The Senate on Thursday resolved to invite the National Security Adviser (NSA), Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to a meeting to discuss how to mitigate the scary security situation in the country.

The Red Chamber resolution was sequel to the adoption of a motion on the “Urgent need for the Improvement of the coordination and synergy between Nigerian Security Forces and Agencies to help strengthen and win the fight against Insecurity in the nation.”

Anambra CP warns against jungle justice (Punch)

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Aderemi Adeoye, has cautioned residents against taking laws into their own hands by engaging in jungle justice.

Adeoye said the command would no longer condone situations when people engage in jungle justice by lynching suspects to death without trial.

The Police Public Relations Office, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement, quoted the police commissioner on Friday as saying that perpetrators would be charged with murder.

He described any mob lynching of crime suspects as bestial and worse than their victims.

The PPRO said two suspects have been arrested for involvement in a recent mob lynching that resulted in the death of suspected criminals. Read more

Tinubu to depart for Berlin Saturday for G20 CwA Conference (Nation)

President Bola Tinubu will leave Abuja for Berlin, Germany, where he will take part in the G20 Compact with Africa (CwA) Conference on Monday, November 20.

A statement issued by the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said the CwA Conference is being hosted by German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz.

According to the statement, President Tinubu will, during the conference, join other Heads of State and Governments of CwA member countries, bilateral partners, as well as Heads of International Organizations, to deliberate on the immediate enhancement of economic and business cooperation, with a view to outlining concrete measures to boost investments in critical areas such as energy, trade, infrastructure, and new technologies, among others. Nigeria: A pro-Palestinian demonstration leaves one dead (AfricaNews)

Clashes between police and a pro-Iranian Nigerian Shiite group protesting against Israel’s incursion into Gaza left one person dead and several injured on Thursday in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, AFP learnt from both sides.

Hundreds of members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) took to the streets of the city on Thursday, carrying Palestinian flags and mannequins representing dead children, in a show of solidarity with the Palestinian people and denouncing Israel in the war that has pitted it against Hamas since 7 October.

Footage seen by AFP showed armed police throwing tear gas and firing into the air to disperse the demonstrators, who retaliated by throwing stones at the police. Read more

INEC issues Uzodinma Certificate of Return (Guardian)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued Governor Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with his certificate of return in Owerri, the state capital.

During the state election on November 11, Uzodimma garnered 540,308 votes, defeating his closest rivals, Samuel Anyanwu of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who secured 71,503 votes, and Nneji Achonu of the Labour Party (LP), who obtained 64,081 votes. read more

Court remands Emefiele in Kuje Correctional Centre (Punch)

The High Court sitting in the Federal Capital Territory has ordered that the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, be remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of his bail request.

Emefiele is standing trial on an alleged procurement fraud.

The trial which had been stalled on three occasions finally held on Friday.

The Federal Government had initially preferred 20 charges of procurement fraud to the tune of N6.5 billion against the former CBN governor.

But the FG reduced the charges to six to the tune of over N1bn which he was arraigned on Friday. Read more

Appeal Court validates Bala Mohammed’s election as Bauchi governor (Guardian)

Appeal Court sitting in Abuja has on Friday affirmed the election of Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State against his challenger, Abubakar Sadique of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

While delivering the lead judgement, Justice Chidiebere Nwaoma Uwa on Friday in Abuja, ruled that Abubakar and the APC failed to prove the allegations of malpractices and non-compliance with the Electoral Act, 2022 against Mohammed and the PDP.

Mohammed had won at the Tribunal while the former Chief of Air Staff, Abubakar approached the Appellate Court.

While reacting to the judgement, the Deputy Governor of the State, Auwal Jatau, hailed the decision of the Court.Read more

Antonia Byatt, “Possession” author, dies aged 87 (RTE)

The British author Antonia Byatt has died at the age of 87, her publisher has said.

The writer, known as AS Byatt, who won the 1990 Booker Prize for her romance novel Possession, died on Thursday “peacefully at home surrounded by close family”.

“A Disturbance in the Force,” a comical behind-the-scenes documentary about the ill-fated 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special, will arrive from a galaxy far, far away in December.

After its premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, “A Disturbance in the Force” will be released on digital and Blu-Ray on December 5. This announcement comes on Life Day, a canonically Wookie holiday in the Star Wars universe.

The movie will also play in select theaters across the U.S., U.K. and Australia ahead of its home entertainment launch. September Club produced “A Disturbance in the Force” with Giant Pictures handling digital and Blu-ray distribution. Adam F. Goldberg served as executive producer. Read more 

UN stops delivery of food and supplies to Gaza as communications blackout hinders aid coordination (ABC)

The United Nations was forced to stop deliveries of food and other necessities to Gaza on Friday and warned of the growing possibility of widespread starvation after internet and telephone services collapsed in the besieged enclave because of a lack of fuel.

Israeli officials said the country’s War Cabinet approved for the first time allowing small, daily shipments of fuel into Gaza. Two container trucks a day of fuel would be let in for the U.N. to use in supporting water and sewage infrastructure, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity pending an official announcement.

Israel has barred entry to fuel since the start of the war, saying it would be diverted by Hamas for military means. It has also barred food, water and other supplies except for a trickle of aid from Egypt that aid workers say falls far short of what’s needed. Read more

European nations join Myanmar genocide case (AlJazeera)

Five European countries and Canada have teamed up to join the genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that accuses Myanmar of committing genocide against the Rohingya community.

Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Britain filed a joint declaration of intervention with the case, lodged by The Gambia in 2019, the United Nations’ highest court said late on Thursday.

The group cited “common interest in the accomplishment of the high purposes” of the 1948 convention on the prevention and punishment of genocide.

“We want to make a contribution to clarifying and combating genocide. We are particularly focused on violence against women and children,” Tania von Uslar, Director-General for Germany’s Legal Affairs said in a post on X. Read more

Erling Haaland will travel with the Norway squad to Scotland ahead of their final Euro 2024 qualifier on Sunday, handing Manchester City some much-needed positive injury news.

City have already seen four players withdraw from international duty this week, to add to their three players already out with injury. Haaland went down in Norway’s friendly win over the Faroe Islands on Thursday holding his ankle, before completing the game.

Everton deducted 10 points after breaching Premier League financial rules (Vanguard)

Everton have been docked 10 points after breaching Premier League financial rules, the English top flight announced on Friday.

The league referred Everton to an independent commission in March for an alleged breach of its profitability and sustainability rules (PSRs).

Clubs are allowed to lose a maximum £105 million ($130 million) over a three-year period or face sanctions.

The punishment, the biggest sporting sanction in the competition’s history, leaves Everton 19th in the table.

The Premier League said in a statement: “The club admitted it was in breach of the PSRs for the period ending season 2021/22 but the extent of the breach remained in dispute. Read more
