Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, Monday, said Visionscape Sanitation Solution, introduced by the state government, was a ghost as far as the state House of Assembly was concerned. Obasa spoke while responding to questions raised by one of the stakeholders at the 3rd edition of Lagos State House of Assembly media and civil society organizations parley. According to him, “there are heaps of refuse all over the state and we are worried by this on a daily basis. Visionscape is a ghost and we are not bound to embrace it. We will say no where it is necessary and where we are to say yes, we will say so in multiple.” He lamented that the way heaps of refuse are scattered all over the streets and major roads across the city, could lead to outbreak of epidemic among residents. Herdsmen attack: Ambode, Buratai vows to ensure improved security (Vanguard)

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State and Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Yusuf Buratai, have assured that more resources would be committed towards ensuring that herdsmen attacks, kidnapping, armed banditry, robbery and other forms of criminalities, were nipped in bud completely within the axis. They gave the assurance yesterday at the commissioning of Nigerian Army Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Igbo-oye, Epe, Lagos State, saying, this facility is one of the strategy employed to tackle different forms of criminalities including possible herdsmen-farmers clash, kidnapping, gun running and armed robbery. Democracy Day: Ashafa urges citizen participation (Punch)

The Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Gbenga Ashafa, has asked Nigerians to participate in the democratic process by contributing opinions and ideas. Ashafa said as the 2019 elections drew closer,  Nigerians must eschew violence and peacefully exercise their franchise at the polls. The lawmaker made the statements in his Democracy Day message on Monday.  He said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had in the last three years laid a foundation of “socio-economic growth and development” in the country. The lawmaker added that there had also been prudence and attitudinal change in public service, infrastructural development and a stiff fight against corruption. Read more

Lagos Assembly passed 9 Bills, 45 Resolutions in 1 Year – Obasa (Independent)

Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, on Monday said the House passed nine bills and 45 resolutions in the last one year to ensure good governance in the state. Obasa, who was speaking at the third edition of the Media and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Parley at the Assembly complex in Lagos, said the bills and resolutions covered such crucial areas as education, health and environment, among others. He stressed the role of the legislature in promoting culture and tourism in the state, as well as the preservation of statues and monuments, adding that the House was also involved in the sensitisation of the public on plans to include the study of culture in the school curriculum. ‘Embrace religious tolerance’ (Punch)

The Yoruba Tennis Club has advised residents of Lagos State to embrace religious tolerance to ensure peace in the state. Speaking at the club’s 4th edition of the annual Ramadan Lecture, the Chairman of the Club, Prof. Adetokunboh Fabamwo, urged Nigerians to follow the club’s brotherhood system, which embraced both Muslims and Christians. He decried the rate at which some Muslim and Christian undergraduates in Nigerian universities behave towards one another, as they often sit apart. He said, “There should be religious tolerance which will allow other people to practise whichever religion practise they wanted.” Read more

Lagos decries increasing spate of Domestic Violence, Killings (ThisDay)

The Lagos State Government has expressed concerned over the spate of increasing domestic violence in the state, vowing to prosecute Mrs. Udeme Otike Idibie, for allegedly murdering her lawyer husband, Symphorosa recently at their residence at Diamond Estate, Ajah.The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, disclosed this yesterday, while briefing the newsmen at Ministry of Justice, Alausa, Ikeja. Kazeem said the issue of domestic violence calls for concern because in most cases it results to fatal death of spouse. While revealing that the office of the Director of Public Prosecution has established a prima facie case against the suspect, Odibi, the attorney general disclosed she would soon be charged to court for prosecution on murder. The Guardian to hold oil & gas award June 23 (Guardian)

The Guardian has disclosed plans to organise an Oil & Gas Roundtable and Awards on June 23, 2018.The event would hold at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos from 5:00p.m. The theme of the roundtable is: “Driving Sustainable Gas to Power Initiatives in Nigeria: Challenges and Opportunities.” It would feature a keynote presentation and panel discussion, with emphasis on the prospects and challenges of falling gas supply and policy. Yes, I saw the possibility in my final year first semester and I worked towards it tremendously. Was it only in the first semester of your final year? Didn’t you plan it from the first day you were admitted to the university?

I had always been very hardworking and getting good grades since my first year in the university.  I started with a 4.86 GPA in my first year. But, then, the possibility was very slight because there were many talented scholars who started excellently well, too. Read more

Baby boy sold for N.25m in Lagos (Independent)

Two suspects had been arrested in Lagos on the allegation that they belonged to a syndicate of child trafficking and have sold a newborn baby boy for N250,000. Edgal Imohimi, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, who paraded the suspects along with other suspected criminals in Lagos on Monday said that on April 23, 2018, information was received that Regina Ibeto, a 50-year-old woman who reside at No. 96, Bunmi Ajakaye Street, Ajangbadi, allegedly induced pregnant women, and when they eventually give birth, she sold the newborn babies. “On the strength of the information, the Divisional Police Officer, Ajangbadi Division, led operatives to the compound where the said Regina was found administering intravenous injection (drip) to one Uju Nnamdi of No. 22, Imude Road who claimed to be sick and five months pregnant. Salesman steals N3.3m drinks from employer (Punch)
A salesman, Abraham Oluwafemi, has been arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing drinks valued at N3.3m belonging to his employer, Grace Network Nigeria Limited. The accused was alleged to have sold 45 cartons of drinks and diverted the proceeds into a private account. He was arraigned on two counts of stealing and conversion of goods. The charges read, “That you, Abraham Oluwafemi, on May 11, 2018, at about 3.30pm, on Apogbon Issa Williams Street, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal 45 different stocks of drinks valued at N3,343,390, property of His Grace Network Nigeria Limited. Police arrest 4 men using sick people as beggars in Lagos (Vanguard)

Police in Lagos have arrested four men who allegedly specialised in using an unregistered NGO to defraud people under the guise of soliciting funds for the sick. The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, CP Edgal Imohimi, said the suspects pretended to be gathering money from the public for the treatment of sick people but eventually diverted the funds realised. “On May 27, about 8p.m, an NGO based in Lagos informed the police about the illegal activities of an unregistered NGO that operates as a body that helps people with debilitating illnesses to raise funds for their treatment. Police rescue commercial sex worker from client in Lagos hotel (PremiumTimes)

The police in Lagos on Monday said that they rescued a commercial sex worker from a client in a hotel room, following an attempted murder. The state Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, said that the police prompt response to a distress call from a worker at Wellwood Hotel, Ajangbadi, Lagos led to the rescue of victim and arrest of the suspect. Mr Imohimi said: “On the May 24 at about 12:35 a.m, a distress call was received from Wellwood Hotel. “The duty officer that night at Ilemba Hausa Division, quickly went to the hotel where he found one Faith, a commercial sex worker, with severe injuries on her neck. “The victim claimed that on the same date at about 12.15 a.m., the suspect came to her hotel room. After sleeping with her, he brought out a rope, tied it around her neck and pulled her down. Read more

Policemen torture designer as N35,000 disappears (Punch)

An interior designer, Dapo Oguntimehin, has lamented the alleged harassment and torture meted out to him by some policemen attached to the Amukoko Police Division, Lagos State. Oguntimehin said he was returning home from work around 10.30pm on Friday when he was cornered at a bus stop by the policemen, who dragged him into their operational vehicle. The victim claimed that he was locked up in a cell after getting “serous beating,” adding that he was released after N3,500 was paid for his bail. The 33-year-old told Punch Metro that he was shocked when the policemen could not produce a bag he brought to the station, which he claimed contained Automated Teller Machine cards, business cards, cardigan and N35,000. 12 oil thieves jailed in Lagos (Nation)

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Monday sentenced 12 men to six years imprisonment each for dealing in 600,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) without lawful authority. The convicts were arraigned on four- count charge of conspiracy, dealing in diesel without lawful authority and forgery by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in October 2015. Those convicted were – Christopher Okorie, John Mbah, Tammy Bami, Osi Prince, Chukwuji Festus, Kabiru Adeyemo, Ayannubi Moses, Sopuruchukwu Chukwudi, Obinna Ebu, Abdullahi Oyelade, Charles Ubey and Achia Vincent. Thirteen-year-old Naomi Oke was cynosure of all eyes at the final day of Lagos State Government-sponsored Open Swimming Championship for Secondary Schools which took place at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos on Sunday. The SSS 1 student of Avital College, Aguda, Surulere, Lagos, claimed nine gold medals in the three-day event facilitated by the Lagos State Sports Commission and organised by the Lagos State Swimming Association. Oke, said her ambition was to do Lagos proud in national championships and represent Nigeria in the Olympic Games someday. Teams light up Lagos for MRS Kids’ Cup final (Nation)

The stage is now set for the 2018 MRS Kids’ Cup at the Campos Mini Stadium in Lagos Island as the finalists emerged after completion of the semifinal matches in both boys and girls categories at the weekend. Right Football Academy secured a 3-2 victory over Zamadek Football Academy of Lagos Island in the first semi-final in the boys’ category, while River Football Academy of Yaba piped Latoyam Football Academy by a lone goal.
