At least two persons have lost their lives and many injured in a fire resulting from an explosion involving four vehicles at the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday.

It was learnt that the accident involved two petrol tankers, a gas truck, and a cement transport truck.

The PUNCH gathered that the accident occurred in the earlier hours of Sunday.

While giving an update on the incident, Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide, said rescue operations have so far found two dead bodies. Read more

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says a fresh explosion from the scene of Sunday morning inferno, involving four vehicles on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, has delayed the opening of out-bound Lagos lane for motorists.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that rescue operations that began in the early morning were still ongoing at the scene of the accident involving three tankers and a truck on Kara Bridge when another explosion occurred.

Providing an update, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide, FRSC Sector Commander in Lagos State, told NAN that the fresh fire affected the rescue operations. Read more

Fresh fears as residents jettison face masks (Vanguard)

Non-compliance to the guidelines to contain raging coronavirus has shown a huge increase in infection rates across Nigeria and Lagos in particular. Between Monday and Thursday (four days), Nigeria recorded a total of 2,395 cases. Out of this number, Lagos contributed 33 per cent with a total of 793 cases. Sadly, despite the heavy toll of the infection, many Lagos residents have continued to flout the guidelines. Experts quoting unconfirmed statistics say 90 per cent of Lagosians do not wear a face mask.

Among the guidelines issued from the start of the containment of coronavirus was the wearing of face mask which falls under respiratory hygiene.

But like other guidelines, the use of a face mask has continuously been flouted by many Nigerians. Read more 

Gridlock: Oshodi-Isolo LCDA deploys officials to control traffic on inner roads (Guardian)

The Oshodi-Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) on Saturday deployed members of the traffic committee to control traffic on major inner roads in Oshodi.

The Media Officer of the council, Mr Babajide Dada, gave the hint in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, this is as part of measures to solve the perennial problem of gridlock on inner roads in Oshodi. Read more

COVID-19: Commercial sex workers not on essential duties, FCTA warns (Vanguard)

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has warned commercial sex workers operating in the territory to respect all the COVID-19 protocols especially the 10 pm to 4 am curfew, noting that they are not on the exemption list of workers on essential duties.

The Administration also warned operators of nightclubs, bars, and gardens across the city not to open for business until the COVID-19 restriction order is lifted.

Chairman of the FCT Ministerial Enforcement Taskforce team on COVID-19 Restrictions, Ikharo Attah handed down the warning at the weekend when the team went round Kubwa, Gwarinpa, and Wuse to monitor the level of compliance by operators. Read more

Man kills biological children, injures father (Nation)

A 34-year-old man Ifeanyi Apusiobi on Sunday, allegedly killed two of his children in Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The suspect reportedly attacked his victims, Chinecherem and Obinna said to be his biological children while they were fast asleep around 1am.

The Nation gathered the suspect also injured his 72-year old father, Dominic on the head with the same object.

Police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect has been arrested.

He however said the circumstances surrounding the dastardly act was yet to be ascertained. Read more

Nigerian doctors call off strike over lack of PPE (AlJazeera)

Nigerian doctors in state-run hospitals have called off a week-long strike over welfare and inadequate protective equipment as new coronavirus cases spike in the country.

The strike by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), which represents some 40 percent of Nigeria’s doctors, began last Monday but had exempted medics treating coronavirus patients.

The group’s directors decided to suspend the strike action from Monday, June 22, by 08:00am local time (07:00 GMT), the association said in a statement. Read more

Flood renders Benin residents homeless (Nation)

Many residents of Benin have been rendered homeless following several hours of heavy down pour on Saturday.

A correspondent who went round to monitor the situation in the Edo capital, reports that several houses were submerged by the flood and others destroyed.

While only a few part of the city was spared by the flood, the areas worst hit included most parts of the GRA, 1st East Circular, Akenwan road, Sakponba road, Erediauwa, off Sapele road, Okhoro as well as Ugbowo areas of the city. Read more

A 25-year-old Libyan man, Khairi Saadallah, was named as the suspect in a stabbing spree that left three people dead in the UK, local media reported. The crime is being investigated as a terrorist attack.

Saadallah is reportedly being questioned by the police. According to the media, security forces are checking whether he has any mental health issues.

They also cite the man’s neighbors, who said that they believe he had been recently released from prison. It was earlier reported that the suspect is a Libyan asylum seeker. Read more

Kurt Cobain’s MTV Unplugged guitar sells for $6m at auction (BBC)

A guitar played by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain in a rare acoustic concert has sold for a record $6m (£4.9m).

Cobain played the retro acoustic-electric 1959 Martin D-18E during a legendary MTV Unplugged performance in 1993, just five months before he died.

At $6.01m after fees, the guitar is the most expensive ever sold at auction, Julien’s Auctions said.

Bidding in Los Angeles opened at $1m and was won by Rode Microphones founder Peter Freedman. Read more
