Lai Mohammed seeks to deny his legacy

Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has urged the senators to disregard the (uncomplimentary) names they call him on social media. The politician made the appeal as he appeared before the Senate for screening as a ministerial nominee on Tuesday.

Mohammed had appeared for screening at 12:49pm. The Kwara native had said, “My name as it appears on my CV is correct — Lai Mohammed.”  He then went on to make the appeal, “Please, don’t believe what they call me on social media. They call me all sorts of names.

“I used to ignore it until my seven-year-old grandson asked me, ‘Why do they call you Liar Mohammed?’ I told him, ‘Don’t mind them. They are the bad guys.’”

Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, was on Saturday thrown into panic as masked soldiers reportedly arrested, flogged and shaved off the hair of young men wearing dreadlocks and those with bushy and tinted hair. It was gathered that the soldiers also took the young men to an unknown destination.

Some residents, who witnessed the incident, said they were afraid that another season of Operation Python Dance might have commenced in the state, adding that the inhuman treatment meted out to the young men and innocent youths was uncalled for.

An eyewitness said the soldiers visited major streets in the city dehumanising young men and taking them to an unknown destination without any explanation. “The masked soldiers flogged many of their victims and used scissors to cut off the hair and then threw the victims into their vehicles and zoomed off. It was a very sorry sight. We were all afraid to get close.”

It’s frightening the complete disregard for human rights in this country. As a young person, there’s always one mad person waiting to pour sand into your garri whenever you step out into the streets. Life here is a trauma fest.

 

An encounter of ordinaries

There was panic and anxiety among doctors in the employ of Borno State Government following the late-night visit of Gov. Babagana Zulum to hospitals within Maiduguri metropolis. Gov. Zulum at about 1:00am paid an unscheduled visit to Umaru Shehu Ultra-Modern Hospital as well as the State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri where he found no doctor on duty.

Many of them, especially those on duty call who couldn’t respond to the governor’s anonymous distress calls, are particularly bothered over the fate that awaits them.

“The governor called all the 10 doctors on call at the hospital here but none of them answered him. I think they thought that it was an ordinary patient on emergency disturbing them,” a source at the hospital informed.

A 30-year-old Indian woman was arrested for allegedly killing her one-and-half-month-old son and throwing the body into a canal, police said on Monday. The incident happened in neighbouring Kaira district and the body of the child was found on May 23, an official said.

A probe at several hospitals in the vicinity as well as birth registers of civic bodies in the region led the police to the accused Asha Rathod who had given birth at Nadiad civil hospital, said the official.

Kathlal police station official DK Raol said Asha Rathod was married in 2009 and had two children, but was fighting a court case with her husband and was staying separately since 2015. “She has told us that the infant was born out of a relationship she had with another man. To avoid censure from society and kin, she claims to have throttled the child and dumped his body in the canal,” DK Raol said.

Case closed: Neymar dodges Amadioha’s thunder

Police investigating rape allegations against Brazilian football player Neymar say they have closed the case.

The São Paulo attorney general’s office said the case was suspended due to a lack of evidence, but will be sent to prosecutors for a final decision.

The investigation was opened after Brazilian model Najila Trindade alleged the footballer attacked her in a hotel in Paris, France, in May. Neymar has denied the accusations, saying he is being extorted. A spokesman for Neymar told AFP that he was not able to comment on the police decision.
