This week we present you a snapshot of the security situation across Nigeria from Nov. 5 to Nov. 10, 2018 in collaboration with our security partners, PR24 Risk Management Consulting.
We focus on Violent Crimes, Civil Unrests, Robbery, Kidnapping, Insurgency, Militancy, Disasters, etc.
(Medium-High Risk)
Diverse kinds of violent crimes headlined insecurity in the southwest even as Road Traffic Accident (RTAs) appeared to be prominent, particularly in Lagos State where three significant cases of fatal road crashes were recorded. In addition, notable incidences of robbery, kidnap and boat mishap was recorded during the week.
Highlight: Hoodlums took over the Ondo State House of Assembly on November 9, following the removal of the Speaker and his Deputy. The hoodlums humiliated lawmakers, staffs and journalists in spite of the heavy presence of security personnel.
Advisory
Personal alertness and environmental consciousness are of the essence in the southwest as unsuspecting individuals are liable to a crime of opportunity and certain level of organised crimes. RTAs are also becoming a common feature and threaten both inter and intra city travels. Commuters and other road users are advised to be cautious and careful. In particular, travellers along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and the Ilesha-Akure highway are enjoined to avoid speeding as the roads are under repair and also serve as major routes for heavy-duty vehicles and trucks.
South-South/East
(Medium-High Risk)
Violent crimes, robbery, kidnapping, civil unrest and disaster all undermine safety in the region. Also
calling for urgent attention is the protest by ex-militants under the Federal Government amnesty programme over what they have tagged the deliberate attempt to snatch pipeline surveillance jobs from them. This could give rise to an imminent risk if adequate precautions are not taken.
Highlight: Gunmen on November 6, abducted four Catholic priests between Agbor and Umutu in Ukwani Local Government Area of Delta State. The priests were on their way to Edo State for an alumni meeting when they were kidnapped by the gunmen.

Violent crimes, kidnap and robberies remain prominent in the region. Both political and community-led protests and agitations are also common place and could yet increase, especially in the southeast with the election year drawing closer. Travellers along the Abraka route are enjoined to be cautious as the route is susceptible to kidnapping. All forms of travel can also be challenging, caution is therefore of utmost importance. With the perceived increase in RTAs in the region, commuters and other road users are advised to be cautious.
(Medium-High Risk)
In the region, violent crimes, RTAs, and kidnapping remained prominent with Benue State experiencing a surge in both. Member of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, under the umbrella body of Shiites, released the names of 34 members allegedly killed by security agencies during last week’s violence which rocked the nation’s capital, Abuja.
Highlight: On November 6, troops of the Operation Whirl Stroke of the north-central were ambushed in Benue State. A captain and other officers were critically wounded in the ambush.
Advisory
Plateau, Kogi and Benue states are still considered as volatile areas. While the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, may continue to witness civil unrest and protests. Security conditions here are fluid and can change rapidly. Be cautious and monitor local media on breaking events and latest happenings. A robust, context-based security programme is advised, and all road trips should be with utmost caution.
Northwest
(Medium-High Risk)
Although normalcy has returned to Kaduna metropolis, the state is still at a crossroads and a radical approach would be required to maintain peace and also end the orgy of ethnoreligious violence. Worrisome also is the report that 30 cases of kidnapping were recorded under one month in Zamfara State. In Kano State, the kidnap of a Lebanese national in the Tudun Wada area also made headlines.
Highlight: The Department of State Security Services (DSS) on November 7 arrested the six suspected kidnappers of the traditional ruler of Adara Chiefdom in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Chief Maiwada Galadima.
Advisory
Residents and travellers in the Kaduna metropolis are advised to be vigilant as security conditions can change abruptly. Monitor local media and stay abreast with breaking news and information. Across other states in the region, road travel is still threatened and other conditions suggest a worsening case of transnational crime. A robust, context-based security programme is advised and all road trips should be with caution. Also, we strongly advise against night trips across the region.
Northeast
(High-Extreme Risk)
Insurgents continue to wreak havoc in some parts of the northeast. Borno and Yobe states came under the spotlight as the terror sect attacked katarko community just 3km away from Maiduguri and attacked a base of the Nigerian Army belonging to the 120 Battalion. The terror sect also attacked a military base in Kukawa in the Lake Chad region. However, the Nigeria troops reportedly cleared Boko Haram insurgents from seven villages in Borno.
Highlight: Boko Haram insurgents invaded Katarko community in the Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, Kukuwa in Borno State, and also attacked a base of the Nigerian Army belonging to the 120 Battalion.
