Training in managing time, stress (Nation)

Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode yesterday urged civil servants to maximise their time and avoid being stressed. He enjoined them to live good lives and cope with a number of factors overlooked in the quest for organisational efficiency. The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions, Dr. Akintola Benson Oke, spoke while opening a two-day training with the theme: ‘Techniques for effective time and stress management for civil servants in Lagos State’. He said the workshop would enlighten participants about effective time and stress management. Read more

LASG partners WHO to eradicate measles (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has partnered the World Health Organisation to give free vaccination to children between nine months and five years across the healthcare centres in the state. The Medical Director, Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, Dr. Adebajo Madewa, said the partnership would further increase the fight against the infection across the country with the adoption of international best medical practices. Madewa, who spoke at the opening of the seven-day immunisation programme at the hospital, noted that the government was determined to totally rid the state of measles by 2020, a statement said on Tuesday. Govt rescues beggars, homeless children from Lagos streets (Punch)

The Lagos State Government’s ‘Operation Clear Lagos,’ an initiative inaugurated to address the menace of street begging and other challenges in the metropolis, said on Tuesday that it had rescued 51 persons consisting of children, mentally-challenged persons and the destitute. A statement by the Head, Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Olabisi Adeola, said Operation Clear Lagos, which was created by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, and made up of officials from the ministry, started its work on Friday in the 57 councils of the state. It was celebration galore in Ogudu, a Lagos community, comprising Adebola street, Asejere, Alhaja Eleshin and other adjoining streets following Governor Akinwumi Ambode’s timely response to the Save Our Soul (S.O.S) message sent to him by the community on the incessant flooding in the area that had been wrecking havoc on residents for some time now, as well as the traffic jam that has defied solution for a long time. Charities celebrate Women’s Day with pupils (Nation)

In commemoration of the International Women’s Day, some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO), including Women’s Right and Health Program (WRHAP), has held a programme for secondary school pupils to express themselves through art and culture. About 10 schools participated in the event which was themed “Expression” and held at Excel College, Ejigbo, Lagos. Pupils exhibited various art works and talents ranging from dance, music, drama, painting, poetry and spoken words. Participating schools included Effortswill College; Power and Glory College; Oluwole Christ tThe King College, among others. Oluwole Christ the King won the first position in the Spoken Word category while Efforts will and Power and Glory came second and third. Read more

Ambode trains workers on conflict resolution (Nation)

The ability by workers to persuade, negotiate, resolve conflicts and avoid chaos is crucial to the development and peace of Lagos State, Govenor Akinwunmi Ambode has said. He spoke during a workers training held in Lagos, tagged: “Building Values and Sound Human Relations Skills in Lagos State Civil Service”. Represented by the Commissioner, Lagos State Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Akintola Benson, he said the workers are expected to be able to identify and spot potentials for conflicts before they fester into full blown crisis. He pointed out that the world is fast changing and issues are becoming more complex, adding that the state need workers who are able to make critical observations. Read more

Apapa Customs Command generates N24.8bn in February―Official (Tribune)

The Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), says it generated N24.80 billion in February up from N24.76 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2017. The Public Relations Officer of the command, Mrs Nkiru Nwalla, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday. She said the command generated N55.81 billion between January and February 2018 up from N50.72 billion generated in the corresponding period of 2017. “The command had an increase of N5.09 billion from what it generated between January and February 2018 compared to the two months under review in 2017,” Nwalla said. Lagos sensitises residents on 25,000 jobs for graduates (NewTelegraph)

Lagos State Government yesterday began a sensitisation programme for 25, 000 graduates’ employment training programme, Ready. Set. Work, just as Governor Akinwunmi Ambode reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensure that graduates in Lagos higher institution were employable. Speaking at the commencement of the sensitization programme for the final-year students at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ambode said that his administration had decided to upscale the scheme to accommodate 25, 000 students, higher than 12, 000 trained in 2017. Dangote, Samsung, others offer automatic employment to LSETF graduate trainees (Guardian)

Dangote Group, Samsung, Crown Nature Plc and other organisations has offered automatic employment to no fewer than 150 graduate trainees of the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) skills acquisition scheme. The scheme, under the Lagos State Employability Support Project (LSESP), is organised in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and managed by Arc Skills Nigeria, a capacity building and training outfit. A total of 540 students who participated in the first batch of the programme were awarded certificates by the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB) and the Australian Vocational Training and Employment Group (AVTEG). Yoruba Elders demand Restructuring ahead of 2019 Elections (ThisDay)

With the next general election gathering momentum, a cross section of Yoruba leaders under the umbrella of Afenifere, has restated their stand on the restructuring of Nigeria before 2019. According to them, restructuring and true federalism of the country would preserve the nation’s unity and engender rapid development of components parts that make up Nigeria. One of the Dapchi girls freed from Boko Haram captivity says five girls died “due to congestion”  in a vehicle after they were abducted. Fatsima Abdullahi, a 15-year-old SS1 student, is number 73 on the list of abducted Dapchi girls published by the federal information ministry. In a phone conversation with a man named as Modu Geidam, for whom Fatsuma’s father does security work, she said the girls were kept in an “underground place where even aircraft” couldn’t spot them. Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s media assistant, Mr. Reno Omokri, on Tuesday asked the General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, to call Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo to order for accusing Jonathan of sharing N150 billion two weeks to the 2015 elections. Omokri made the call in a statement he issued yesterday, debunking a claim by the vice president that while it spent a paltry N14 billion on agriculture in 2014, N15 billion on transportation, and only N153 billion on infrastructure in three years, it shared N150 billion two weeks to the 2015 elections. Police arrest most wanted ‘criminal’ (Nation)

An alleged most wanted criminal, Usman Fashola, 31, alias Awolowo, has been arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police’ (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT). Fashola, said to have formed a gang while in prison custody, was said to have been responsible for robberies in Lagos and neighbouring states. He was paraded yesterday alongside two others, Opeyemi Oni, 28 and Oyeniyi Olaotan 26, by Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal. Edgal said the gang specialised in robbing motorists and passengers of their belongings, adding that they also engaged in house-to-house robbery. Read more

Police bust Underage prostitution haven in Lagos (DailyTimes)

A four man gang responsible for running an underage prostitution ring in the Iyan-Ipaja area of Lagos have been smashed by men of the Lagos State Police Command. The suspects, Thomas Emmanuel and Okon John, Monica Ita and Bright Effiong operated a hotel known as Collabor Hotel located at No. 3 Ige Street, Iyana-Ipaja. It was gathered that the suspects specialized in recruiting young teenage girls from villages, bring them to the said hotel where they worked as commercial sex workers. Read more

Usman targets ABU title at GOtv Boxing Night (Punch)

Russia condemns British decision to skip Salisbury spy poisoning briefing (Skynews)

Moscow has condemned Britain’s decision to skip a Russian foreign ministry briefing on the Salisbury poisoning. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was “another vivid example of the absurd situation when questions are asked and an unwillingness to hear even any answers is demonstrated”. A British embassy spokesman said earlier that ambassador Laurie Bristow would not attend, but that it was considering sending someone else. Read more

Pope Francis announces 6-day visit to Ireland in the summer (Belfasttelegraph)

The 81-year-old Pontiff will arrive in Dublin on Saturday August 25 and will take part in the Festival of Families, a faith-based cultural concert, in Croke Park. He will also celebrate Mass in the Pheonix Park on Sunday August 26. Further details of the papal schedule are to be released at a later date and it is not known whether Pope Francis will travel across the border into Northern Ireland. Confirmation of the visit comes after months of speculation. The announcement has been welcomed by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference. Read more
