In a heartwarming celebration spanning three days, the distinguished 1983 set of Anglican Grammar School, Iju-Itaogbolu, commemorated their 40th anniversary. The festivities, held from Thursday, 16th November to Saturday, 18th November 2023, unfolded across the hallowed grounds of their alma mater and the esteemed Events Hall of Solton Hotel, Ijapo, Akure.
The anniversary witnessed a global reunion, with alumni traveling from different corners of the country and even abroad. Notable attendees included Mr. Apata Olaniyi and Prince Dare Adeleye, journeying from the United Kingdom to honor the occasion. Mr. Apata’s presence, despite having left the set in Form 2, underscored the enduring bonds that transcend time and distance.
The celebration kicked off with a joyous convergence on Thursday, setting the stage for a trip down memory lane on Friday. Accompanied by esteemed former teachers, Mrs. Aluko and Mr. Ogedengbe, the group embarked on a nostalgic journey to their alma mater aboard a chartered coaster bus. The school reception was nothing short of spectacular, with cheers and jubilation echoing from the gate to the chapel.
The anniversary committee chairman, Mr. Akinyemi Akinyinka, orchestrated a heartfelt Thanksgiving service within the chapel’s hall on Friday. The principal, Mrs. Daramola Oludolapo Ayonike, praised the ’83 set as the epitome of excellence, declaring it the best reunion in the school’s history. Mrs. Ayonike seized the moment to seek alumni support for the reconstruction of the school hall, repair of classroom blocks, and the establishment of a millennial library.
The spirit of giving back prevailed as the association, led by President Prof. Falegan, pledged to contribute to the construction of a library. Customized exercise books were presented to students and teachers, and a sumptuous lunch generously sponsored by colleagues from Iju added to the festivities.
The evening’s highlights in Akure included a lecture on national security and a delightful dinner. On Saturday, the intellectual discourse continued with a lecture on post-retirement life, delivered by Prof. Falegan C. Rotimi. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) ushered in a new era, with the election of dynamic executives to lead the association forward.
President Mr. Segun Adeleye outlined objectives focusing on member welfare, assistance to peers, and alma mater infrastructure enhancement. The newly elected executives took the oath of office, sealing their commitment to serve diligently.
The celebration concluded with a Dinner party, presided over by Mr. Gbenga Olaniyi, who shared valuable recommendations. Newly elected President Mr. Segun Adeleye emphasized the continuation of the legacy, calling for collective efforts to achieve shared goals.
As attendees departed, they left behind a legacy of unity, success, and commitment, marking the 1983 set of Anglican Grammar School, Iju-Itaogbolu, as a beacon of enduring camaraderie.
