Teenager remanded for alleged armed robbery in Lagos

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Thursday remanded an 18-year-old male, Mohammed Lawal, Ikoyi Custodial Centre, Lagos, for allegedly robbing a man of his car with a pistol.

Lawal is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

His plea was, however, not taken.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.A Layinka, ordered that the defendant be kept at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre, pending legal advice from the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Layinka adjourned the case until June 28, 2022 for DPP advice.

Earlier, Police Prosecutor, Insp. Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the defendant committed the offences at 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 at Akinyemi Street, Igando, Lagos. Read more

1 dies during attack on JAMB officials in Lagos hotel (Punch)

A gateman with Mabila Hotel in Ikorodu, Lagos State, was killed in the early hours of Wednesday by some gunmen who robbed some officials of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board that lodged there.

The Police spokesman for Lagos Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria.

He said that the JAMB officials had been relocated to a safe place.

The PPRO said, “One Prof. Odunsi, an official of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board who lodged at the hotel was robbed of his two phones, one HP Laptop and N20,000 cash. Read more

Police arrest suspect over killing of Lagos park chairman (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command, on Tuesday, said it arrested the alleged killer of the Chairman of the Ojodu-Berger Okada Riders Association, Mr Alaba Williams.

The command spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday.

He said, “The alleged killer of Mr Alaba William, Chairman of the Ojodu-Berger Okada Riders Association, is in our custody.

“Investigation into the case has commenced immediately. Peace has returned to the place. Some patrol teams have been deployed in the area to ensure peace.” Read more

Court remands man, 36, over alleged murder of girlfriend (Guardian)

An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered the remand of Mr Hanson Pepple for the alleged murder of his girlfriend and dismembering her body.

The defendant, 36, who appeared in court on a charge of murder, is to remain at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre for the next 30 days pending the receipt of legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs).

Pepple’s plea was not taken.

The prosecutor, Insp. Orobosa Osagiede told the court that the defendant had committed the offence on Oct. 10, 2021, at No. 38, Alhaji Jimoh St., Adelaide Jones, Ikeja.

He alleged that the defendant had attacked and dismembered the body of an unknown female alleged to be his girlfriend with a machete and put her body in a sack. Read more

Police arrest suspected motorcycle thieves in Lagos (Guardian)

Operatives of Lagos Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested 25-year-old Ayo Taiwo and 21-year-old Jude Prince Ovat for stealing a motorcycle, while Daniel Chibuike is at large.

The suspects were arrested on May 8 and a motorcycle was recovered from them in Park View Estate, Ikoyi area of Lagos.

The suspects were arrested after they dispossessed a motorcyclist of his motorcycle.

Lagos Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin,  who confirmed the arrest yesterday, said Ovat and Daniel boarded the motorcycle from Obalande to Parkview Estate, where Taiwo was waiting for them. Read more

Bamise: BRT operation manager narrates how Ominnikoron ran away (Guardian)

Justice Sherifat Sonaike of a Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), was yesterday, told how the driver of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Andrew Ominnikoron, ran away after they heard about the rape and murder of a 22- year -old fashion designer, Bamise Ayanwole.

The prosecution witness, Kayode Aluko, the Fleet Operational Manager of the BRT, narrated this at the ongoing trial of Omininikoron for kidnapping, rape and murder. 

Aluko said the defendant never reported the three rape incidents and the murder of Ayanwole, until February 28, after the deceased family reported the case to them. 

Led-in-evidence by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Dr. Babajide Martins, the witness said, he had given an instruction to his officers, who received the information of the incident, that when the defendant comes, he should see him (Aluko) for interrogation over a missing person. Lagos task force nabs impostor, driver for biting off officer’s finger (Guardian)

Operatives of the Lagos State task force have arrested a suspected imposter, who specialises in snatching motorcycles and impersonating officials of the agency with his camouflage trousers and wallet.

The 33-year-old suspect, Elias Marcus, and the father of one were arrested while trying to carry out his usual act of impersonating an official and stealing a rider’s motorcycle.

Spokesperson for the agency, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, said the suspect had flagged down a 19-year-old victim, Yahaya Usman, around Mafoluku, asking him to take him to the inner parts of Oshodi.

On getting to the destination, he said, the suspect asked the rider to divert to a different location where he pushed him off the bike and sped off with it. Read more

Brazil returnee, 2 pregnant women, arrested for drug trafficking at Lagos airport (NewTelegraph)

Two pregnant women have been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, for attempting to import and export illicit drugs through the airport last week.

The suspects identified as Mrs. Seun Babatunde and Mrs Gloria Asibor were both arrested at the Airport while trying to export drugs to different countries before they were apprehended.

In a statement yesterday by the agency’s spokesperson, Mr. Femi Babafemi said the first to enter the Agency’s dragnet is a Brazilian returnee, Nworie Chikwendu who was arrested on Tuesday May 3, during an inward clearance of passengers on Qatar Airways flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil enroute Doha to Lagos. Babafemi said during a thorough search of his luggage, two parcels of cocaine were discovered concealed in a pair of brown slippers hidden in his oxblood backpack.

A further search of the pair of black slippers worn by the suspect also led to the recovery of additional two parcels of cocaine built into the soles of his foot wears, bringing the total to four parcels weighing    800grams. When undergoing a preliminary interview, Chiwendu, who claimed to be a barber in Sao Paulo, said he came to Nigeria for the burial of his father. Read more
