Gunmen kidnap 2 Chinese nationals in Ogun (Channels)

Gunmen have abducted two Chinese nationals around Kemta, along Onigbedu in Ewekoro local government of Ogun State. 

The spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident on Monday in Abeokuta.

Odutola, however, said that effort is being put in place by the command to ensure the release of the victims. She also stated that the kidnappers had contacted their company to demand a ransom for their release. Read more

Police confirm killing of lecturer, deputy registrar, others in Taraba attack (DailyTrust)

The police in Taraba State said a lecturer at the Federal University Wukari and deputy registrar of Taraba State School of Health Technology, Takum were among the passengers killed by gunmen along Takum-Wukari road early Monday morning.

The acting Police Public Relations Officer, Taraba police command, DSP Kwache Gambo, confirmed the killed to our correspondent in a telephone interview.

Daily Trust had earlier reported that six passengers and a driver were killed at a boundary area between Taraba and Benue states along Takum-Wukari road. Read more

New pastor replaces Iluyomade at RCCG City of David (Punch)

Pastor Kayode Pitan has been appointed as the new pastor of the City of David Parish, Lagos of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

He will succeed Pastor Charles Kpandei, who has been serving as the interim pastor since the suspension of Pastor Idowu Iluyomade.

Barely a year after his passing, the Akinkunmi family has announced the burial rites for their patriarch, Pa Michael Akinkunmi Taiwo (OFR), the designer of Nigeria’s national flag, Pa Akinkunmi, who died on August 29, 2023.

In a statement released by his son, Akinwumi Akinkunmi, the family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to all those who supported them during their time of mourning.

“We thank the Federal Government for sending the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Hon Idris Mohammed, to pay condolence to the family when the incident happened,” the family said. Read more 

Kwara bans scavengers’ operation in Ilorin metropolis (Tribune)

The Kwara state government said on Monday that operations by scavengers have been prohibited in the Ilorin metropolis, the state capital, as part of new strategies to eradicate indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the state.

Speaking during the inauguration of an Environmental Taskforce charged with the responsibility of ensuring compliance with the new environmental strategies and guidelines in Ilorin, the state commissioner for environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, advised all previously registered scavengers to do their business at the government refuse dump site at Sokoto-Aiyekale off the Express Way.

The commissioner said that over 300 environmental task force officers have been mobilised to keep 24-hour environmental surveillance and enforcement in five units at over 70 earmarked locations in the metropolis. Read more

Tanzania clamps down on opposition rally, arrests leaders (AlJazeera)

Police in Tanzania have detained opposition leaders and rounded up several hundred supporters as they halted a planned rally.

Leaders of the opposition Chadema party, including former presidential candidate Tundu Lissu, were arrested on Monday in the southwestern city of Mbeya, a party official announced on X. The police had previously banned the rally, claiming that violence was planned.

The Tanzanian police action comes amid a wave of protests that has swept other parts of sub-Saharan Africa in recent weeks, including nearby Kenya and Uganda. Read more 

Margaret Menegoz, Amour, The White Ribbon producer, dies at 83 (THR)

Margaret Menegoz, the head of French production company Les Films du Losange, who produced the movies of Michael Hanke, Wim Wenders and Éric Rohmer, among others, has died. She was 83.

The company issued a statement confirming that Menegoz died in Montpellier on August 7. They cited her “love of films and work, and her loyalty to her filmmakers that have become the hallmarks of Les Films du Losange,” describing Menegoz as “open-minded towards Europe and the international scene, which she particularly cherished.”

Menegoz led Les Films du Losange for close to 50 years, taking over at the company in 1973. She produced more than 60 films, including Haneke’s Amour, The White Ribbon and Cache, Wenders’ 1977 feature The American Friend, Volker Schlöndorff’s Swann in Love (1984), Agnieszka Holland’s Europa Europa (1990), Rohmer’s A Tale of Springtime (1990) and A Tale of Winter (1992), among many others. Kenya aviation workers to strike over deal with Indian company (AfricaNews)

Kenya’s Workers Aviation Union (KAWU) said that it will go on strike from next Monday over plans to lease Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to a private operator.

The industrial action would likely cause significant disruption to national carrier, Kenya Airways, and operations at the airport which is a key African travel hub.

KAWU, which represents airport workers, said the proposed deal announced last month with India’s Adani Airport Holdings would result in job losses. Read more

Banksy has confirmed he is behind a new swimming fish artwork which has appeared on a police sentry box in the City of London.

It marks the seventh animal-themed piece the elusive street artist has claimed this week by posting a photo of the artworks to his Instagram at 1pm.

Chelsea announce signing of Pedro Neto from Wolves (Independent)

Chelsea have completed a £54m deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Pedro Neto the club announced on Sunday.

Vinícius Júnior is the latest target for the Saudi Pro League, a source has told ESPN, and the Real Madrid player is considering a proposal to move to the Gulf country.

Police arrest man climbing Eiffel Tower, prompting evacuation hours before closing ceremony (ABC)

French police evacuated the area around the Eiffel Tower after a man was seen climbing the Paris landmark hours before the Olympics closing ceremony Sunday.

The shirtless man was seen scaling the 330-meter (1,083-foot) tall tower in the afternoon. It’s unclear where he began his ascent, but he was spotted just above the Olympic rings adorning the second section of the monument, just above the first viewing deck.

Police escorted visitors away from the area around 3 p.m. Some visitors who were briefly locked on the second floor were allowed to exit around 30 minutes later. Read more
