The New Yorker dances to the Lagos beat

Foremost American magazine The New Yorker has published a piece titled Beats Generation: The Nigerian musicians who are changing the sound of global pop on its September 24, 2018 issue. Listed amongst the credits for the piece are two Nigerians: music journalist Joey Akan (co-producer) and make-up artist Temitope Onayemi.

Beats Generation: The Nigerian musicians who are changing the sound of global pop is a literal and textual snapshot on Nigerian musicians who are pushing the envelope by fostering new sounds from the old and bringing the world’s attention to their diverse brands of music.

Spearheading the names of artistes highlighted in the piece is Tuface aka 2Baba, whose music is described as possessing “a knack for drawing together far-flung influences to create songs that seem plainspoken and homegrown.” Given his unarguable status as a major influence to the direction the Nigerian music industry is headed, 2Baba is rightly ascribed to be the trailblazer who has shown younger artistes that “the sound of Lagos can—in fact, should—echo across the globe.”

Other artistes featured in the piece are Adekunle Gold, Davido, Skales, Simi, Falana, Seyi Shay, Niniola, Maka and Mars & Barzini.
