UNHRC supports Semenya in fight to compete in international athletics (PA)

The UNHRC has pledged its support to Caster Semenya as she fights for her right to compete under the women’s category in international athletics.

28-year-old South African athlete, World and Olympic 800m champion, Caster Semenya, has challenged the International Association of Athletics Federation’s (IAAF) proposed rule to have her, and other hyper androgenic female athletes have their testosterone levels lowered.

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has announced their support to Semenya and are backing a resolution tabled by South Africa to support Semenya in the fight for her rights.

“The resolution, adopted in the 46th session by consensus and without a vote is aimed at eliminating discrimination against women and girls in sport, giving significant global weight from a human rights perspective to Caster Semenya’s case,” Dirco spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mabaya said on Thursday evening, 21 March 2019.
