Tinubu orders further austerity measures, caps official convoys

President Bola Tinubu has issued new directives limiting the size of official convoys and security details for federal officials in a sweeping move to reduce government spending, according to a State House statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy.

The directive restricts Ministers, Ministers of State, and Agency Heads to a maximum of three vehicles in their official convoys and caps their security personnel at five – four police officers and one DSS officer.

“These new measures are to be implemented immediately,” Onanuga stated, highlighting the administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.

This latest directive follows January’s cost-cutting measures, which saw the president reduce his foreign trip entourage from 50 to 20 officials, while local trips were capped at 25 officials. The Vice President’s delegation was similarly streamlined to five officials for foreign trips and 15 for domestic travel.

The National Security Adviser has been tasked with reviewing and recommending appropriate reductions in vehicle and security personnel deployment across military, paramilitary and security agencies.
