Rights group holds rallies for Ambode’s re-election (Guardian)

A group, Human and Consumer Rights Advocacy Centre (HACRAC), has organised rallies in parts of Lagos to back Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s re-election.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the group marched on Ojota, Ogba, Berger and Iyana Ipaja chanting solidarity songs in support of the governor.

The rallies come against the backdrop that Ambode had allegedly fallen out of favour with his political godfather and All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Read more

ICPC stops investigation into Adeosun’s certificate forgery (Punch)

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission said on Monday that it had stopped investigations into the use of a forged exemption certificate of the National Youth Service Corps by a former Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun.

The ICPC stated this just as the NYSC said it had concluded its investigative report on the matter and submitted it to the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, its supervising ministry. Read more

2019: PDP panel grills Atiku, Saraki, Makarfi, others Thursday (Punch)

The Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees panel set up to discuss the possibility of having a consensus presidential candidate among the aspirants will meet with them  (the aspirants) and also screen them on Thursday, The PUNCH has learnt.

Senate to convene emergency session over 2019 polls (Guardian)

The Senate is to reconvene before its September 25 resumption day to debate the 2019 general elections and related matters, according to the Deputy Majority Leader, Bala Ibn Na Allah.

He told reporters yesterday in Birnin Kebbi that “for the smooth forthcoming 2019 elections, we want to make sure that the exercise is conducted in a free and fair manner nationwide. That is one of the reasons why we must reconvene.” Read more

CBN steps up distribution of lower denominations (Guardian)

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has stepped up the campaign to rid the country of dirty notes, make lower denominations available and stem the tide of racketeering in new notes, as it approved a disbursement to traders at the Tejuosho Ultra-modern Market, in Lagos.

The lower denominations approved by the management of CBN for the disbursement include N200, N100, N50, N20, N10 and N5 denominations to economic agents.’ Read more

THE lawmaker representing Rivers South East in the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Abe, has declared that nobody can deny him the right to contest for the governorship position of Rivers State.

Court fines DPO N10m for lawyer’s unlawful detention (Guardian)

Justice George Omereji of Rivers State High Court, Port Harcourt has ordered the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Eneka Police Division, CSP Yahaya Bello-Sam, to pay N10 million to a senior lawyer, Mr. Afolabi Olabisi, for violation of his fundamental rights.

The trial judge held that the police officer failed to prove that the lawyer committed any crime before being detained, adding that the DPO’s action was oppressive.

He ruled that the officer’s action was in flagrant violation of the law. Read more

We are seeing more patients with hypertension in Lagos, doctors lament (Vanguard)

Medical doctors in Lagos have raised the alarm over rising cases of High Blood Pressure and other hypertensive disorders among patients presenting at many clinics in the state in recent times.

 The doctors, under the auspices of the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria, AGPMPN, Lagos State Chapter, who disclosed this to pressmen said several of the cases are as a result of stress caused by the effects of the series of incessant road traffic jams across the state. Read more

Nigerian Army not fair to me, says ex-Olympian, Obisia Nwankpa (Guardian)

One of Nigeria’s most celebrated boxers, Obisia Nwankpa has accused the Nigerian Army, which he represented as an athlete, of frustrating his life by allegedly refusing to pay his pension over the past 15 years.

Nwankpa was one of the world’s most popular boxers in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Narrating his ordeal in the hands of his former employers, Nwankpa told The Guardian at the weekend: “I am a product of the Nigerian Army (63, NA359769 SSG), and I won so many medals for them as a boxer. Read more
