It was a like a war torn area at Agboju Market in Festac Town, Lagos, when the government moved in with two bulldozers and demolished the over 40-year-old market in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State. During Sunday Telegraph’s visits to the scene, traders were seen running helter scelter in search of safe places to keep their wares and preserve their kiosks which escaped the bulldozers’ jaws while few others were selling off their wares.

The stalls made of metal containers and kiosks made of both wood and metals were among the demolished stalls. While some of the traders were well composed evacuating their wares, others were confused as they had no place to keep their wares and thus left them unattended. Read more

Firm boosts broadband penetration with free Wi-Fi (Guardian)

The broadband penetration target of the Federal Government, especially among youths segments of the country, received a boost, as the innovative Red Cheetah free Wi-Fi App, launched by Swift Networks crossed the 100, 000 downloads mark.

This is excluding the users of the web and Windows version of the platform. In addition, the app usage has hit an all-time high of 50, 000 sessions per day.

The app, which provides up to one Gigabyte of free Wi-Fi Internet access per day per user, is available at its dedicated 500 hotspots across Lagos State. Read more

Hamzat charges staff to be best in their duties (Guardian)

The new Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has declared his aspiration to become the best Deputy governor in Nigeria.

He has accordingly demanded that staff of the Deputy Governor’s Office and indeed other civil servants be the best in what they do.

Osun poly students vandalise medical centre over colleague’s death (Punch)

Some students of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, on Saturday, protested against the death of their colleague, vandalsing the institution’s medical centre, an ambulance, furniture and other items in the facility.

Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has approved the appointment of Uche Onyeaguocha, a lawyer, as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

In a statement issued yesterday, by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Chibuike Obyeukwu, former Imo State SSG, Chief Chris Okewulonu was named the Chief of Staff. Others are Chima Nwana, a lawyer, as Deputy Chief of Staff, and Chinemerem Madu, as Chief of Protocol. Read more

Ex-Arsenal and Real Madrid star Jose Antonio Reyes has been killed in a traffic accident, his former club Sevilla FC tweeted on Saturday.

“Our beloved squad member Jose Antonio Reyes died in a traffic accident,” the club said.

Reyes made a name for himself playing for Sevilla, where he began his career as a young player in their football academy. Reyes made his professional debut for the club in 2000, at the age of 16.

The Spaniard would eventually move to a string of top-flight clubs around Europe, including Arsenal, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Read more

Okocha in Scotland court over money laundering (Punch)

Former Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha has appeared in court in Aberdeen facing money laundering charges, Aberdeen Evening Express reports.

Okocha, who is better known as Jay-Jay, appeared in private at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Friday.

The 45-year-old, who describes himself on his social media profile as “The Football Magician”, made 124 appearances in the Premier League, scoring 14 goals for Bolton Wanderers between 2002 and 2006. Read more
