Traditional head decries land grabbing, urges LASG to check activities

Mr Peter Ogungbesan, traditional head (Baale)of Ora Community in Eredo Local Council Development area, Epe Division, has decried the influx of land grabbers into the community.

Ogungbesan said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Epe, on Monday.

He said that land grabbing was becoming alarming, therefore, urged the state government to curb their activities to maintain peace in the community.

“Land grabbers invaded my community- Ora Community in Eredo LCDA sometimes ago, but with the help of government security agencies and the people, they vacated our lands.

“Recently, another set of land grabbers resurfaced but were unsuccessful in ravaging our community land.

“This ungodly act can cause community unrest, if caution is not applied.

“I urge the government to look into the land grabbing matter and provide lasting solution,” he said.

Ogungbesan said that he was aware of government law on land grabbers and the punishment it attracts, but that the perpetrators were still engaging in such illegal activity.

The Lagos State Government has reviewed the State Properties Protection Law (LSPPL), 2016, to expunge option of fines to any convicted land grabber(s) with mandatory six years jail term to serve as deterrence to others.

The traditional ruler commended the effort of the Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration toward eradicating land grabbers’ activities in the state.

He, however, said that the government needed to do more in checking such illegal activities.

The community leader called on the neighbouring communities- Odogbawujo, Odoshiwola, Mojoda to combine efforts in combatting the menace.

He also called on the leadership of Eredo LCDA to wade into the matter for peace to reign. (NAN).
