OAU ‘sex for mark professor’ remanded in prison custody (Nation)
A Federal High Court, sitting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Monday ordered that a “sex for mark” sacked senior lecturer of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, Professor Richard Akindele, to be remanded in prison custody. The presiding judge, Justice Maurine Onyetenu, ordered that Akindele be remanded in prison at Ilesa for demanding sex from her postgraduate student, Monica Osagie, before she could pass his course. The embattled Professor of Management and Accounting was arraigned in court on a four count charge by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offenses Commission (ICPC). Read more

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Sunday said that in the course of executing the Warri-Itakpe rail line project, stations were built in the villages of Peoples Democratic Party’s chieftains. Pro-hijab protesters have stormed the University of Ibadan International School, sequel to which the school’s authority hurriedly shut down the premises indefinitely. The Concerned Christians Forum on Monday advised the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to maintain a neutral position as the 2019 general elections campaigns kick off. The National Coordinator of the group, Elder James Amedu, also urged CAN to refrain from making political statements. The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), on Monday, called on the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola to revoke contracts of non performing power supply stakeholders. Israel’s government appears to have survived a possible collapse after a key partner withdrew a threat to leave the coalition and force snap elections. Naftali Bennett, of the Jewish Home party, had signalled he would quit, but announced on Monday he would stay on. PM Benjamin Netanyahu has held talks with ministers in recent days to try to keep his coalition together. Stolen Picasso found in forest a ‘hoax’ (BBC)
What was thought to be a stolen artwork by Pablo Picasso recently discovered in Romania has been revealed as a forgery. Experts had hoped that the painting was Harlequin Head, snatched from the Kunsthal museum in Rotterdam in an infamous art heist six years ago. A Belgian theatre company duped a Dutch writer, who wrote a novel based on the daring robbery, into thinking she had found the missing artwork in Romania. It says it staged the hoax as part of a project about the value of truth. Read more

Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa bemused by two disallowed goals in Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against South Africa in Johannesburg, has called on the Confederation of Africa Football to examine the goals. South Africa came from behind to hold Nigeria to 1-1 draw, a result which earned the Super Eagles the right to return to the AFCON tournament after missing the 2015 and 2017 editions. Rugby star held over sexual assault claim (BBC)
Australian rugby league player Jarryd Hayne is being questioned by New South Wales Police over an allegation of sexual assault. The 30-year-old is in custody over the alleged incident with a woman in Hunter Valley, north of Sydney, on 30 September. New South Wales Police confirmed that a 30-year-old man had been arrested. The investigation is being led by detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad. Read more

A New Jersey woman and her fiance were killed while driving to their wedding in Berks County, Pennsylvania, U.S., according to reports. Bride Kathryn M. Schurtz, daughter of former Fanwood Councilwoman Karen Schurtz, and Kathryn’s fiance Joseph D. Kearney, died in a crash on Wednesday while driving to their wedding in Pittsburgh, according to the Facebook page for the municipal government of Fanwood, Union County. Read more
Artisan charged with stealing recharge cards of all networks (Independent)
A 22-year-old artisan, Opeyemi Shomuyiwa, on Monday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, over alleged theft of a hand bag containing two phones and N85,000 recharge cards of various networks. Shomuyiwa, a resident of Shogbamu Street, Bariga, Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty. Police Prosecutor Lucky Ihiehie told the court that the accused stole a woman’s handbag containing the recharge cards, a Samsung phone valued at N 27,000 and an LG phone worth N45, 000. Read more
