Voter intimidation, media bias and influence of government resources reported by EU observers (Independent)

EU observers have identifed a string of problems in the Zimbabwe election that passed off peacefully on Monday.

The ruling Zanu-PF party won a majority of seats in parliament, according to the country’s electoral commission, in the first election in the country since Robert Mugabe was ousted from power in November 2017.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s party appeared set for a sizeable majority after picking up 109 seats against 41 for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), with 58 seats yet to be declared. Two seats went to smaller parties. But European Union observers said a level playing field was not achieved due to voter intimidation, media bias and misuse of state resources.
