‘No-Remembrance Day’
The 13th petitioners’ witness, Audu Sani, told the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal that he could not remember the date of the last presidential election. Sani, who was the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) collation agent in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State for the presidential election, had alleged that there were incessant incidents of thuggery and sporadic shootings in many parts of the area, preventing and disrupting voting.
The witness appeared before the five-man panel led by Justice Garba Usman, to testify at the instance of the PDP, and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who are challenging the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari at the February 23 poll.
Asked by the All Progressives Congress’ lawyer, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), when he submitted the results, he said he did on “the 26th”. Asked which month, he said “April 26”. Asked when did the election hold he said “23rd”. When asked to mention the month, he said, “I cannot remember.”

An Ilorin Magistrates’ Court has ordered that a fashion designer, Dauda Azeez, be given 12 strokes of the cane for stealing 16 used female underwear. Magistrate Afusat Alege, gave the order after Azeez pleaded guilty to theft.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Cpl. Abubakar Isa, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 2 at Oke-Kobi area, Chikanda. Isa said some residents of Oke-Kobi reported the case to the police.
The prosecutor said that when Azeez’s room was searched, 16 used female underwear were recovered. He said that investigation revealed that the defendant was in the habit of stealing used pants with the motive of sniffing them.

Lions and Lionesses, a proud den makes
It was excitement galore at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) yesterday as the institution’s Engineering Faculty successfully unveiled its first five-seater electric car. Christened Lion Ozumba 551, the car, made with 80 per cent locally-sourced materials, has a 30-kilometre range when fully charged.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Charles Igwe, said the car was part of the drive to accord innovation and technology the highest attention to reposition the institution for greater heights. He commended the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Professor Benjamin Ozumba, who he said laid the foundation for innovation and technology upon which the car dream was realised.
Responding, Ozumba said, “When I came on board, I said we need innovation and technology to be at par with China, United States, Sweden and other developed countries of the world. That was why I provided the resources and encouragement for innovation and technology, because I believe that is one of the ways we can improve our country’s economy.”

VAR: Coming to AFCON very soon
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be introduced from the quarter-final stage of the Africa Cup of Nations, increasing the possibility of drama in a tournament traditionally filled with refereeing controversy but this year rather muted. It was originally planned to use VAR from the semi-final stage but it will now be brought in from the last eight games.
CAF president Ahmad Ahmad said not using the VAR system in the opening rounds was a “measure of prudence”.
“Those countries that use VAR did not rush into it from the start. It’s a technology that a lot of people don’t completely use yet,” he told reporters before the tournament.

CONMEBOL to nack Messi apkako
Argentina talisman Lionel Messi could face a two-year ban from international matches governed by CONMEBOL due to his corruption comments on the South American footballing body.
The Barcelona forward said, as quoted by The Mirror: “There is no doubt, the whole thing is set up for Brazil. I hope the VAR and referees don’t play any part in the final and that Peru can compete but it looks tough to me. I did not want to be part of this corruption, we shouldn’t have to be part of this disrespect we suffered during the Copa America. We could have gone further but we weren’t allowed into the final. Corruption, referees and all the rest stopped people from enjoying the football”.
