A transport worker, Ibrahim Yahaya, has allegedly stabbed his colleague, Kabiru Abdullahi, to death during an argument at the Kanuri Motor Park, in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Yahaya and Kabiru were at the park when an argument ensued between them.

The argument was said to have degenerated into a fight and in the process, Kabiru brought out a knife and allegedly stabbed Yahaya’s head.

Following the attack, Yahaya left the scene and quickly sought treatment for himself on Wednesday, February 15, 2023. Read more 

Denying Obi presidency if he wins will spell doom for Nigeria, says Ohanaeze (Guardian)

A faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to succumb to antics of some members of the political class, who are allegedly plotting to subvert the choice of Nigerians during Saturday’s polls.

The group warned that on no account should anybody deny the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, his right if elected, noting that attempts to subvert the will of Nigerians would spell doom for the country.

The Secretary General of the this faction of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, who said this in a statement, yesterday, appealed to Northerners to join hands with other regions in voting Obi. He noted that Obi’s presidency would end corruption, executive stealing and insecurity ravaging the nation. Read more 

Sanusi: Naira redesign will hurt politicians more than ordinary Nigerians (DailyTrust)

The 14th Emir of Kano and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, has asked Nigerians to support the cashless policy.

In a social media post on Monday, Sanusi urged people to be careful and not fall for the manipulation of politicians.

He added that the policy was not new, saying it has been in the pipeline for over ten years.

Criticising politicians, Sanusi said the policy has made their loot useless and worthless. Read more 

SAN sues lawmaker over unpaid legal fees (Guardian)

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Aikhunegbe Malik, has sued his client, Hon. Francis Agbo, over unpaid N15 million professional fees.  He is praying the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja to order Agbo to pay him the sum. 

Agbo currently represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo constituency of Benue State at the House of Representatives and is seeking re-election for a second term. 

Malik said he represented his client in an appeal numbered CA/MK/PE/03/2022 between Agbo vs Aida Nath Ogwuche and two others. Read more 

Bode George, Jandor unite ahead of polls (Punch)

A former Peoples Democratic Party’s Deputy National Chairman, Olabode George, and the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State, Dr Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, on Monday, united ahead of the general elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that there has been a cold war between George, the PDP leader in the state, and Adediran over some unresolved issues between the duo shortly after the PDP primary.

In a statement by Mr Gbenga Ogunleye, the Head, Media and Communications, JANDOR4GOVERNOR Campaign Organisation, George and the candidate met on Monday to resolve differences ahead of Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections. Read more 

Lagos community gets borehole (Nation)

As part of activities to commemorate this year’s World Day of Social Justice, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Advocacy for Social Justice and Ethical Values (ASJEV) Initiative, yesterday inaugurated two free boreholes in Ebute Meta, Lagos.

With the theme: “Overcoming Barriers and Unleashing Opportunities for Social Justice”, the World Day of Social Justice seeks every year to uphold and recognise the need to promote the principles of social justice. 

The projects at Brickfield Road and Moss Street were donated by ASJEV and facilitated by the councillor of Ward D, Lagos Mainland Local Government, Frank Ayodele. Read more 

Tinubu’s campaign protest Naja’atu’s appointment as PSC coordinator (Leadership)

All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council has kicked against the appointment of its former director, Naja’atu Muhammad, as the coordinator of the Police Service Commission (PSC) for North West.

Naja’atu, a former director of the Civil Society Directorate of the APC presidential campaign council, had criticised the APC standard bearer, Bola Tinubu, after resigning her appointment at the campaign council. She was immediately seen with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The PSC announced Naja’atu as one of the coordinators to supervise the conduct of police officers during the February 25 and March 11 general election. But the APC campaign council protested the appointment, saying the job requires someone without bias to handle and not Naja’atu. Read more 

Lassa Fever kills 85 Nigerians in 6 weeks (DailyTrust)

Lassa fever killed 85 persons within the first six weeks of this year, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC),  has said.

In a situation report released on Monday, the agency said in total,  531 suspected cases had been recorded this year.

It said 20 states had so far recorded at least one confirmed case of Lassa fever across 79 local government areas. Read more

NMDPRA to sanction marketers for delayed reporting of fire outbreaks (ThisDay)

The Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has directed retail stations to report fire incidents in their premises within 24 hours of such occurrence or face sanctions.

The organisation said it will impose sanctions on erring operators ranging from fines to suspension of operation and revocation of licenses.

A statement from the NMDPRA said the Director, Health, Safety Environment and Community (HSEC) department of the authority, Nsikak Bassey,  handed down the directive during a meeting with the safety team of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) Retails. Read more

Thompson, who played Lorraine Baines-McFly in the film trilogy, took to social media on Saturday to share photos with her former co-stars. “Wow honestly had the best time today with my #bttf family,” she wrote in the post’s caption. “So many fun fan moments too.” Read more

Alec Baldwin firearm enhancement in manslaughter charge downgraded (BBC)

Prosecutors in New Mexico have dropped firearm enhancement charges against Alec Baldwin following the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust.

The move reduces possible prison time for the actor as the charges carry a mandatory five-year prison sentence.

Mr Baldwin, who faces two involuntary manslaughter charges, still faces up to 18 months in prison.

Rust’s director Joel Souza was also shot and wounded. Read more

There are no bad days in Macklemore’s house.

The rapper shared a video on Instagram on Monday where he’s seen enlisting his 7-year-old daughter Sloane to help direct the music video for his new song “No Bad Days.”

“I’m a little bit nervous asking this, if I’m being honest,” Macklemore said to Sloane, who is seen sitting next to her dad in front of a piece of paper full of doodles at a table. Read more

Alligator found in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park (Guardian)

In an unusual scene for this part of the country, a 4ft-long alligator was rescued from the famed Prospect Park Lake in Brooklyn on Sunday.

The itinerant crocodilian – most likely an unwanted pet – was in poor condition and described as sluggish by park officials, the local news station PIX11 reported. Authorities said the lethargic alligator might have been shocked by the cold.

“Parks are not suitable homes for animals not indigenous to those parks – domesticated or otherwise,” the spokesperson said. “In addition to the potential danger to park-goers this could have caused, releasing non-indigenous animals or unwanted pets can lead to the elimination of native species and unhealthy water quality.” Read more

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government on Tuesday for the first time advanced a plan to overhaul the country’s legal system, defying a mass uproar among Israelis and calls for restraint from the United States.

The vote marked only preliminary approval for the plan. But it raised the stakes in a political battle that drew tens of thousands of protesters into the streets, sparked criticism from influential sectors of society and widened the rifts in an already polarized country.

The 63-47 vote after midnight gave initial approval to a plan that would give Netanyahu’s coalition more power over who becomes a judge. It is part of a broader package of changes that seeks to weaken the country’s Supreme Court and transfer more power to the ruling coalition. Read more

The LIV Golf League announced its final four team rosters Monday, and Phil Mickelson’s HyFlyers GC is undergoing a makeover with the circuit set to begin its second season this week.

Mickelson’s squad has two new members joining holdover  Cameron Tringale: three-time PGA Tour winner Brendan Steele and James Piot, who won the 2021 U.S. Amateur and jumped to LIV Golf after leaving Michigan State last year. 

Steele and Piot replaced Bernd Wiesberger and Matthew Wolff on Mickelson’s team. Wiesberger joined Martin Kaymer’s Cleeks GC and Wolff is part of Brooks Koepka’s Smash GC this year. Read more 

Patrick Beverley confirms report he’s close to signing with the Chicago Bulls (DailyMail)

Veteran point guard Patrick Beverley has given the seal of approval to a report that he’s set to sign with the Chicago Bulls.

The free agent is on the verge of returning to his native Chicago for the remainder of the season, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Monday night.

Beverley was dealt to the Orlando Magic as part of a four-team trade that saw Mo Bamba head to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange. But Orlando waived him, placing him into free agency. Read more
