Tears as 17-year-old dies of electrocution in Lagos (Guardian)

It was a shattered dream for Funmilayo Oseni, as hope of seeing her son, Fawaz Oseni, fulfill his destiny was dashed. The 17-year-old boy was electrocuted on May 26, 2023.

Oseni, a resident of Lawal Street, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, was playing football at No.8 Lawal Close, in front of Leeland Schools, Oregun, when the ball fell on the roof of the house.

The SSS 3 student attempted to retrieve the ball but was electrocuted. The Guardian learnt Oseni alongside another boy went for the mission, but his colleague was lucky to survive the incident. Read more 

Policeman in court for defrauding businessman of N128m (Punch)

A Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jerry Ogunsakin, was on Thursday arraigned before the Federal High Court, in Lagos for alleged unlawful conversion of N128m.

The defendant is facing three counts of conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence and unlawful conversion preferred against him by the Special Fraud Unit.

The police prosecutor, Chukwu Agwu, told Justice Chukwuejekwu Aneke that the defendant committed the offences on November 15, 2022. Read more

A coalition of youth and women groups with core interest in development strategies and accountability, Generation Next Collective (GNC), has described the controversy trailing inauguration of Nigeria Air and opposition by private operators as unhealthy, selfish and unpatriotic.

The national carrier has witnessed criticisms from Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), spearheaded by Dr. Obiora Okonkwo, who doubles as founder of United Nigeria Airline, one of the private players in the country.

Okonkwo and other indigenous operators have accused former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, who initiated the move, of a plot to kill indigenous operators and handover monopoly to Ethiopian Airlines, a major partner of the national airline. Read more 

Sanwo-Olu frees 49 inmates (Punch)

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on the recommendation of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, has approved the release of 49 inmates from various correctional facilities across the state.

According to a Thursday statement, Sanwo-Olu signed the Release Order on May 26, 2023.

The statement said the move was part of activities to usher in the second term of the governor in office. Read more

RTEAN To NLC, TUC: We have not been banned, we are fully functional in Lagos (Independent)

The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) on Thursday told the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), that its activities have been banned by the Lagos State government.

The Union also told the NLC and TUC that it is fully operational in the state.

NLC and TUC had written to the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, threatening to mobilise its members for industrial action, if it fails to obey court order and remove all the barricades and armed policemen stationed at the offices of RTEAN by May 30. Read more

Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mele Kyari, said yesterday that the present high cost of petrol will crash in no distant time, allaying the fears of Nigerians about the development.

US judge approves “Rust” producers’ settlement with family of Halyna Hutchins (Standard)

A US judge has approved a settlement agreement for the family of Halyna Hutchins, following the “Rust” cinematographer’s death.

Lawyers representing Ms Hutchins’ husband Matthew and their son Andros sued actor Alec Baldwin and the film’s producers for wrongful death in February 2022.

Ms Hutchins was killed on the set of the movie in October 2021 after a prop gun Baldwin was holding was discharged. Read more

Glenn Farr dies: Oscar-winning Editor on The Right Stuff was 77 (Deadline)

Glenn Farr, whose work on The Right Stuff won the 1984 Academy Award for editing, died May 25 at Cedars Sinai from complications from a brain tumor, according to several friends’ Facebook posts. He was 77.

Farr brought his touch to Philip Kaufman’s The Right Stuff. He shared the win with fellow editors Lisa Fruchtman, Tom Rolf, Stephen A. Rotter and Douglas Stewart.

“This is truly a beautiful, wonderful moment for each one of us,” Farr said in his Oscar acceptance speech. “We are privileged to be a part of it and the experience will long live in our hearts. We must thank our marvelous, beautiful director — we love you Phil Kaufman — for his leadership and dedication and the vision he gave to us.” Farr also offered a thank you to all assistant and contributing editors that worked on the film. President Joe Biden tripped and fell after handing out the last diploma at a graduation ceremony at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado on Thursday, but got up quickly and walked back to his seat.

The 80-year-old U.S. president fell forward, caught himself with his hands, then got up on one knee while helped by three people. He walked back to his seat unassisted.

After Biden was helped up, he pointed behind him, seeming to indicate that he had tripped over a sandbag used to hold the teleprompter in place. He mingled with other officials afterward, smiling and giving a “thumbs up” sign. Read more 

Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis hints at future for the show after season three finale (Mirror)

Jason Sudeikis has announced that the “story is done” for Apple TV’s sports comedy, Ted Lasso.

The 47-year-old plays the loveable football coach in the series and has previously hinted at the ultimate end for the show being at the end of season three despite there being no definitive plot.

Nigeria on Wednesday defeated Benin Republic 3-0 to book a date with perennial rivals, Ghana, in the final of the maiden WAFU B U-20 Girls Cup of Nations holding in Kumasi, Ghana. To qualify for the final, Ghana’s Black Princesses beat Burkina Faso 3-1 in the second semifinals.

Nigeria topped Group A of the competition, which also had Burkina Faso, Togo and Niger Republic, while Ghana led Group A comprising Benin Republic and Cote d’Ivoire.

The Final will hold tomorrow at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Kumasi. In the semifinal against Benin Republic, Nigeria took control of the game after an initial spell of Benin dominance.
