‘No fear, we won’t bite unless we have to’

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said that its decision to probe Senate President Bukola Saraki’s tenure as Kwara State governor was in the public interest. The agency asked Saraki not to fret over the investigation into his earnings as Kwara State governor and his stewardship in the Senate, “so long as he has no skeletons in his cupboard.”

Replying to Saraki’s allegations that the ongoing probe was a witchhunt, the acting EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade, in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, said Saraki was not above the law, noting that the commission was obligated by law to enthrone probity and accountability in the governance space, a duty it claimed to have pursued without ill-will or malice against anyone.

“It is in the interest of the public, and for Saraki’s personal good, that he is not only above board, but be seen at all times to be so,” he said. “Against the background of the possession of indicting petitions and other evidence available to the EFCC, even Saraki will agree with the commission that putting him through a legitimate forensic inquiry is the legitimate route to establish his integrity as a public servant.”

LOL. Why EFCC no put GanDollar through a legitimate forensic inquiry? Naija, my country. We sabi wetin dey happen.

Ohanaeze  wants ‘boys’ to collect

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (OYC) has tasked the leader of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to reconcile with Mujahid Dokubo-Asari or forget about the May 30 sit-at-home order to commemorate Biafra. President of OYC, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, stated in Abakaliki that the council would tell the people to boycott the order, if IPOB did not carry the Southsouth agitators along.

“IPOB should make peace with Dokubo-Asari urgently, as the bond between the Southeast and Southsouth was being threatened. Since after the war, the old Eastern Region had been enjoying harmonious relationship with [Southsouth],” Isiguzoro said. “So we advocate that IPOB should extend hand of friendship to Dokubo-Asari, as we will not allow any misunderstanding between Kanu and Dokubo-Asari to escalate. IPOB should use the May 30 event to mend fences with former Niger Delta agitators rather than sit at home,” OYC stated.

The group, in another breath, urged the federal government to extend the N100 billion gesture to the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and IPOB, as what’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

LOL. I’m even surprised Mazi Kanu is yet to speak about the N100 billion drama. Perhaps the bros dey one side dey do some calculations. By the way, shebi Ohaneze said they are not in support of the sit-at-home? Why dem change mouth now? Mtcheew.

Rochas Vs INEC: No respite in sight for Owelle

The outgoing Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has lamented that he had been afflicted with more evils in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) than he would have suffered if he had been a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He accused the National Chairman of the APC, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, and other unnamed leaders of the party of working with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to kill his senatorial ambition. The embattled governor however said he would remain in the ruling party despite alleged moves to frustrate him out of the APC.

He said, “The evil I feared in the PDP has befallen me 10 times in the APC. Last week, I wrote a letter to INEC for the first time informing them of their wrongdoings and illegal actions to withhold my certificate on mere allegation of duress which was never founded, neither was there any committee set up to investigate the matter,” he said. “What is important here is that INEC does not have the power to withhold the certificate of return, having declared the result.”

Chai. INEC don too stress Oga Rochas o. The man no dey even reason about governing Imo again sef. Aunty Commisioner of Happiness don fall hand seriously.

Jega comes for Nigerian politicians

A former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Attahiru Jega, has blamed the problems of the country on “bad and unenlightened” leadership.

Jega stated this at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State, where he chaired the 13th convocation lecture of the institution on Wednesday.

He said, “The biggest challenge facing the country is bad and unenlightened people pervading the country’s political space. Politics in Nigeria is predicated on buying electoral officers. This has made our politicians not to responsive when they get to their destinations…Our leaders may be educated but not enlightened.”

True talk. And also, if officials in government parastatals were enlightened, them for no jus cancel election barely hours to the day.

Sexual abuse: New Papal directives

Pope Francis has made it mandatory for Roman Catholic clergy to report cases of clerical sexual abuse and cover-ups to the Church. In an Apostolic letter, which is set to become Church law, he makes clear that any sexual advance involving the use of power will now be considered abusive.

The clarification is being seen as a message to the Church hierarchy that noone will be exempt from scrutiny.

“The crimes of sexual abuse offend Our Lord, cause physical, psychological and spiritual damage to the victims and harm the community of the faithful,” the Pope writes in the letter.

I’m glad these stories of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church is fully coming into light. No one should be exempted from punishment for inflicting harm on another. Can I get an amen?
