Not too old to…graduate
A 77-year-old female retired worker was among the 1,008 students of the Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, who were awarded a first degree on Tuesday at the institution’s 2017/2018 Convocation Ceremonies.The convocation was the university’s 50th. The retiree, Mrs. Bridget Okonji of the Department of Educational Foundations (Guidance Counselling), told journalists that the achievement was her dream come true.
She added that she went for the degree programme because she did not want to sit at home after retirement. “You know when you retire like that, you will not want to stay at home and be dying slowly, she said. According to the retiree, no one should feel too old to go to school as learning remains a life-long adventure. “Education has no limit. It is from cradle to death in order for one to add value to the society,” she said. True words. But boys will still read this and say owo ni koko. SMH.
Obasanjo: Of bad eggs and hypocrites
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has asked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to purge itself of “bad eggs and hypocrites”, who, according to him, lacked commitment to return the political group to its lost glory. He said this when he received the party leaders from South West, led by the National Vice Chairman in the zone, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Alleging that many of the PDP chieftains were after ‘their pockets and stomachs’, he wondered why some top echelon had left the party while others lost hope shortly after the announcement of the 2019 presidential results.
“Politically speaking, you can’t be my friend if you don’t buy into the Nigeria project. For me, till death, I will continue to push for a better Nigeria. I said if you compare the two of them (referring to Atiku and Buhari), with what I know and all I have written about the incumbent which they have decided to cover up, Atiku is far better than the incumbent.”

Okorocha Vs Oshiomhole: No permanent friends in politics
Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State yesterday held a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja. Okorocha, fielding questions from journalists after the meeting, blamed the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, for the loss of key states to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general elections in the country.
“I don’t have any problem with the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party. I only have problem with the chairman who took it upon himself to do the wrong thing against me for just no cause and to fight a battle that he can never win,” he said.
Meanwhile, Oshiomhole while reacting in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Simon Ebegbulem, said: “This shows that Okorocha is still suffering from his own Iberiberism after he lost woefully in his effort to force his son in-law on Imo people…Okorocha should hide his head in shame.” Ouch! Me sef feel the pain on Okorocha’s behalf. It’s not a good thing to be him right now.
Military parenting
A mum and stepdad have admitted child cruelty charges after subjecting a nine-year-old boy to a four-hour military-style boot camp routine to discipline him. The boy was dragged out of bed at 9pm and forced to do nine-minute sets of press ups, sit ups, star jumps and other gruelling exerciser. If he failed, they reset the clock and made him do it again before eventually allowing the child to go to bed shortly after 1am, a court was told. The ordeal took place in the St Austell area of Cornwall, in January last year.
Prosecuting counsel, Adrian Chaplin said: “A teaching assistant described how, at 8.30am as the children were arriving, that she was greeting them and the boy asked to speak to her. She thought he looked sad and he started to describe having been punished and made to do exercises in the evening.” The message was then passed to a teacher and in turn the police and social services.
My judgment: Mum and stepdad should go through what they subjected the child to, three times over.
How to not write an exam
Two 14-year-old schoolboys have been arrested over claims they repeatedly crashed their school’s WiFi network to get out of taking exams. The youngsters, who have not been named because of their age, were reported to police last Thursday over claims they’d disrupted the internet connection at Seacaucus High School in New Jersey.
Much of the school’s curriculum is internet based, with the boy’s alleged activity meaning all 600 students were left with no work to do. The boys are said to have taken requests from friends to crash the WiFi at certain specific times. Schools Superintendent Jennifer Montesano said, “The system has been restored and is now fully operational.”
LOL. Don’t even get me started on that internet-based matter. In my time, the only way you could escape a test or exam was if you died on that day and resurrected two days after. And I’m sure your parents will still order you to take the test (or exam), and ask you whether those who did had two heads.
