig-Imoru, Executive Director of the NGO while speaking with Saturday Independent said that the programme was put together in conjunction with Lipton to empower the women to be able to do something for themselves after the death of their husbands. MMIA police command prosecutes 104 in 6 months (Guardian)

The Lagos Airport Police Command on Friday said that no fewer than 102 persons were charged to court for committing various offences at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos between January and June 2018. The spokesman for the command, DSP Joseph Alabi, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. NAN reports that some of the suspects were charged with assault, stealing, obtaining by false pretenses as well as unlawful entry and touting. The offences, according to Alabi, contravene the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) bye Laws. Read more

2,500 Lagos Private Schools Undertake Unified Examination (Independent)

About 2,500 private schools in Lagos State are participating in the newly introduced unified examination by the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS). Mr Wasiu Adumadeyin, the President of Lagos chapter of NAPPS, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the examination was to ensure maintenance of high standard of education by such schools. He said the examination questions were set by professionals in different subjects,in line with the curriculum of the schools. Read more

Rotary Club of Lagos lifts Ita Marun community again (Guardian)

People of Ita Marun community, a sleepy village in Ibeju Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, were exuberant as Rotary Club of Lagos presented cheques for a micro-credit scheme approved by the club to some of the villagers in order to establish or grow their businesses. The cheques were presented by Outgoing President of the Club, Rotarian Soboma Ajumogobia. Rotary Club of Lagos’s relationship with this community, which started almost four years ago, has been a source of happiness to the entire community. Projects the Club has carried out for the community include an industrial bore-hole supplying pipe-borne water to all parts of the village, a solar powered street lighting system, a palm kernel crushing plant, an incinerator and most significantly the revolving micro-credit scheme. Lagos Govt. out to address problems facing Widows, says Adebule (Independent)

The Lagos State Government on Friday said it was committed to implementing programmes to alleviate the deprivation, denial of rights, social and economic neglect experienced by vulnerable widows and their children in the state. The Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule said this at an Empowerment Seminar for Widows to mark International Widows’ Day, organised by the state ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), in Lagos. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that International Widows’ Day was declared by the United Nations in 2011 and is commemorated every June 23 in an effort to empower widows and help them regain their rights, which have long been ignored and violated. Barber who set self-ablaze on Lagos road dies (Punch)

A barber has taken his own life after setting himself ablaze on a road leading to Omole Estate, near Akiode Bus Stop, Lagos. He died while he was receiving treatment at a hospital. The barber had reportedly emerged on the road around 4:30pm on Wednesday holding a five-litre jerrycan of petrol. He subsequently poured the fuel on his body; struck a match and lit himself. Our correspondent learnt that a passerby, who was standing a few metres away from the scene, rushed to put out the fire. Read more
