Truck driver arraigned for crushing woman’s legs

A 40-year-old woman, Blessing Emokahare, has been admitted to the Orthopaedic Hospital Igbobi, Lagos State, after her legs were crushed by a truck in the Mushin area of the state.

The truck driver, Kabiru Arasi, was arraigned on two counts before Magistrate K.A. Abdusalam of the Ogba Magistrate’s Court.

The charges read in part, “Kabiru Arasi, of No. 3, Adeowo Street, Ijora Badia, Lagos, on May 21, 2022, around 11.46am, at the Total Filling Station, Isolo Road, inward Mushin Bus-Stop, Agege Motor Road, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, being the driver in charge of a Mack truck belonging to a company in Lagos, drove same on the public road without regard to other road users in a careless and inconsiderate manner. You then knocked down one Blessing Emokahare, 40, and caused fracture and varying degrees of injury on her two legs, as she is presently responding to medical treatment at the Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Somolu, Lagos, with the total cost of the medical bill valued at N1,795,164.00.”

The police prosecutor, R. Ogundeji, said the offence was punishable under Schedule 174, Section 50 of the Road Traffic Law and Regulation of Lagos State of Nigerian 2018.”

Counsel for the defendant, Bidemi Sanni, said the driver reported himself to the police, adding that he also rushed the victim to a hospital and paid N700,000 out of her bills.

Sanni, while applying for the bail of the defendant in liberal terms, also informed the court that the two parties were trying to settle.

The magistrate granted Arasi bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The matter was adjourned till July 19, 2022. (Punch)
