Tinubu didn’t approve tenure extension for IGP – Police (Channels)

President Bola Tinubu did not extend the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

This is according to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) which said instead, the President gave his approval to the law governing the tenure of the office as required.

In a statement on Friday, Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the IGP’s appointment is for four years. Read more

EFCC hands over recovered $180,300, 53 vehicles to Canadian Police (Leadership)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has handed over a total of $180, 300 to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on behalf of the victims of financial crimes in Canada.

The EFCC also handed over 53 vehicles stolen in Canada, moved to Nigeria and recovered all over Nigeria.

While handing over the recoveries, the Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukayode said out of the $180, 300 US Dollars, the sum of $164, 000 was stolen from a Canadian Elena Bogomas in a romance scam, while $16,300 Dollars was stolen from Sandra Butler. Read more 

FUNAAB grieves over Christianah’s abduction, killing (Punch)

The management of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, has mourned the death of the 300-level student of Pure and Applied Botany of the university, Christianah Idowu, saying that her abduction and senseless murder in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has left the entire university broken-hearted.

The university conveyed this condolence message in a statement made available to journalists on Friday and signed by Olasunkanmi Olajide, acting Head, Directorate of Public Relations of the institution.

The university said that the news of the abduction and subsequent killing of Idowu had brought the school great pain and untold sorrow. Read more

Tinubu defends petrol price hike, says hard decisions must be taken (DailyTrust)

President Bola Tinubu has reacted to the recent hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol.

Daily Trust reports that the newest hike, implemented by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company’s (NNPCL) Retail Management, range from N855 to N897 per litre, depending on the location, from the previous N568-N617.

Independent marketers have adjusted their prices to between N930 and N1,200 per litre of petrol. Read more

Lagos community protests against unlawful demolition of buildings (Nation) 

Indigenes and residents of the Odo-Ogun community in the Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State have protested against the illegal demolition of their ancestral homes and buildings.

A communiqué issued at the end of a meeting held on Friday urged the state government to intervene to prevent mayhem in the community.

The communiqué read in part: ”Unfortunately, some officials of the state government colluded with one Onikoro Family to perpetrate illegality to execute a fake judgment of 1936 that is being contested in courts. Read more

The designer of the Nigerian flag, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, has been laid to rest after a year-long wait for a promised state funeral.

At least 17 students killed in Kenya boarding school fire (AlJazeera)

A fire ripped through the dormitory of a boarding school in central Kenya, killing 17 boys who were sleeping and injuring 14 others, police and government officials said.

The death toll could rise, police warned on Friday, following the disaster at Hillside Endarasha Primary School in Nyeri county, as the survivors are being treated in numerous hospitals.

Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura said the boys were in grades 4 to 8, putting their ages at about nine to 13 years. The dormitory housed 156 boys. Read more

A woman who claims to have been locked in a barn and kept as a sex slave for four years had all her teeth and lips removed in ‘cruel experiments by Poland’s Josef Fritzl’.

The woman, who has been identified by her first name Malgorzata, is alleged to have been held captive for four years in a barn near Glogow, Poland.

She revealed her ordeal to doctors after she arrived at hospital to be treated for a dislocated shoulder. Read more

A pair of YouTubers broke a Guinness World Record by constructing a scaled-up iPhone 15 Pro Max measuring 6.74 feet tall.

Tech reviewer Mrwhosetheboss, aka Arun Maini, enlisted the help of gadget-building specialist DIYPerks, aka Matthew Perks, to build the world’s largest smartphone replica.

Maini said he wanted to create a giant iPhone to celebrate the milestone of his YouTube follower count surpassing that of the official Apple account. Read more

Indie band English Teacher win Mercury Prize (BBC)

Indie band English Teacher have won the Mercury Prize for their debut album This Could Be Texas.

The quartet, who formed while studying at the Leeds Conservatoire in 2020, are the first act from outside London to win the prize since Young Fathers in 2014.

Judges said their album stood out “for its originality and character” and displayed a “fresh approach to the traditional guitar band format”. Read more

A Grammy-winning Brazilian musician who worked with the Black Eyed Peas, Stevie Wonder and Justin Timberlake has died after months of battling long COVID.

Sergio Mendes, who introduced international audiences to Brazilian music genre bossa nova, died at the age of 83 in Los Angeles.

“His wife and musical partner for the past 54 years, Gracinha Leporace Mendes, was by his side, as were his loving children,” his family said in a statement. Read more

Charles LeClerc has been filmed hitting another vehicle in his £303,000 ($400,000) Ferrari road car, just days after claiming victory at the Italian Grand Prix.

LeClerc had held off a strong challenge from Oscar Piastri in Monza, adopting a one-stop strategy as he beat the MacLaren driver by 2.6 seconds in what was his second win of 2024.

Jannik Sinner downs ailing Draper to reach US Open final (RNZ)

Italian top seed Jannik Sinner took down ailing Briton Jack Draper 7-5 7-6(3) 6-2 to reach the US Open final, overcoming muggy conditions at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Sinner appeared to have suffered a wrist injury when he fell over in the second set but rallied to reach his second major final after winning the Australian Open earlier this year.
